Served blind. On the nose, it sing of the Rhône, the taste leads in direction of Burgundy; this starts out with very pronounced acidity. Gains in the glass, more fruit present, more complexity and fullness, still remains a 2004 - after the detour to Burgundy, I managed to guess Côte-Rôtie and more or less the vintage as well. The lightnes gives this away to some extend. #PB

Very French balance. Fruit still present and felt younger than expected for the vintage. Should be aged a bit more. Nice gaminess, acidity and tannins balance, with a good concentration. Rather serious than fun side of the côte rôtie.

Dark red, a little murky. Dark red fruits with notes of undergrowth. Nice medium body with good acidity, tannins resolved but still providing good structure. Finishes medium long and complex. Drinking well now but should still last for a while.

Christmas Wimps (La Tromplette, Chiswick): Slightly subdued at first, then floral, with pure underlying dark fruit. Medium bodied, leish but attractively so, elegant, pure dark fruit, retains its floral character on the palate, vibrant acidity with fine but still perceptible tannin, good length finish. Excellent, classic Cote-Rotie, still quite youthful. ****

Cote Rotie (Harwood Arms, London): Slightly dusty, floral nose with a hint of violets. Quite bright and reasonably pure. Lighter and a touch dilute for the Janet, though this floats in and out a little. Convincing. ****

Mid-red, narrow but aged rim. Initially reduced with a spike of acid lift. Opens up and relaxes after about twenty minutes. Complex yet elegant bouquet. Pretty spices from the new wood, a touch of something dry and mineral maybe even peppery, darker-skinned stone fruits. This whispers rather than shouts, but is elegant and constantly changing. Medium-bodied at most, slightly redder fruit profile than the bouquet suggests. Occasional hints of violet and pot pourri contrasting with the slightly creamy fruit. Beautiful acidity keeps this all in a compact envelope and gives it a long and elegant feel. Nice length with only a hint of very fine tannins which appear in the mid-palate rather than the finish. Structurally this is Burgundian style wine, being more about the acid than the tannin. Drinking well now, the acidity will keep it going and time may reveal more, but I get a sense that this is it. Drink now to 2024.
Rule the Rhone; 10/27/2016-11/3/2016 (Northern & Southern Rhone): The oldest wine on the lunch menu (in fact, the only one that was not from the last 4 years) and so although we'd never heard of it we decided to take a chance. It's leather and cigar box and hints of red fruit and just a touch of sourness. Very drinkable. Paired with a rumpsteak and it worked well as a combination.

This shows class – it is creamy, yet lean, strict, mineral, elegant, initially closed, but opens on day 2 & 3. 92+ points, could go higher, has the stuffing. Will keep.

2004 Rhone Tasting chez Lillelund (Lilleund's home): Now we are talking. Very young and restrained, but lots of material here. Structured, cool, feminine and elegant. Hidden potential. Needs more time in the cellar to unfold.

No formal notes - over dinner. Ripe dark fruit and spices on the nose - very elegant and showing lots of depth. Very well balanced on the palate, soft tannins, good fruit, gentle with good acidity and notes of sweet spices, tobacco. Fine length. Drinking well, but no rush. 91-93

Delicate aromas of blueberries, fresh violets, cured meat, tobacco leaves, and spice. Fruit and spice persist on the palate. Medium acidity. Very enjoyable, feminine wine.

Very pure red fruited Syrah that is very graceful with good acidity. This wine picked up more depth over a 3 day period when poured into a 375 ml so this could be held and enjoyed later. Very good bottle of wine

Excellent.

France Trip Part 2 - Northern Rhône; 6/18/2006-6/20/2006: Barrel sample tasted at the domaine. 9 barrels to be produced (175 cases). Clean cherry fruit, moderate tannin. More concentrated than the 2004 Cuvee Classique. Light to medium body. A little tart and green. Blind, I would peg this as a Burgundy.

Barrel sample tasted at the domaine. Vines planted inthe 1930s. Rocky soil. 4.5 ha. 9 barrels made. More concentrated fruit than the Cuvee Classique. Beautiful, bright cherry. In the mouth, very elegant; almost Burgundian. Pure cherry fruit. Quite impressive.

Elegant wine, somewhat strict, very much in the mineral side; vertical and serious, good freshness here, good balance.
