Like Kevin (DCWino) wrote, this wine was fairly subtle. Reminded me of Chassagne on the nose, but the palate was more mineral driven and slightly tropical. I thought domestic Chardonnay, but couldn’t place it.

Lemon, Meyer lemon, chalk, light herbal/floral nuances. Palate round and oily, concentrated and leads to a long finish. Still a touch of alcohol, but fullness of the wine moves past it with rounded acidity that just cuts the richness and then freshens the finish. World class.

Some very smart people revere aged Chardonnay, but I am not among them (in intellect, inclination, or many other ways!). Aside perhaps from a few examples from the Old World, I count myself among the skeptics, who - and pick your adjectives - prefer youth over maturity, energy over nuance, citrus over nuts. That said, I figured it was time to test this prejudice through the lens of what I think is the pinnacle of CA Chardonnay - Aubert’s Lauren. What was the result?
I enjoyed the wine, but I did not love it. Do the fans of maturity have a point? Yes, the wine changes over a decade's time, adding depth and character in surprising ways (read: if you like to parse the flavors of nuts - e.g., almond, praline - this is your jam). Do I want to age my Aubert wines for a decade to be at their best? Nope, not even close: I love the tension and freshness of the younger wines (i.e., the 4-5 year mark is probably my sweet spot, but to each his own). Bottom line: this wine didn’t fall apart at the decade mark, but it didn’t take flight, either.
Light yellow in color and full in body, the wine offers notes of honeycomb (read: sweet, wild, a little crunchy), along with almond, creme brûlée, and lemongrass. The flavors are integrated and fulsome, with notes of brioche, beeswax, and baked pineapple, followed by a lively but somewhat milky finish. This has far more energy than a 2013 Marcassin I had a few weeks ago (so perhaps the apprentice have overtaken the master!), though both share a nutty viscosity and open-knit profile. 15% alcohol. Decant about an hour. 92-93 at the moment, but no further aging is required: if you have a palate like mine (immaturity and all), drink soon.
This bottle was slightly advanced as I’ve had better bottles of this before. Still pretty good chardonnay. It’s just the fruit has begun to fade leaving more pronounced oak and detracting from the usual silky creaminess of these wines.

Popped and poured. Fabulous. The floral nose on this is just entrancing. I had to return to it over and over. The wine is silky and elegant, medium to full bodied, concentrated and complex. Orchard fruits, minerals and a little hazlenut. Long finish. Up there with the top chardonnays I have ever had in Cali

Kleur: Medium goudgeel.
Color: Medium golden yellow Aroma / bouquet: Lush Sonoma-Chardonnay with a pleasant bouquet. The nose of this wine is more than pleasant. But on the palate, this wine shows itself really grand and impressive. Juicy impressions of citrus, tropical fruit and vanilla. Taste / Finish: Mouth-filling, thick-juicy, tasty, harmonious and complex. On the palate, this wine presents itself as a celebration of fruit impressions. Soft citrus acidity, juicy melon and richer notes of pineapple and banana. Long finish with some roasted nuts in the final. Very good. Upon PnP, it's very good, and, unsurprisingly, got even better from that moment forward. Not quite full-bodied, but certainly full-flavored, with a matching level of complexity. Nuance and elegance at every turn. Wonderful. Should hold another 5+ year pretty easily based on this example. highly recommended

Decanted for an hour. Lemon meringue, stone, honeydew melon, fig paste, white flowers and pan grille. Finished long, with so much savoir faire and individuality. There’s tension and focus, but this magnetic openness that has developed. I am loving the ‘12s at the current moment. Drink now - 2027.

Popped and poured. This is terrific. Dreamy nose of orchard fruits and white flowers. The palate is concentrated but light and airy. There are flavors of white peach, apple, cream and mineral coming through. The wine is complex and elegant and should continue to age for a few more years. One of the best Auberts I have had recently.
Three days later it’s still in fine shape indicating this can go the distance.

Aubert's 2012 Lauren sports a killer nose of pear, zesty citrus, hazelnut, mushroom, and spice. Concentrated and rich. Opulent fruit yet, as usual for this producer, the wine is harmonious and vibrant and everything is just where you want it.

