  • Fully mature, cool-fruited, tertiary notes. Less interesting than the 2000 and 2003, but still a good example of mature Marcoux. Time to drink up.

  • Big Bottle Outdoor Party 3.0 or so (Northern Lüneburg Heath): From MAG:
lovely mature bottle, silky, a very silky flow, fully blossomed, typical Syrah like fruit showing, some meat, leather, long, food friendly,
    but would say: drink up!

  • Superb nose of soy sauce, cèpes de Bordeaux, animal, high salty cherries... Delicious tasty red salty cherries, dry and refreshing finish, lenght of 30 sec.

  • Medium red color. On sour cherry notes, asian spices, a hint of tomato. Cool and airy with good lift. There’s herbs and garrigue as well, this is very local. A Chateauneuf from a great vintage, of course, but also a Chateauneuf that takes me back in time.

  • From half. On opening and decant to remove sediment the nose was all about figs. After a while the palate was predominantly figs, raisins and other darker fruits. Quite light. Resolved and fine.

  • Very floral nose, groseilles rouges, very delicate and feminine, nice oriental spices, herbes de Provence... Still very young and vibrant, sappy tannins, red groseilles, crisp acidity in the finish.

  • Fully mature nose displaying soft red and black fruit, blackberry, red cherry, tobacco, garrigue and earth. Fully resolved palate, soft, silky and round, and a medium long subtle red fruit driven finish.

  • Rhone Commanderie dinner (Little Park): As though there was a 2001 theme for CdP's at the dinner (or anyway two that came on the heels of each other). Another more restrained producer in style although CdP always more fruit forward than some of the other rhone regions. I appreciated the balance that the age gave here. It was drinking nicely.

  • Lo Hei dinner at Peach Garden (Peach Garden, OCBC Building): From a magnum, this was very enjoyable. The nose had a nice whiff powdered herbs, dried earth, then savoury meat and sweet dried cherries, all garlanded with sprigs of wild garrigue. Very Southern Rhone. The palate was attractive too. Very fresh and nicely structured, with lovely bright 2001 acidity and fine, powdery tannins framing pure flavours of black cherries and cassis infused with high-toned notes of spice and garrigue. Pleasant finish as well, with nice fresh acidity speared through dark berry fruits and a little kiss of spice. Nothing profound, but pretty good stuff nonetheless, drinking nicely now from a magnum.

  • To me, the 2001 Marcoux has never tasted better than it does now. The fruit is still fresh and vibrant, there's marks of cherries, strawberry and raspberry combined with garrigues and earthy notes. This is a very upright wine, structured and focused. What a nice journey this has been on and I'm convinced it doesn't end here.

  • Alas, my last bottle - and very good indeed. Fully mature, local and generous but still with that cool and somewhat dry finish, that is telling for Marcoux Tradition. It will keep, but not improve, I think. Tasted vis-vis the Grenache-concentrated VV and again one concludes, that these two cuvees are so very different...

  • Pulled from my cellar after 12 years. Aerated and decanted for an hour. Bricking and clear around the edges with some grit. Raisin and dried fruit on the nose. Very soft and creamy upfront with a touch of pruniness on the finish. Overall a nice elegant aged wine that needs to be drank in the next year or so.

  • Another great showing for this wine. Approaching maturity with a soft, subtle expression of brown fruit and Christmas spices in a very elegant (for a Chateauneuf) way. There's a sensible sweetness here, a warm, baked quality to the fruit. This is a very good Marcoux.

  • Stunned by this on tonight - seemed to have hit the sweet spot; Grenache much more pronounced now, more local feel than ever, the wine is round, creamy, very delicate and open. Will keep, but go to town ... I cannot see it get better.

  • I don't think it will get any better. This is a winter wine. Christmas spices with good minerality. Very big.

  • Very powerful nose of oriental spices, sandalwood, hints of nice iodine... very nice taste of sweet strawberries with oriental spices.
Note: at opening this wine showed thin, high acidity and high alcohol 89/100... it improved dramatically after 3 hours slow ox!!

  • I was disappointed. That could be chalked up to any number of factors, but I expect the two main factors were the travel this bottle underwent before consumption and my own changing preferences. The wine tasted a little stressed, lacked both body and a touch of acidity. Possibly very lightly maderized as well.

