Though this was a very solid wine, even after 12 hours of decanting, over 2 days, it was a formidable opponent. Highly tannic, stubborn as they get, and not particularly generous. This has not been my experience with Charvin in general. But, it sure was this time.
Was the bottle in a dumb phase? Does it need more time to develop? Was it an off bottle?

My first Charvin. I have a bunch, purchased on elegant reputation and Burgundian styling. Ironically, finished a sixteen year old bottle of grand cru Burgundy before trying this and it seemed muscled up in comparison. Kirsch and beef stock flavors. Good typicity. Seemed very tight, tannic and bound up in terms of structure - like it could use another 2-3 years. Based upon the notes below though, could be some bottle variation too. Very promising though. 90

Really in a nice place right now, it has the classic kirschwasser-type flavors with some meaty overtones. The balance is lovely and I didn't notice the alcohol at all (but it was fairly cold, having come of the cellar earlier in the day).

Slightly disappointed again. Some alcohol poked through on the nose, perhaps unsurprisingly at 15%. Same issue on the palate at first, though it became less noticeable after a short decant. Quite a smooth and quaffable CNDP, but far from perfect and certainly nothing special here. 90-91.

Bottle opened late morning and slow-ox until service around 9pm. Pale, slightly cloudy garnet colour. Crushed wild strawberries, kirsch, eau de vie and white pepper. Palate is really very elegant, so much lighter than I was expecting for a CDP, kinda weightless, but with sandpaper fine tannins and a touch of extract that sneak up on the finish. A bit of heat appears on the end but seems to offer a comforting sensation more than anything else, like a warm hug!

Great Charvin. Wonderful aromatics of Provençal spicesand red fruits. Sappy red berry fruit in the palate, but quickly shows some serious acidity and tannin. Lengthy finish adding sandalwood and repeating spice notes. Great stuff—still on upswing.

An interesting showing. At first, this was pretty tight with an herbal and savory mineral twang with fine tannins. After a few hours being open it really unspooled and was filled with a pure cherry/raspberry compote note. The structure also loosed a bit but didn't get to loose. All good signs for the direction of this wine. I'd say it isn't far off from peak maturity and in a nice spot now if you can be a bit patient.

PNP - recommend drinking in next 12 months - Dark red/black color. On nose, garrigue, burnt cherry, black raspberry and a singe of alcohol. On palate, more balance but fruit is on the border of turning to a pruney/dried out flavor profile (if you dig that, give it another 6-12 months). Full body, medium tannins, medium acidity and long finish. 91-92 range. Very enjoyable but time to drink for my palate.

Tasted over two days - and most certainly better on day 2. Initially some weird pruny notes on the nose, on day 2 only sweet Grenache galore, lots of local feel, garrigue and Southern Accents. I don't see this as a long distance runner. #Kandestederne

First bottle of 12 from very cool storage. Entering it's prime drinking window, this really wakes up with air. Very local with accent on Grenache and garrigue, this is elegant, singing as always, very much a Charvin-wine. Like other 2012 it offers very immidiate drinking pleasure. Opened on instinct, good thing, we did it. #PB

I’m more and more concerned by the levels of Brett on these Charvin CRP reds. I am afraid he might have gone to more or less a natural wine model, and then if you don’t drink the wines on release, Brett is a big risk as time passes. This bottle is fine, but Brett pulls it down from how it was on release: I tried it then and it was genuinely a wonderful, exciting bottle. Now, at least this bottle, the most I can say is “fine.” Not rated.

92-93 pts

CdP clearance night. Split wine session. Tasted blind. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Long legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of garrigue, minty menthol herbs, dark red cherries, red plum, spices, olives. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (15%), medium+ tannins, medium+ body (strangely not as full as expected given the alcohol level). Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of garrigue, green olives, minty menthol herbs, spice, licorice, dark red cherries and red plum. Medium+ finish. Very good quality. Kind of lighter styled CdP but not totally elegant. Interesting herbal nature. Maybe some more age will flesh this out with more complexity. 85% Grenache, 5% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, 5% Vaccarèse.

Although I’m a fan of Charvin this bottling is extremely backward and shut down. There are hints of all the things I want and expect the wine to be but right now there’s not much there there. Hard to predict where it will be a few years down the road but it’s gotta be better than it is right now. It feels and tastes inert.

Manage your expectations. I was expecting a lot from this wine but was somehow a bit disappointed. Full bodied, high tannin and relatively high alcohol level. Much better after a couple of hours in a wide open decanter. Second bottle was flawed. Let's see how it evolves over the years.

Decanted 2 hours. I was expecting a lighter more elegant and Burgundian style but this was pretty big. It's still quite smooth and refined just a bit too massive for me and lacking a bit of je ne suis quoi. Better than a '12 clos des papes I had but that's not saying a great deal.

92+ pts

Very Châteauneuf-du-Pape but super traditional right out of the glass, with beautiful notes of kirsch, pepper and other spices, also some flowery/lavender notes, some beef blood too, and some minerality. It‘s medium-full bodied, with good medium+ acidity and medium-high tannin that will take a few years to melt away. Very good length. A superb Châteauneuf-du-Pape from this classic producer. Even the warmer year can‘t disturb the balance and elegance that is produced here. In today‘s world of CdP this is a good value too, especially if you like your CdP ageworthy.

Tight at the moment, air and coaxing helped, but it took effort to find the fresh, bright, red berries, thyme and assorted herbs. Medium bodied, and on the fresh side, the finish leaves you with just picked strawberry, kirsch and spice sensations. I'm waiting a few more years before popping another cork.

An intial nose of red cherries, cassis, violets and licorice was quickly and firmly pushed to the background by the overpowering scent of sticky glue, which may have been "not unpleasant" (to quote Jancis) were it not so overwhelming. Thankfully it blew off to some extent by the second night, to be replaced by a layer of candied vanilla in addition to the aforementioned nose. In the mouth, red fruit and cassis, with lots of candy and licorice, and a little spice and chocolate. Fairly strong and dusty tannins. For now, medium finish at best. Very apparently grenache dominant, and painfully young. May be a good idea to pair with a rich meat dish, or better yet, revisit after half a dozen years.

Pretty bouquet of violets and lavender, coco dust, figs, sage brush, plums and melted licorice. The palate was younger than the nose with some decent tannins and was a big dose of black licorice. Opened up over 3+hour decant and was nice pairing with bone in smoked prime rib.

Compared to the Chapelle St Theodoric wines of the same vintage, this wine is already finely integrated, with perfume and palate all of a piece.
The Charvin also is fruit forward, knitted together with a light application of the finest oak. There is a seductive perfume of fresh red raspberries mixed with raspberry preserves, sandalwood, supported by rain liberated earth scents and baby mushrooms. The mouth is in accord with that perfume and has a Cote de Nuits suppleness and texture, with depth and noticeable length. 94-97

Delicious bottle. Medium ruby, with a nose showing cassis sorbet and beeswax, garrigue. Fruit is just barely sweet, good acidity, long mineral finish.
A previous bottle had a brett problem. No issue here!