Rich and hedonistic, but as I always say about Aubert, somehow this finds balance. Yellow fruit, ginger, crushed rock. Incredible concentration. Significant improvement from my bottle two years ago.

A small gathering with COVID safety measures (Reston, Va): I thought mostly white fruit only two years ago. Medium expressive nose displaying rich concentrated yellow fruit, peach, pineapple, honey, crème burlee, sweet spices and earth. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated yellow tropical fruit, rich and oily, medium acidity, medium mineral and a medium to long sweet yellow fruit driven finish with butter scotch at the end. Now, it has transformed to a classic style of Aubert, i.e. concentrated and rich. No need to wait.

This is a little bigger and structured than some of the bottlings. Apricot and melon on top of a citrus base. A little bit of an edge that took away some from the wine.

What makes this such a great Chardonnay is its balance. While it has bright tropical fruit and concentration, there is a finesse between fruit and its mineral expression. However, my palate is not refined enough to truly discern the differences between a $120 bottle of Chardonnay and a $40 of Chardonnay. It is much easier to do this with Red wine.

Winner winner !! But truthfully both are awesome. Immediate viscous and cream textured wine with lemon, tropical fruits and mascarpone cream mouthfeel.
The Aubert Lauren ages beautifully. My style and my fav of the 2 tonight. Rich, layered and oak driven. More restrained acidity than the 15' but also more butterscotch and balanced.

Lauren continues to be my favorite Aubert. I cannot understand the negative comments of others on ABV. Wine is a beautiful golden color, with a nose of citrus with some floral notes and no alcohol; great mouthfeel with silky texture and again, to me, no heat, medium citrus notes, moderate acidity and a terrific, long finish. The best California has to offer

Appealing fruit, strong mineral depth, judicious oak treatment. Highly enjoyable...minus the listed 15 abv, that is. Wow! I mean 15 abv! What's up with that!? Serve extra chilled to hide the heat, though beware the repercussion. If 13.5 abv or lower, score it 94 points.

Quite dark golden color. Flashy tropical nose with lots of heat coming through. 15.0% ABV! Though well hidden it is definitely there. more tropical fruit than Citrus or stone, with some butterscotch and honey flavors. Unctuous and full bodied but that alcohol is still a little too noticeable.

Had with lunch today. Rich, on the oaky side with flavors of butterscotch, honey, some almond and fleshy tropical fruit. Good acidity though to balance the wine. Enjoyable, if a bit sweet and oaky.

Dallas CTers visit NYC offline: A lovely mouth coating chardonnay that was equal parts rich and bright. The acidity here really holds the rich golden apple fruit in great balance. I don't drink a lot of CA chard, but this was quite enjoyable.

15.0% abv. Light gold, clear rim. Tropical fruit, flowers, toasted brioche, lanolin, a whiff of heat. Med plus mouthfeel. Juicy, acid streak that helps elevate the fruit. Pineapple, lemon, honey, almond. Finishes long and layered. Apart from noticeable heat (on pnp) this is outstanding. Will see how it develops over next 24 hrs.
This wine had a yellow center and clear rims. It still looks very young. The medium+ intensity nose is rather kaleidoscopic and showed pineapple, toasty vanilla, lemons, apples, minerals and a touch of excess alcohol.
In the mouth, this wine was fascinating in that it was fruity and rich and yet firm and serious at the same time. It was certainly beautifully made but just a touch "hot".
This wine is starting to come around and it is an excellent American Chard. It richness and length are amazing. However, I doubt that bit of extra toastiness and and alcohol will dissipate with time.

Yellow color with a bouquet and flavor of butterscotch, pineapple, and toasted bread. Balance and focus waning a bit, liking reflecting bottle age, but still very good. Aubert makes some of the best Chardonnays, new world or old.

Golden yellow. Opulent, ripe apricot and tangerine fruit. A massive Chardonnay that immediately seizes your attention. Definitely a “wow” wine. Terrific tonight but I worry that if this sheds much fruit the underlying alcohol might become overwhelming. I’d drink this over the short term.