  • from half bottle: intense port aromas, puh......, on the palate very spicy, clove, compote fruit, very smooth, concentrated, long finish, for me this bottle shows too many tertiary aromas, I think that I missed the right drinking point...., **(+), 83- 87?

  • Cool. still. While it lacks the open-arm, generous style of your old fashioned rich neuf, this has something else; an elegant tone, underneath the rough exterior of a true southerner. This will keep, I am sure, but I think it is peaking now as a true representative of the vintage & of the house Cuvée Normale.

  • Other reviewers describe this well. I would add that my bottle had heavy sediment, adding to the thick, ripe character.

  • Ripe fruits both on the nose and palate. Like a mix of plum and prune but never crossing the line toward stewed fruit. Throw in some cherry and wild strawberry. Nice herbs and leather notes. Full body and nicely balanced. Somehow typical, old school CdP. I liked it but it may have lacked a little bit complexity though.

  • Very nice nose of beefblood and spices, mushrooms, pain d'épices, black cherries and licorice... fresh red cherries, ripe tannic structure, fresh with red berries and ripe red cherries

  • Mostly Rieslings: Aromas of smoke, tobacco and pine tree mix with berry compote and beef broth. A really interesting nose that shows a lot of different elements. The palate shows fine tannins and medium-to-high acid. The beef broth, bay leaf and pepper flavors complement the tart strawberry and red currant fruit very well. Flavors of pine, sage and tobacco carry the finish. Quite elegant and restrained at this point in its life, this wine went very well with pork belly and an eggplant dish.

  • Surprisingly elegant, almost pretty, the 2001 Marcoux is in a really good spot right now. There is some initial funk on the nose that blows off after a while, then leading on to a wine which is well structured and well proportioned with a mix of red fruits, rhubarb jam, licorice and spices. I really like the restraint here, this is good Chateauneuf du Pape and it will last.

  • A better showing on the third night where the Grenache is showing it's red-fruited side with flavors of cherry and strawberry fruit. Gently spiced, behind the red fruit. Very well contained wine with good structure and balance. Clearly young, perhaps too young right now, with the potential to turn into something really special with time.

  • This is an impressive Chateauneuf du Pape. After several years of disappointing appearances, this wine is out there strutting its stuff. The nose is rather funky and marked by farm aromas and rhubarb/strawberry compote. The palate is fresh and full of pretty, red fruit on the outset - this is still a young wine. With air, this opens up to show more Marcoux character of brownish fruit and Christmas spices. Persistent finish, sits on the back palate with flavors of anise, licorice, and deep red fruit. Excellent wine, truly, and I'm happy to have a lot more in the cellar. However, kindly remember that this is a fall/winter wine.

  • Coming around nicely and drinking really well right now. Spicy nose and palate with warm, baked fruit in the brown end of the spectrum yet there is no doubt about the Grenache origins. Very good structure and balance here, almost on the elegant side. On a good path after some erratic performances at age 6-10, this is turning in to a great Chateauneuf. Will go another 10 years I think.

  • The last of several I have purchased over the years from a stash that Bassin's seems to keep well hidden. Past its prime? Aren't we all. An old man sitting on his porch at the end of the first fall day that's actually felt that way: comfortable with the passage of time.

  • Drinking very well now ... wish this wasnt my last bottle. Wine opened up very well and was a great match for flannery burgers. No specific notes, but certainly less scorched than first bottle (drank a couple of years ago). nice secondary flavors, acidity and medium-to-long finish. While not great, it was very good.
Not sure how much upside here IMHO.

  • The 2001 Marcoux has finally reached a point where I find it resolved and rather good actually. A nose of fine, red cherry fruit, christmas spices, garrigue and pepper. Elegant and spicy palate with marks of brown fruit, dates and fig-jam, garrigue, pepper and a hint of canned tomates (a mark I sometimes find in Rayas as well). A wine in good balance with a good amount of complexity and a sense of place. A relief, since I bougth quite a few cases of this wine and had some less positive experiences along the way. No hurry to drink up.

  • Quite cool, pebbery, well balanced, good acidity, an elegant food-wine, very much old world, almost northern in style. Will keep.

