  • From 750ml. AP #21. This has been open for hours and not cold. Spicy and kumquats and horseradish on the nose. Some apricots. Almost molasses. Smoky and apricot and spicy on the palate - more grippy and explosive. Smoky and sweet and spicy on the finish. So good. Thanks Zak! Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5/20.

  • Beautiful and complex wine. The cork disintegrated as I opened it. Almost orange in color. A lovely combination of stone fruits, vanilla and spices.

  • Day 3. I took this to Riesling study #5 on Sunday and brought a bit home. Now I can focus on it. Lovely nose of apricots, kumquats, some peach, some smoke and bacon, chili peppers, candied orange peel. Paprika. Very piquant. The palate is lovely. Not really a dessert wine anymore but fragrant and complex with spices, apricot, mandarin, florals and a bit of honey and chili peppers. It's elegant and perfumed, with superb lift and cut but somehow gentle as well. The finish shows chilis, apricots and some stones. Really lovely. Nose - 5-5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17-17.5/20.

  • Lunch at Sun Wah (Chicago, IL): #21-91, 11% abv. Who ever heard of an 11% auslese? That HGS guy really knows what he's doing though. The nose for me is a little better than palate; showing a slight hint of petrol, but also a lovely mix of dried fruits ranging from apricots to figs. Not quite as complex on the palate, with a slight black tea tone here, coupled with some apricots. Correct acidity to balance the opulent sweetness. A slight bit of funk on the palate as well, but that's probably just an age thing.

  • The cork was intact with little ullage. The color is a wonderful gold. The bouquet consist of ripe apricots. On the palate there are flavor of ripe fruits, with medium to long flavors with great balance.

  • Rieslingfeier 2015 Main Event (The Wythe Hotel, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY): My bottle. Oxidized nose - smoked, dried, nutty. Better on the palate but still somewhat tired - apricots, citrus, nuts, burnt - ok. Orange peel and apricot finish. Nose - 4/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15/20.

  • Dinner at Browntrout (Browntrout, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is so succulent and flowing with peaches, lychees, caramel, pears, green apples, floral notes, and some petrol. There is gorgeous depth and layering to the nose. This shows off maturity, but it is far from falling off as there is a balanced freshness too.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity. There is a delicious fatness to the feel with peaches, lychees, some petrol, caramel, pears, and some green apples. There is still a real zip to the acidity to where it provides a nice spine and base.

Overall: This was fantastic. This is the kind of Riesling I would love to spend a lot of time with and let it fully reveal itself.

  • Dinner at Browntrout (Browntrout - Chicago, IL): One of the finer rieslings I've had. The aromatics were just off the charts...lychee, petrol, apple, petrichor, pears, and slate. So so good. The palate was just in the perfect place. Perfectly sweet, lots of acidity, and just endless layers of florals made this hard to put down. Easily the WOTN.

  • Dinner in Chicago with new friends (Browntrout (Chicago, Il)): My bottle. Medium orange. The nose is quite mature showing dried peach-apricot, a creamy texture, exotic spices: tea, curry and maybe a little galanga? It is quite perfumed and light. Very poised with an energetic leanness. The palate is similar - not as sweet or rich as I was expecting, with dried apricot and peach fruit, serious spice, tea and orange peel. Serious acidity. The palate went back and forth for me: some sips were poised and beautiful, a few others lacked a bit of oompf.

  • Dinner at Browntrout (Chicago, IL): Man, "that old guy" at Müller-Catoir really nailed this one on the head. This is peach and lychee on the nose, with just enough diesel to keep things interesting. There's so much happening on the palate that it's futile to describe. Interestingly, I detected a bit of an earthy funk to this bottle. Neat. Perhaps a bit drier than I'd have expected for an auslese (likely a function of time) this has plenty more room to go, and the only way is up.

  • Rich yellow gold. Honeyed marzipan, ripe stone fruit nose. Perfectly balanced acidity keeps the sweet fruit from cloying. Plenty of tertiaries - brown sugar, Lipton tea, limeade, roasted hazelnuts, talc and baking spices, this is almost liqeuer-like in its sweetness and depth. (I like Seth's call on 'nutmeg' - right on.) Fantastic length - I can taste this two minutes after my last sip. More lower register in its deliciousness as per the Pfalz, this is a masterpiece from the genius of Hans-Gunther Schwarz. The word "legend" is overused, so let's just say "a testimony to his legacy." 95pts pure quality, 97pts personal preference.

  • 2010 Northern Rhones (+treats) at Ross' place: My bottle, and this one had been around the block - another meh showing: that's 1 great to 2 meh. Dried on the nose with peach, petrol and mature notes. Some spice on the palate with dried and bacon aspects and peach. Good but not great. Soundly in the 15-15.5/20 range.

  • Dark gold color. Incredibly intense nose of peaches, oranges, apricots, with a slight grassy/herbal nuance and a certain river meadowy quality that I have trouble describing but that I find frequently in good riesling. In the mouth the fruit is concentrated and intense, just slightly sweet now, and there's a touch of botrytis but it doesn't stick out or overpower the wine, and the acidity is there but also well-integrated. The whole package is powerful and just seamless, and the finish goes on and on. Impossible to stop drinking it. Insanely good and paired with seared foie gras it was truly spectacular.

  • AP #21. Purchased recently at auction from WineGavel.com. Appearance: medium-deep golden color Nose: Very assertive. Great nose - no petrol, lots of red apples and honey. baked apples, white grapes. very sweet - spicy as well. Clearly botrytis - nutmeg, cinnamon and a touch of cayenne. Some stone/mineral in the back, blends w the spices. Really has everything. Complex and 3-D. Palate: Great entry - lots of honey and fruit and stones. A slight feel of heat and over-ripeness. Excellent balance- full and rich but serious acidity. Not racy, but lively and the acid comes on nicely, not quite waves in the end-middle and into the finish which is honey and lime. the finish shows a little heat (the wine is 11% alcohol) Nose: 6/6, Palate: 5/6, Finish: 5/6, Je ne sais quoi (wild card): 2/2 = 18/20 = 95/100.