Cool nose shows pear, cinnamon, and toasted oak. Lightweight body with oak-framed flavors of white fruit. Finishes long but with oak-derived sweetness and drying tannins. Smaller scale than your usual Aubert, the 2012 Lauren Vineyard hasn't tamped down the oak to balance the lighter fruit or body, to its detriment.

Popped and poured. This is a light gold wine. On the nose, I get marshmallow, sea breeze, spring flower, apple-cinnamon toast, and some corn bread. In the mouth, this is a mid-weight yet plush wine with some sweet yellow fruits, all leaving a finish of sweet pineapple. Overall, this is surprisingly sweet but not bad for CA Chard. This has some good years left. 91 points.

PnP. Medium gold. Nose of orchard fruits, especially peach and pear and a touch of vanilla. On the palate this is intense with good acidity and ripe fruit but is lacking that knife-edge balance that the best Auberts have. This may just be a touch too ripe for me; the alcohol also detracts a bit in my estimation. Nice but not great; drink up as I think the acidity is too low for this to age well.

Tampa Spring Break III; 2/16/2018-2/18/2018 (Tampa FL): This has a rich fruited nose of apple, honey and caramel. The palate is consistent with the rich nose - butter and honeycomb but very well balanced with good acidity. I find it simultaneously rich and bright. A bit of heat on the finish. Normally I don't care for chardonnay from the new world but this was quite interesting and enjoyable. Nice transition from bubbles to the reds.

Bad boy wine night - mostly high octane wines with a surprise or two. (The Grill Room at Rosewood DC): Surprisingly subtle and controlled for an Aubert, mostly white fruit, pear, apple, a hint of lemon curd, cinnamon, oak, sesame and limestone. The palate closely mirrors the nose, cool and fresh, medium acidity, strong mineral presence and a medium to long finish with a hint of heat at the end. Perhaps wait for a couple more years hoping that this will drink like the 10 version served next.

Pale yellow-golden. Very aromatic, pronounced chardonnay aromas combining mineral elements with some buttery notes. Nicely balanced oak aromas, already complex. Big mouthful of flavor, loads of fruit, coats the tongue, slightly hot. Some oak, but nicely balanced. The heat carries through to a long finish with plenty of residual chardonnay flavor. Excellent now, should easily last and maybe improve over the next several years. Ric

The best California Chardonnay I've ever had... It combines the best California has to offer, but in a style that comes straight from Corton-Charlamagne. Reminiscent of Domaine Bonneau du Martray, which is one of my favorite White Burgs. Almost tasted like lemon muringe pie laced with white flowers, crushed rocks, and minerals. Delicious!

Lush rich Aubert. The lasting characteristic for me is that lemon meringue pie filling on the rich palate. Its thick and dense. There is enough acidity here. It's not going to be for everyone. I do not know the alcohol off the top of my head, and while this is not hot, its there. This wine is not a California oak bomb. It has its moments. Quite enjoyed it on this night but I preferred the 06 Mearsault.

I feel like Debbie Downer here ("wah-wah!"). It must just be this bottle given the other high scores. This was thin and kind of simple, with a little heat. I tried it with an air time of 1-4 hours...temps of 50-65 degrees and no descernible differences...and used a Pinot glass. I have had inconsistent results with Aubert Chardonnay so far: May/14 an '09 Ritchie 88 - June/14 a '10 Lauren 94 - January/15 a '12 Eastside 99 and now this. Not sure what to make of it all. I'm not saying it was bad, it was just OK. There was some nice oak and vanilla, but no bright fruit. Not a great QPR for this one. One final, albeit pleasantly surprising (and at the same time disappointing), note. I stood the bottle up overnight to let the sediment settle (as per Aubert's recommendation). I drank 90% of it this way, but left the remainder in the bottle so as not to mix the settled sediment with the wine to be drunk. After finishing the decanted wine, I poured the dregs and voila! Beautiful! Rich, viscous, vanilla. OMG! Makes me wonder what the rest of the wine would have been like had I consumed it with the sediment mixed in. I'll never know as this was my only bottle. Word to the wise, experiment!
This wine had a light yellow center and clear rims. The medium intensity nose seemed a bit closed despite substantial air. It showed lemons, vanilla, quince, and some hazelnuts.
This wine clearly evidenced high-end wine winemaking. It was rich, ripe and lush with firm but nicely integrated acidity. As one would expect, the wine was a bit muted given it was so young. However, it had style and outstanding length. After 6 hours of air it became more powerful and showed a lot of minerals. The wine's new oak is reasonably subtle but noticeable. There is reason to believe that the oak flavors will be pushed further into the background as other flavors emerge.
Overall, this is an impressive young wine but it is hard to tell for sure how it will resolve. However, it seems like a wine worth cellaring. My guess is it will pick up 2 to 3 points with 10+ years.