  • This was the "black label" Marcoux, not the tan label (the difference being that the grapes for this "black label" wine come from a plot of land not owned by the Armeniers but, as I understand it, farmed by them and the wine from those grapes is also made by them but labeled separately). Good entry of resolved CdP, wild strawberry, underbrush and garrigue. These flavors are bouyant and interesting, and stand in contrast to the soft texture and mouthfeel of an aged, resolved wine. Tannins are very soft. I don't see this wine getting any better and think it should be enjoyed now. While there was no oxidation overnight in a .375, the wine definitely lacked freshness and couldn't keep my interest on the second night. Drink now.

  • This was the "black label" Marcoux, not the tan label. I opened the '01 tan label Marcoux a couple of months ago, and did not like it, calling it sharp and diffuse. This black label showed much better, smooth and at peak. Good core of fruit surrounded by complexities, the fruit itself still shows some inner sweetness and is approaching, but is just short of, turning raisiny and pruney. I would certainly drink these now to short term.

  • Huge blackberry nose at first, bright and inviting, I was looking forward to drinking this. But then it takes a turn, the fruit losing its focus and showing more worn, then prune and raisin, with leather and spice on the palate. This should be in its prime, with a cohesive palate, but I would describe it as exactly the opposite: Diffuse. The tannins are smoothed, but there is no midpalate interest, no fruit sweetness, and little richness. The finish is rather sharp. Disappointing.

  • Lovely Chateauneuf. Much better than an overly roasted 2000.
Nice mix of grenache fruit and garrique. The 01's seem to be much better balanced to my taste than 98 or 2000. Drinking very well right now.

  • After a so-so bottle in June, this was an absolute wonder. Incredible spice on the nose, which showed a kind of raspberry liqueur and floral aromas, and perhaps some leather. On the palate rather firm acidity to the point of a nearly burgundian impression: musigny.

  • Although I've normally loved this wine, including a recently as last September, tthis particular bottle came off as rather woody. The nose was showing a lot of vanilla and toffee on top of the basic raspberry fruit, and was very enticing. But on the palate the oak came through as a primary flavor and to me, this left the bottle a bit off. I retasted it after dinner and the chance to breath helped a lot. So still 92 points but if you don't decant it first, you may have a less than thrilling result.

  • This is the "black label" Domaine et Selection, not the "regular" tan label Marcoux. My understanding is that it is from a plot of land farmed but not owned by the Armeniers and bottled separately from their holdings. Mature CdP on the nose and on the palate, resolved red fruit and texture, spice, but lacking a sweet inner core that should distinguish good CdP from great CdP, especially after nine years. In fact, there is a sharpness to the back palate. Solid B.

  • 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape single blind tasting (Rothmann's Steakhouse, New York): I don't have a good recollection of the Marcoux, but I remember it showed much better than the 2-3 bottles I've consumed over the last 12-18 months. It did show pretty red cherry fruit and spices but aside from that I have no notes to support. Good wine though and still young.

  • Excellent CdP, dark fruits on the nose, esp. blackberry and cassis, a bit of bacon fat. Well-integrated tannins. Quite powerful and assertive, but graceful.

  • Very much on its stride, this bottle opened with bretty notes but quickly shifted gears; after about an hour the profile was dominated by rich, ripe raspberry aromas and garrigue with hints of straw and vanilla in the background; long and flavorful and ripe. Very impressive!

  • Dinner with Jesús Barquín at Fernando's "En Español": Medium ruby color, cloudy. Big, complex nose of menthol, tobacco, wildflowers and clove. Beautifully precise red berries on the palate, with a few mint leaves thrown in.

  • Wow, wow, wow! What a nose this wine has -- just an amazing aroma of perfectly ripe raspberries in a bowl in warm sun with perhaps a spoonful of creme fraiche. On the palate it almost comes as a surprise that the wine is dry. A tremendous vintage for Marcoux that reminds me why I love this wine so much....

  • Consumed over 2 days, this bottle was much better than the previous 2 bottles I have opened within the last few months (thanks God because I own way too much of this wine). Clearly a young Marcoux, this wine shows more of the trademark pure red cherry fruit I expect from this estate. I find more precision and structure in the 2001 compared to the 2000 and 1998. Even though one might find the wine a tad heady, this is an excellent Chateauneuf that will live on for another 10 years at least.

