At 10 years old, this still comes across as young and primary when opened, with immense smoky and meaty notes overwhelming most of the rest of the wine. They subside with an hour or so in the decanter, coming more into balance with rich dark berry fruit and some mineral undertones. Tannins are resolved at this point, and the wine comes across as a little soft to my palate (but then again, I'm an acid/structure freak). The last third of the bottle the following day is even more restrained and elegant. I'm pretty shocked by the life left in this wine; not sure where it goes from here...

Tasted from 375, I enjoy the Novy line of wines, solid QPRs and this wine is no exception. Somewhat primary nose, blackberry and spice on the palate with a nice lingering finish. For $10 you can't go wrong.

Very nice. I had this in a 375ml bottle which was convenient as I wanted some syrah with my pasta. Not much on the nose but rich blackberry flavor. Good balance and medium length finish. Some spice and tar. Also good QPR.

Are you kidding me? This was $19? Yeah, it was, and it was freaking delicious. A little shy on the nose, but the fruit practically exploded on the palate, and it had a lllooonnnggg finish to boot. Tons of blueberry, a hint of pepper, and an almost citrusy acidity on the finish. Would have liked some more pepper and maybe some minerality, but how much complexity can you expect at this price?

Been almost 3 years since I drank one of these and either the wine is changing, my palate is changing, or both. What find this time is a wine that cuts a broad path across the palate, with a pile of black cherry fruit and a good dose of acidity. Lard and peppery nose. Find some tar, too. This wine is quite generous for the $19 I paid (and I believe the price now for the current release is still pretty close to this point, too) but not sappy or heavy. Just pleasing, full of big flavor, and a nice lingering finish.

Drank two bottles this night, both 375s. The first bottle had about an hour of air before I got to it. Very well balanced and refined, with lots of blackberry and blueberry on the nose and palate, medium bodied with medium length finish. The second, popped and poured after the first bottle was finished, was not quite as open and the tannins were a bit grittier. Still, this has come a long way since my last bottle about ten months ago. Blended score for the two bottles, call it 90 and 88. The hour of air really did wonders for this wine. My 750s will sleep for another year or so before trying again.

An almost irridescent purple at the rim. Nice. Nose is slightly candied with blue fruit and wet earth, too. Palate has softened nicely over the year, with candied cherries and a creamy-vanilla essence amidst a smoky-oaky essence. Finishes a bit short, a tad grapey at times, but in a nice drinking space right now. Still a great value.

Deep purple color with lighter halo. Big nose, blackberries. Nicely balanced with mouth-coating tannins. When first opened, the taste started with smoke and a hint of leather! Black cherries and berries flavor on the mid palate. Very long finish.

It seems like I can't keep my hands off these guys. Still a great value at less than $20. I found this bottle to be a bit more bitter in the citrus rind sort of way than previously. Still nice flavors but just not as voluptuous as previously noted.

From 375. On the nose, blackberries, earth and smoke. On the palate, medium-bodied with blackberry, black cherry and vanilla, with a medium length, somewhat tannic finish. This one took over an hour to open, and still more time for the tannins to soften.

From .375 Gave it about 30 mins in glass to get up to room temp, and this was doing fine. Simple and enjoyable, good fruit, aroma, moderate depth and weight, and a backbone that should still allow this to stay on for another 2-4 years. Outstanding QPR @ $10 for a split.

This bottle was hitting on all cylinders today. A nose that just grabbed you from a couple feet away. Dark berries, forest floor and an ample amount of oak. a hedonistic wine that was just a joy to drink. Really fell apart however after a day in the decanter. i don't see this getting any better with bottle time, but then again, it won't get much worse for a couple years.

This is really starting to unwind nicely. It's beginning to get that creamy middle and black pepper start and finish that the '03 had. I'm not sure it will ever be as good as that '03, but it should come close with another few months of bottle. Not a profound wine by any means, but a very good drinker.

Tasted this after a 2000 La Loviere. Not sure if the enviornment hurt the showing, but this showed horribly. Upon opening, nose immediately shows roasted black fruit, surmaturite, and lots of heat. Sweet black fruit on the palate that doesnt show enough brightness. Really just too ripe. Can't complain too much given the $19 price tag, but this is a producer I tend to enjoy (pinot at least) and I know they make nice wine for $19 (2004 Willamette pinot).

Deep, inky purple. A big juicy nose of blackberry, blueberry, licorice, asian spice, and vanilla. Full and thick in the mouth, with lots of berry fruit, pepper, and sandlewood. The spicy fruit finish lasts a long time, with firm, ripe tannins. A big syrah and a very tasty wine.

Decanted and poured. Medium-bodied wine that is dark magenta in color. On the nose, blueberries and vanilla. On the palate, dark berry fruit wrapped in a well-balanced package and ending in a 20-second finish that features light black pepper. This wine does not have the complexity and weight of the Novy single vineyard bottlings, but then again, it's also a fair bit cheaper in cost.

Been about 3 weeks since this was shipped to me so thought I'd finally try. This comes out of a 375 ml. Opened last night. Needed some air to shake out, as my initial impression was I did not care for it. Lots of red flavors. After breathing though, much improved. Blue fruits, along with the red, bittersweet chocolate and a juicy mid-palate.
Just retasted again tonight. There is clearly a blue fruit component, like blueberry, supported by some red berry-ish notes (Adam calls it plum/boysenberry in the mailer). The nose shows what I would call a new oak feel, with vanilla along with some slight pepper/bbq spice and a hint of tampenade (like last night). The wine tightens up on the finish so additional bottle age would be noted.
Based on what I taste, I like it. You can almost smell the ripeness and florals of the Judge fruit, as well as the peppery note that showed so dynamically on the 03 Christensen--both of these vineyards are in this blend. At $19 for a 750 ml, still a great value.

My first Novy. This wine started really shut down. Started to open after 1 hr and continued to give pleasure through 3 hrs. Blueberry pie, graham cracker on the nose. Great dark color and restrained but present tannins. This definitely will benefit from another year or two of bottle time. I will definitely continue to buy from this great winery in the future