Fat, rich, sweet, lush, round and packed with juicy, citrus fruits, pears, apples and a tropical note. Vanilla tones are present in the nose and on the palate, but there is more than enough ample layers of fruit to overcome the oak. This is big, concentrated, opulent, complex expression of California Chardonnay.

--- COLOR: Deep, translucent gold NOTE: In my top 5 Chards, it's that good. This is Montrachet clone, so i tried it in my Riedel Montrachet glass but the minerality was overwhelming. Use a regular Bordeaux stem and it sings. When decanting this thing it had a lot of tiny bubbles but no effervescent mouthfeel. It disappeared after 2 hours. Nose has fresh, ripe pineapple, lemon oil, custard, limestone, vanilla and honeysuckle. Mouth is just gorgeous, with copious amounts of lemon glycerin, truly opulent, "liquid minerals". Best Aubert mouth ever. Finish is bright but has great toasted marshmallow to balance all the elements. 45 second finish, long and pure. May be my fav Aubert Chard of all time.

Clear, pale/medium lemon in color with pronounced aromas of orange blossom, honeysuckle, peach, apricot and pear intertwined with wisps of candied ginger and buttered almond. Dry with medium acidity and high alcohol. Pronounced flavors of aforementioned fruit are elegantly presented atop an underlying base minerality. Full bodied with notable viscosity; a creamy, softly textured presence in the mouth and on the palate is presented that deftly lingers into a long glorious finish. Oak is here but is so beautifully integrated that one barely notices its presence. A real treat at present and should drink well for a decade or beyond if one can resist getting into earlier.

Tasted this against the 2015 Lauren.

COLOR: Deep, translucent gold
NOTE: In my top 5 Chards, it's that good.

This is a lovely chardonnay, by far my favorite. It's so clean and complex. I detect apple, pear, lemon, light butter and more. Superb!

Beat Marcassin and five other heavy hitters in a blind wine tasting. Well balanced, elegant, and brimming with flavor.

One of the most balanced Chardonnays I've had. Rich fruit flavors of apple, pear and lemon, with some honey and baking spice notes. Firm acidity that refreshes the finish. Minimal well-integrated oak.

Concentrated and rich, this is a decidedly polarizing style of chardonnay. The nose has pineapple and lemon meringue. Enjoyable for those who appreciate a "cult wine" style of winemaking. Would recommend letting this sit for a few years regardless.

One of the best Chards Ive had. Rich, creamy, yet delicate and full of tropical fruits with mineral notes near the finish. This ones a keeper.

A wonderful expression of this varietal. No noticeable oak whatsoever. Very round, viscous mouthfeel. Impeccable balance. Low-medium acidity.

Kathy's birthday wine. Lovely nose of pear juice, orange, and mango, more of the same on the palate, very viscous and mouth coating, Corton Charlemagne like to me, young, vibrant complexity on the mid palate, medium/big body, and lovely, long finish.

--- Tasting at Aubert with Philip Gift
COLOR: translucent lemon
NOTE: nose of lemon crème brulee. Mouth is rich & round, full of glycerin, sweet lemon curd, very refined. Finish is smoky & less sweet than the Ritchie but more balanced. Slight heat. Stacy loves this.
This is a Montrachet clone.
