Seventeenth Annual White Truffle Dinner (Hughes House - Chicago IL): In 83/94/95 vertical. Luxurious and unctuous with a hint of sweetness when tasted on its own, but fully savory when enjoyed with food. The most powerful of the vertical, even if the only one not perfectly harmonious. Some possible further upside?

Great end to the evening. Followed the 09 Keller as a nice foil to big, dense German Riesling. The Trimbach was very French - lovely color, floral and very dry.

Spring Swing Through France-Random Wines Tasted or Imbibed; 4/14/2018-4/25/2018 (Burgundy, Alsace, Paris): Deep yellow. Utterly complex aromas even for Clos Ste. Hune-peach, honeysuckle and black tea. Not much petrol. Medium weight, but as I said 5 years ago, the glycerine sap gives the misleading sense of sweetness. Fantastically fresh fruit, outstanding acidity and soil, and great cling for a long finish. This wine is now glorious and in full bloom, at least from this perfect Alsatian cellar. I underestimated it early, but it has developed magnificently. It also didn't hurt to be be drinking it on a beautiful terrace on a freakishly warm spring day.

Wow, where can I get more of this. My first Clos St. Hune and based on this as well as the 2001, hopefully will not be my last. Honey and citrus nose with hints of overripe tropical fruit. Razor sharp acidity balanced by the dry citrus, minerals and chalk palate. Long length. Very nice indeed.

Pale yellow. Honeyed, almost tropical, nose only hinted at Riesling at first but later elements of lemon and mineral and petrol emerged. Over the night, this morphed into longer and leaner Clos St Hune even with the atypical aromas. Who cares if it was iconic or not--it was delicious.

Some Bottles from a Week in France; 4/14/2013-4/21/2013 (Paris, Northern Burgundy, Alsace): Medium yellow. Petrol and yellow peach. Not as dense as this wine in other years, but lots of glycerine which gives the illusion of sweetness. Fear not-it is classically dry with rising lemony acidity and great, late crushed rock. Kept improving and was just as fresh the next day. Perhaps a tad behind the '95, which recently made me swoon, but not by much. More and more impressive as it went.
Two days later from the dregs of the bottle, still vibrant, crystallizd lemon, light , taut and dry without any trace of oxidation. Just incredible staying power due to its great structure.

Medium yellow. This started out with dried yellow peach aromatics, but it became more lemony over time. At first, fairly dense but then fanned out and became lighter. Completely dry, fantastic acidity, late minerality, and some vanilla on top of the Riesling fruit. Only at the very end of the bottle did it exhibit any secondary petrol tones. The only other time I tasted it was over 5 years ago, when it seemed closed and young; now I would call it fully mature. Outstanding if not as amazing as these wines can be.

Dinner with Kane (Triomphe): The color was a bit darker than expected and the nose showed perhaps a bit advanced with good intensity of aromas that started out a bit wooly slowly revealing layers of light petrol, slate, dried figs and lots of pollen and dried floral notes. Crisp and focused in the mouth this offers great rapier-like acidity and crunchy minerality with rich apricot notes appearing on the backend leading to a long finish with citrus and peach pit notes. Relaxes with air offering a but more body and softening at the edges. This drinks more youthful than I expected from the nose. Will improve.

Trimbach Riesling--A Snapshot of Mid-1990s Vintages (Home): In stark contrast, the oldest bottle seemed the most youthful of the bunch. Light, limpid in color, very backward on the nose and palate, with limestone minerality coaxed out of it only after being open for about 4 hours. The perfect Riesling for Chablis lovers. I don't know if it has all of the components to a be a transcendent Clos St. Hune, but it will last forever.

This wine is starting to come into its own. Clos Ste. Hune is renowned for producing wines that need considerable time in bottle before showing their full potential. This is like a Riesling on steroids. The wine was fresh and vibrant and anyone would be hardpressed to say this was a 10 year old wine if they tried it double blind. It had a floral and oriental spice nose. Tangy fruit notes of pear and apple concentrate with vibrant acidity. Minerally finish. Outstanding. My WOTN. 93-94 points.

Tasted at Vino Me's Alsatian dinner. Aromas of petrol and lemon meringue. Everything about the tasting experience was amped to another level, like this had a sixth gear while the other Alsatians in the lineup had five. Super-intense, with a still-concentrated core of citrus fruit and minerals. A slightly herbal edge - mint or basil. The finish was long, but not close to fanning out. Still a very young wine that will undoubtedly improve for another 5-10 years. A real thoroughbred.

Darker yellow color. Nicely developed. Still crisp acidity and nicely secondary at this stage. Pretty good for a lesser vintage.