  • I'm not sure what to make of this wine. It's charming and even a little delicate. The light raspberry nose walks on tippy toes (and continued, pretty much, to mince around for a good hour and half, at which point I just drank up). The palate is smooth with sweet fruit, balanced and bright, with smooth tannins. I wonder if the nose will improve (I don't think it was TCA--nothing worse than, well, almost nothing ever developed and I'm pretty sensitive to that anyway; I think the bottle's simply in a slightly closed phase). I like the wine, I think. I have another bottle and I'm looking forward to it. I wish it were cheaper.

Update: I should be clear here, that I am writing of the cream/white label bottling. Other drinkers (in particular, KPB, whose notes I follow closely) seem to be drinking the black/blue labeled bottling, which I know about but have never seen. I don't know what distinguishes these wines, but I'd be interested to find out....

  • With mom's rack of lamb. This was the "regular" tan label, as contrasted to the "black label" tasting note that I posted yesterday. I was expecting a big, dense, more structured and backward wine than the black label wine, but, like the black wine label wine, I find a very smooth wine, without the density and layers and "gobs" of fruit that I expected. The black label seemed to show more nuance, which makes sense since that wine is more evolved. Both the tan and black label Marcoux show a gentle, soft tannin. This wine is far from primary, indeed it is very smooth in the mouth and the structure is softer and more evolved than expected, yet this wine overall is not complex and is not showing the secondary qualities that one might expect, given the softness of the palate. The Marcoux blackberry fruit is there, along with some animal fur, and it shows just slightly baked fruits, but not in an overdone, too hot way that the '98 Marcoux demonstrates, more like Grandma's fruit compote. Good purity to the palate. While smooth and not rugged, with soft tannin, the wine is not complex. Sort of like in a holding period, at a midpoint, has lost the bulk and forwardness of youth, but has not yet developed the complexity and detail of a more mature wine, although the mouthfeel and softer structure might suggest that it should have.

  • This was the "black label" Marcoux, not the tan label, the difference being that the grapes for this wine come from a plot of land not owned by the Armeniers but, as I understand it, farmed by them and the wine from those grapes is also made by them but labeled separately. Lovely nose that begins rather assertive and heady with tree bark and peach tea, but then calms down with air and emits that unmistakable almond cookie dough/roasted peanuts of Chateauneuf. The palate is complex and mature, featuring a core of soft raspberry fruit and "red zinger" tea surrounded by nuances of pipe bowl, salted meat, light garrigue and gentle tannin. Though the wine is heading toward resolution and the tannins seem rather soft and broken down, there is a core of inner sweetness to this wine that distinguishes itself from this week's 2001 Brunel Les Caillloux that is simply aging without really acquiring any charm. At the same time that this wine shows that inner sweetness and charm, as the wine airs, the finish grows more dry, suggesting to me that this wine is at peak. This is not a profound wine, and this is likely a wine that is at or near maturity, but it is a very enjoyable wine.

  • Decided to revisit this wine, after almost two years in my cellar. Absolutely stunning stuff. Still deep ruby/purple,looks as youthful as it did on release. An hour after opening, the nose is striking for the pure raspberry essence that just roars from the glass, as if your nose was immersed in a quart of just-picked, very ripe raspberries. But I'm also finding spicy notes, hints of wax and tar, and violets. Sweet, long, very pure. Tannins are mild and fading. Good acdity that would please a burgundy drinker. Marcoux at its best.

  • This was the black label Marcoux. With Bruce and Avi. Direct and pure, a textbook Chateauneuf showing kirsch liquere notes, animal fur, light garrigue, cookie dough and light almond crème. Tannins are fine and the wine comes across as smooth and silky. No roasted notes at all, which I sometimes get from Marcoux. I was surprised at how open and direct this wine is today. A-

  • Double decanted for 45 minutes. Medium-bodied wine that is dark ruby in color. On the nose, slightly reticent dark cherries and licorice. On the palate, classic kirsch, garrigue, and white pepper, delivered in a clean, pure package. Beautifully balanced and smooth wine with a very long 30-40 second finish. My first Marcoux, and sure to not be my last!
