paling red with age on the rim, supple leather and barnyard on the nose, soft cherries and bramble, on the palate penetrating in depth while maintaining a light and deft feel, clear mineral notes, genteel fruit and leather, fine long calming finish, lovely savory notes with time, ready to drink and I would drink sooner than later.

Musar is special for lots of reasons and the variation in bottles and vintages is part of the game. This bottle was incredibly clean. I don't know if I would have guessed Musar blind but it certainly is very representative of what this winery is capable of producing and the fact that it's over 40 years old is absolutely incredible.

This was shared with me last night. Gotta say, for a 40 year old, this neither smells nor tastes like it. The freshness on this wine was remarkable, the fruit alive and present. And from what I recall, I sensed nothing that indicated aged features. Said another way, if this was served to me blind, I would not think a 40 year old was in front me. Hell, maybe not even a 10 year old wine. Very very good. Thanks to Counselor Seiber for bringing this to dinner last night.

(Dinner at home, on a Sunday) An intense and provocative wine. Highly enjoyable, needs to be surrounded by laughter and flirtation. With rose, cedar tree, petrol and musk.
On the nose, there is an strong petrol and musk smell, which on taste bursts into an intense rose surrounded by smouldering ash from cedar trees. The wine dances mercilessly on the tongue. A valiant and ageing gypsy living amongst the cedar trees, romancing at sunset.

A gathering of wine geeks (The Greater Boston Area): This was almost rosé-esque in the glass. The nose smells of a dust-covered, oil-stained cement floor with notes of kirsch, and tobacco. On the palate there's the typical notes of cherry-cough-drop, molasses, raspberry, with a lingering note of wild strawberry and mushrooms...this is just so silky-smooth. This is an excellent wine...but it's just a shadow of the last bottle we had from this vintage. This bottle was sourced and imported through the UK. Once again confirming my beliefs that the bottles that are imported by Broadbent show differently (and usually for the better in my mind).

Ch. Musar Dinner with Marc Hochar (Crown Wine Cellars, 18 Deep Water Bay Drive, Shouson Hill, Hong Kong): Dusky, semi-transparent, plush faded red velvet colour. Nose is....gosh...old velvet drapes in a dusty room, cedar woods, damp fresh pine needles, very pure and fresh......absolutely gorgeous and you could sniff this forever. Palate is similarly alive, so fresh, great acidity then some very complex multi-layered variations on plums with dried cherries, dry Indian powdered spices, fresh ripe figs,.....etc. etc... too many elements to identify. Very resonant and reverberant on the finish. Super and still has a long life ahead of it.

From Art's cellar and we waited too long on this one. Bowl was amber to orange to brown on the rim. Prunes, pepper and barnyard on the nose. Thin and bitter in the mouth. As Dr. McCoy would say: "Jim, he's dead."

Celebrating Doug's Birthday...; 11/8/2015-11/9/2015: Color: Deep ruby core with bricking leading to an amber hue and clear meniscus Smell: Sweet nose of potpourri, clove, cement, hints of wild-fermented beers, figs, and a melange of dried red fruits. Taste: cranberries, wild strawberries, orange rind, clove, with a lingering not of brown sugar. Overall: Classic Musar...just in a beautiful spot. Light medium body, medium acidity, medium fruit, with a long finish. This is all elegance and poise that flutters across the palate like silk on a cool fall breeze. This is why Musar should be aged...

Opened this 35 year old bottle that had been in my cellar for 30 years. Decanted twice starting 5 hours before drinking. Pretty empty flavors for first 1-2 hours. Some burnt raisiny notes after 2-3 hours but by 5-6 hours really opened up and was a well rounded wine- all the dinner guests enjoyed.

Five Decades of Chateau Musar....with Serge Hochar (Shanghai Room, Langham Place Hotel, Mongkok, Kowloon, Hong Kong): Tasted blind as one of 12 vintages over 5 decades. Small serving. Transparent, light bricking amber colour. Nose is petrolly, nail varnish.....very Musar-ish. Palate is light acetone, white mushroom and black Chinese mushroom, light mouthfeel....Burgundian....lots of iron filings metallic element but not unpleasant....finishing with a very light, perfumed yet powerful resonance. What a great way to start the line-up. My #5, group's #8.

at the sampler 21 Jan. pale, pinotish colour, ethereal . Xmas cake out of the glass then endless rubber and bacon fat and fruit. delicious. would be great with rabbit stew and polenta. sigh.

I also had this at the Sampler--clearly the 10 days that passed since the last taster posted his note did a number on this wine in the dispenser. The nose showed only soy sauce and VA, and the palate was sour with no fruit left. Time to rotate in a new bottle, guys.

Sampler tasting pour. Wow, this is a great bottle of Moose. Nicely rich, spicey, coffee scented nose. Mmmm, positive attack, lots here, builds nicely across the mid-palate. A warming, rounded finish. A lovely bottle of Moose and so much better than the 80 at the Mohsen Moose masacre a couple of years ago. ****1/2

Musar @ Mohsen (Mohsen, Warwick Road, London): Sweet fruit, slightly spicey, bbq marinade more. A touch of soy and hoisin. Dry, quite full, a hint of sweetness on the finish. Some VA. There is a hint of corkiness but opinion divided. ***

Dusky brown/orange colour. Secondary evolved aromas dominate the nose. Dried fruits and figs. Spice. Quite a sweet palate. Cedary; thick texture. Some sherry notes - a bit hot and tannic. Very good for the age.

Decanted for 18 hours before consuming two bottles over a long, leisurely lunch at Top Deck in Hong Kong. Light tawny and transparent colour. Stunning nose of incense, old cigar boxes, menthol, liquorice and the overall impression of walking through a dark, dusky Greek Orthodox church. You could sniff this forever. Gorgeous light but deep palate full of mouthfilling sweetness remniscent of red turkish delight mixed with incense, deep red and black fruits, plump raisins, rich tinned prunes, touches of moist Christmas cake, cedar wood and attractively balancing acidity. Huge length which resonates inside your head for a very long time. Stunning and quite like nothing else. This blew everyone away.

An Afternoon with Serge Hochar, Ch. Musar, China Club, Hong Kong: Dusky, quite faded but still quite deep colour. Stinky nose which was all about the cork and not the wine because it had only been opened an hour beforehand. Lovely dried berries, nuts and other dried fruits on the palate. Complex. Multi-dimensional. Sweet and touches of Madiera but still lots of tannic structure. Still lots of life in it. Keeps opening up with more time......more and more "in your head" characteristics.....more and more complexity. This would have been better if it had had more time to settle after its travels and if it had been opened longer in advance.

Probably the first time I have had the 1980 for over fifteen years. Browning, but only slightly faded, and very much alive. Not as pongy as Musar can be. I still love these.
