  • DM Wine Dinner (Canary Club, New York, NY): Pale garnet color. A little shy on the nose with medium intensity. Developing with rose petals, red cherries, leather, licorice, spices. On the palate, medium+ acidity, medium tannin, high alcohol, medium intensity, medium body, medium+ finish. Can drink now, but suitable for further aging. Very elegant Barolo. Benefited tremendously from a slow ox.

  • Very fragrant nose, strawberry, menthol, pine nuts, I think of Piedmont but without certainty.

Ethereal on the palate, liquid lace, it's supple and pure, feminine style but while remaining frank with notes of menthol, sweet spices, strawberry and blood orange. Great balance while freshness, obvious wine while being deliciously complex. Large powdery finish, both suave and soft, with great length.

Grand Barolo, to include in a Burgundy tasting! I had thought of Barbaresco.

  • Brief impression from a glass shared at lunch. The '09 Monvigliero is really impressive for the vintage. The nose here was a bit riper and simpler than the '16 I tasted a day later, but the core of the wine is similar, with wild red strawberry fruit and candied red floral tones. I'm sure if you compared any other producer's 2009 and 2016 wines, the gap would be much wider.

The aromatics of this wine were wide open, and it was similarly expressive on the palate, with impressive balance, tannin quality, and acidity for an '09. Unlike other '09s, I don't think you need to rush to drink it, but I also don't see any reason to wait.

  • Heater week; 3/26/2023-4/3/2023 (Chicago, IL): This isn't as delicate as some of the other lighter vintages of this wine, and the ripeness shows quite prominently in the context of other bottles of Monvigliero. The olive/stemmy quality is in the backseat, though you can still pick out some of it. Not quite as resolved as I would like, but this is still drinking very nicely now. The vintage character shows, which to be clear is no bad thing.

  • Decanted three hours before dinner. Riedel burgundy glass. Very pale, most fragrant with soft earthy and red-fruited aromas. Airy and quite approachable, tannins being quite right for food. Excellent showing, more interesting and pleasing than the 2009 Duroché Charmes-Chambertin opened for comparison.

  • Double decanted two hours. Entering a drinking window. Lovely fruit great nose, excellent balance. Worked well with dinner, worked almost better alone as it has a lovely nose of fruit and tar, a great palate of more dark fruit and savory notes, and is long and especially clean on the finish. Might improve, but very good now.

  • (see note below re. 2 days later). Upon opening: The cork popped out as if there was some pressure build up in the bottle, so perhaps this bottle was tainted in some way. The wine never opened up, even after 3 hours, and was never that juicy or complex. Kind of flat. Flawed? Anyone have experience with pressure build up inside the bottle or know what that is from? (note: 2 days later with a small amt. of air in vacuum, the wine tasted like a normal, substantially-built Barolo. So, I guess it just needs more air and more time? Upped score from 85-91).

  • Lighter color, brighter crimson with onion skin rim; almost reduced nose, candied, kirsch, exotic nose, almost olive, savory, mushroom, violets, elegant, seemed to be at an in-between stage where the fruit was still really sweet but the whole cluster and savory meaty edge is growing on the palate; completely unique and unlike almost all other Baroli which is why I called this Burlotto Monvigliero, vintage...2009.

  • Festa del Piemonte: Gala Dinner (The Pool in NYC): Again from a 3L at Festa - perhaps a favorite to show. There were a lot of really amazing wines at this dinner and yet this one stands out despite its youth. I found myself preserving the glass and finishing others or pouring out others so it had the time to open and show it's stuff. It's beautiful. All of the elegance of the monvigliero and Fabio's style. Slightly sweet. Red fruits. Lots of spice. Just wonderful. By the end of the night I thought the best way to describe his wines is 'enchanting' and I'm sticking with that descriptor here.

  • Tasted blind. Very pure fruit driven nose with lots of strawberries. Quite tannic on the palate with tart red berries and a slightly astringent quality. Good, lingering finish. Aside from the tannins, I thought this was surprisingly open and easy to drink. Great wine.

  • Another late 2000s Burlotto, another bizarre nose. The same elderberry/St. Germain thing, that's just so strange. The body is fine, but what I want from Burlotto is the Chambolle in Barolo feeling, not this. Maybe it's me at this point. So strange.

  • Delaware BeachHouse Weekend (Rehoboth Beach): WOTN, everyone loved it, although I personally gave a slight edge to the Ducru and CdP. Classic Barolo characteristics of rose petal, tar, and cherry on the nose and layered palate. Looks and tastes lithe but packs a flavorful and long punch.

  • Weekend wine dinner with a friend. This never came together for me. It wasn't bad, but never presented as an integrated, flavorful, aromatic whole. Finished the last third of the bottle the next day, after storing it in the fridge. It had scale and weight, but little charm. So my experience was similar to Cadomer, and different from Heaton, Howden, and Dionysos No. 2. My last two bottles will sleep for many years more, now, based on this tasting.

  • Beautiful color and clarity. The wine showed a little reduced and reticent all night, never fully showing what it was all about. Spiced orange peel infused red fruit character, but never showing the high-toned fruit and florals that I was expecting.

  • Very good showing. Elegant, and endearing by way of its sense of place and grape, both uniquely showcased in this medium-bodied wine. A little truffle, plenty of soil, white/red floral, and a cherry and raspberry medley. Flows across the palate thanks to plenty of fresh acidity. This has good structure to continue on a nice level for some years yet. An understated persistence, and nuances that tug at the mind kept this interesting, and highly enjoyable. highly recommended

  • Very similar to last bottle but this showing a little richer, and a bit more roasted red fruit character.

  • Opened six hours before dinner. Tasted (Zalto Burgundy glass) and then cooled a bit. Much more mature than I had imagined. Fabulous nose (both as warm and cool) of dust, spices, medicine with some dark fruits in the background. Very expressive. Very forthcoming in the mouth, like an old-fashioned Burgyndy with good tannins. Really good and lingering aftertaste. Excellent now.

  • Beautiful rich nose of roses, dark cherries, raspberries and earthy notes, paired to a medium rich palate loaded with fruit, crunchy minerality. Good length and long biting finish. The palate is wonderfully balanced, light and lithe, enough acid to complement food (beef fajitas tonight) but really would go with anything. A stunner, not showing the reported weaknesses of the vintage.

  • La Festa del Barolo Gala Dinner (The Pool in NYC): Poured from a double mag. I am a terrible blind taster and yet there is something about this wine that makes me wonder if I could pick it out if we did blind. The nose on it is so unique and just jumps out the glass at you and there's this herbal/truffle/red fruit combination that seems happen in all of the vintages and is just so enticing. It is lovely and elegant and somehow at the same time the phrase 'salt of the earth' comes to me. This was a warmer vintage at the time (similar to vintages today), but when the time to pick happened it cooled down significantly and Fabio noted that helped the wine keep some of that elegance. Just lovely.

  • Auzone Burlotto vertical #7:

Refreshing nose with the patended strawberries from the Monvigliero vineyard. Minerals, some smoky notes, juicy, anise.

Juicy mouthfeel, the warm vintage is present but well handled, early maturity notes, wish there was a tad more tannins and acidity.

Smiliar to the 2011 vintage but not as good. 94p

  • This, while a corked bottle showed the elegance underneath, looking forward to remaining bottles, fingers crossed as this was going to be a very enjoyable lighter styled with good tension barolo.

  • A pretty wine, with great balance. Flowers, berries on a developing nose. Excellent palate with more berries and some zip. clean on the finish. Entering a drinking window, not clear that this has the stuff to go really long term.

  • Beautiful Monvigliero. Incredibly perfumed from the start. Lovely wild and gamey red berry fruit, like the most perfectly ripe wild strawberry. Has that signature olive tapenade nose with a nice rose, floral component. Agree that this won't be the longest lasting Monvigliero and a step behind the 2010-13 vintages, but this is still a wonderful wine that I am very pleased to have more of.

  • Long birthday lunch at Noble Rot (Noble Rot, Wellington, NZ): A pale colour, after the Burgundies. A developed, Burgundy-like bouquet of dark spices, underbrush, dry clay, red currants, red cherries and other mainly red fruit. On palate, a lighter, riper Barolo style that made me immediately think of 2009. Traditional in character, showing little or no oak influence. Olive tapenade, raspberries, cinnamon and other spices, dried herbs, soil and dry tobacco leaves. I'm a huge fan of this Cru but I'd put the 2009 a little behind all of the 2010-2013 vintages of Burlotto Monvigliero. Obviously, years ahead of this Monvigliero, but I doubt that this vintage will make really old bones. Still, a nice, savoury, non-interventionist Barolo.

  • The 2009 Burlotto Monvigliero is a lovely wine, bursting from the glass with a pure, fragrant and expressive nose of wild strawberry jam, griotte cherry, rose petal and deeper balsamic tones that hint at the greater complexity to come. On the palate the wine is sappy and elegant, with a very refined and inconspicuous backbone of tannin and acidity. Monvigliero's elegance and the precocity of the vintage mean that this wine is very charming and accessible right now (with a long double-decant in any case), but I would love to revisit this when it has clocked up twenty years in the cellar.

  • Drank with family with delicious steaks. Soapy nose(where was the olive?) with odd palate lacking fruit. Very different from my other bottles of this. Hopefully just one off bottle. Others seemed to like it more than I did.

  • An exceptional offer.
Pretty reticent at this point, but it opens slowly over hours. Seems like a bottle of endlessly evolving deliciousness.
Begins as being very upfront and perfumed. Slowly the mid palate gives in with tight delineated plum and red cherries as well as the floral notes and perfume gets more accessible and less agessive. Balsamic notes as well as liqourice appear later.
Never loses its grip and stays firm and feminine. Silky, light and crisp mouthfeel.
    Save a few years

  • Decanted one hour and apparently insufficiently aerated. Lovely mineral notes of strawberry and raspberry and something that I understand people call olives; everchangeing but not quite focused. Still rather closed in terms of structure; I guess there must be much more tannin underneath than it showed here. Overall a fine drink, though.

On the second day, much more focused, a beautiful drink with an Arla unika series cheese with complex organic flavours.

  • Relatively light bodied. Cherry and blackberry, minty herbs, vanilla, violets. Still fairly tannic, as expected, with very focused acidity. This needs 8-10 more years, at which time it should be a very elegant, feminine, pretty Barolo. 91+

  • Ripping good Barolo. Opens with bright fresh fruits not like a Shiraz but lighter and fresher more like the fruit section of a market than a jar of jam. In the mouth it's elegance for days with gentle spices and a wonderful floral undertone. This is not a big wine but it drinks like a dream. I wish I had more.

  • Decanted about 45 minutes. Opens with sweet, almost jammy red fruit and the trademark stemmy cinnamon and twig and olive. Much darker and tarry in the mouth, a big wine, with dense tarry black fruit and lots of structure, but it lacks the elegance of the 2008 that I loved so much. Better with food than without. Shows the vintage character clearly. With more air it starts to blackier and tarrier and almost sour and bitter and I like it less. I was a bit disappointed by this wine and I'd rather backfill 2008 or wait for 2010.

  • Tasted with Accilivi 2008 from the same winery. This was a very fruity one which showed ordinary Barolo character in hot vintage 2009. Red fruit aroma opened up quickly. Full of jammy strawberry, hawthorn, red currant. Good acidity. Delicious and straight forward. Easy to serve and approachable. Not a classic Barolo taste but beginners may like its fruitiness a lot.

  • The warning signs about Barolo and 2009 have been clear and many. Still, those who usually handle difficult vintages well are the traditionalists with a track record, right? But sorry, Burlotto does not handle the Monvigliero 2009 too well. Nose isn't bad, it's close to classic Burlotto with strawberries, rosehip, black tea and a feeling of gravel. But the taste is not in the same league - fruit feels cooked, at first there are hardly any tannins at all, but when they do show up they're hard and edgy. Acidity is not good enough and it feels like drinking a blend of Beaujolais, overripe Grenache from Southern France with a splash of Sagrantino. I love Burlotto, but this is not up to par.

  • Day 1: Explosive nose of herbs, forest floor, dried strawberries and bitter tangerine rinds with a bit of fresh whipped cream. Palate had the surreal Burlotto Monvigliero silkyness, even moreso than the 2008 vintage. I am generally not a fan of the 2009 Barolos but Verduno is so far north that this wine manages great balance and elegance.

Day 2: Much of the same from day 1, but add prominent sweet strawberry concentrate to the nose. The body picks up a bit more midpalate depth which was lacking on day 1 and I hope this continues to put on some weight in the cellar. Still too young today.

Overall: Classic, beautifully pure and totally compelling. As if someone took the apline herbiness and red fruit core of Gattinara and somehow blended it with a bit of the cool sweet ripeness of Barolo/La Morra. I keep drawing parallel's between Burlotto's Monvigliero and LdH Tondonia. I love it's charm!

  • The color was a beautiful translucent ruby. On the nose I found heady aromas of ripe red berries and roses with crushed Kalamata olive, rosemary, and savory roasted meats. On the palate it was tightly wound and feminine, showing densely packed dusty cherry fruit, herbal tones and minerals, before it's fine tannins coated the senses. The finish was long, yet dry with red berry-concentrate saturating the senses. With time, this will gain weight and volume on the palate, making it a truly complete experience. For now, it needs time to fill out.

  • Cool: c15 degrees. Surprisingly pale and translucent in light of the vintage. That pale but heavy (and not totally attractive) strawberry jam of my at-home bottle of the '08. A much deeper and more pungent aromatic though. Sweet spice, red licorice, engine oil and red leather. Shimmering, bright and very red. Mouthpopping: huge and round from tannic and alc structure. Acidity washes the material from the mouth like a retreating wave: quickly thinning the material, but then a fine layer lingers on the beach, now showing red fruit, the concentrated essence of red flowers, blood and oxtail! The extract and the tannin then grip the lower palate. Did double-d for 3 hrs, but that didn't change it! With steak, so was drinkable, but it's fairly componential at the moment. The very concentrated strawberry-jam fruit will need to calm down a fair bit; but the concentration suggests that fruit will always be with this wine. Should be pretty amazing drunk lengthily-decanted in c3 years. Will surely have 20 years after that! 90-91 pts of pleasure now; 90. I've ?never tasted a wine with this wild (bizarre) combination of brightness, cleanliness, red-fruited concentration, scale, fine-and-significant acidity and full-skeleton tannic structure. Could (and I think it will) hit 96+ heights in a decade!

  • Wine Education Service - Piemonte (Imperial College): Light, translucent, significant age.
Fruity nose (strawberries), light and attractive.
Strawberries in the attack, very soft tannins, soft mid palate, good length.

On the palate it was tightly wound, showing densely packed red fruit and herbal notes before it's fine tannins coated the senses.
