Cassis, raspberry, cigar box, sweet tobacco, ash. Medium-full body. Medium tannins. Went well with steak. At or near peak but should stay there for 4+ more years.

Return to Napa; 3/6/2022-3/13/2022 (Wineries and various restaurants): 94% CS, 3% PV, 3% Merlot. This label was created ostensibly to have a wine that is more approachable and for younger drinking than the main event (the Cabernet). Perhaps although this still strikes me as a wine that can be laid down for a reasonable amount of time and would benefit from it. This is again old school in style. Young even with 10 years of age. Drank next to the 2016 and it's a bit interesting - I'm not sure this isn't the wine you'd pop tonight, but somehow it feels like while a great wine you can see all of it and maybe even the eventual path where the 2016 had a bit more mystique.

Tasted in a vertical with the 2010 and 2011. Cassis, blackberry, cigar box, spice, charcoal. Medium-full body. Medium-light, chalky tannins. Might not yet have peaked, but close if it hasn't.

1st of 2 bottles recently purchased from the winery cellar during a visit. Plum, rich cassis, blackberry compote, and menthol alongside earthy notes or peppers and soil. Velvety on the palate, with superb viscosity and extraction, especially for a "2nd label" wine. Drinking beautifully now through 2025+.

Seavey Tasting in the Vineyard: Compared to the '05, I think the mid-weight 2012 Caravina is drinking better despite its youth. Additional time in cellar will soften the taut tannins and further contribute to an already dense but not overly glycerol texture. Cassis, cherry, blackberry, and cocoa present today; additional spice and herbs visible just past the horizon. For those interested: 94% cabernet, 3% petit verdot, 3% merlot, and 14.5% ABV.

Drinking better than the last time I had this vintage. Cassis, black brambly fruit, tobacco, plums, baking spice; energetic...like a spark plug. Lots of acid and tannin. I adore these wines. Best on Day 2.

Still quite primary, even after a 3 hour decant. Tannins predominate, with ample fruit--I am not worried that the fruit will outlast the tannins. Seavey requires the patience of Job...I am sure that secondary characteristics will emerge in this wine in 3-4 years. I am not sure where RP gets his drinking window as I find even their second wine requires at least 10 years. I drank both their cab and caravina at the vineyard in 2015 and bought mostly the Caravina. Their 2012 cab (which I usually buy) will be classic, but will likely require 20 years to be at a peak. I am going to try my next 2012 Caravina in 2-3 years. It will easily last into the mid-2030's. Even their Caravina might ultimately merit a mid-90's score at its peak

I didn’t take notes on this as we drank over Christmas dinner, but this wine was phenomenal. The power and concentration were incredible. The perfume from the decanter filled the room and from the first sip the only thing I could think of was how concrentrated and intense the flavors were without being overbearing. The tannins are perfectly integrated and is in prime drinking right now. This is an amazing Napa cab that I will happily drink again.
Good, but a hard act to follow, after the 2012 Rudius Knockmore Cabernet enjoyed earlier. Seems to me to be pretty ordinary without much in the way of differentiation; nothing about this stands out to me.

Lovely and flavorful, even though the tannins at the back end still need to be resolved. Cocoa nibs, espresso, cassis, black plums and mossy notes throughout. Wonderful texture. A one-hour decant helped; three hours would have been even better. Worth twice what we paid for this. Proof again that Seavey Cabs deserve plenty of shelf space in the cellar. Outstanding.

I slowed ox for 2 hrs and then poured via a Venturi. I would recommend a 2-3 hr decant instead of my method.
The nose is full of red fruit, leather, coffee grinds, hints of leather and oak. The palate is round with a punch of black cherries on the attack, followed by a good dose of red licorice, tobacco, and some dark chocolate. This wine is pretty balanced and getting better. Drying but not harsh tannins dominate the finish but it is still very good! I'm actually pissed that I wasted two bottles before drinking it the way it is supposed to on the 3rd and now I'm out
Pop the cork and enjoy!! If you have multiple bottle it will be interesting to see how this wine develops over the next 5-8 years.
Much better than the last time I tasted this wine. It is begging to hit its stride.
Slow Ox for 2 hrs at 63 degrees. The wine is medium dark ruby with mid/full body appearance. Dark cherries, raspberries and currants with aditional aromas of rose petals and some earthy elements and hints of alcohol.
The palate is smooth with red fruit, red licorice and oak elements on the attack with a round mid palate and a long finish with a slightly tart flavor.
The tannins, fruit and acid were nicely balanced, but the heat from the alcohol dominated the back palate and part of the finish.
On Day 2 the wine had become better integrated, the heat from the alcohol had fully disipated but the wine had lost some of its liveliness and tension making it smoother but less interesting.
IMO, this wine has just started to hit stride give it another 6-12 months and it should be singing with potential to gain a couple more points.

I know that the Seavey Estate Cab needs time before fully enjoying the wine, but never thought the Carabina would be made in the same fashion.
The first day after a 4hr slow Ox, it was so closed up and astringent, that after 1 glass decided to mount it away until the next day.
On day two it was much improved.
Dark ruby on the glass with medium/full body appearance. Dark cherry, raspberry spices and hints of new leather on the nose. Texturally this is a really good wine with red fruit, tobacco and hints of cedar on the palate. The acidity level was pretty high and even on day two the tannins were grippy.
Not rating this wine yet; hopefully 6 aditional months in bottle will this wine integrate.
Seavey' are pretty much powerful love me or not wines that need aging- Could not wait - lots there but not too appealing right now - and I knew better - will wait a few years for the rest. Should be another great one
Rating withheld, but maybe a 90. Closed so tight. Giving very little. Saved half in a screw-cap 375, retried 2 nights later. Still closed tight. The only "opening" I got was when I accidentally inhaled some into my trachea, coughed, and voila, there is some nice stuff going on in there! Sorry for the weird, not particularly helpful note, but I noted other earlier tastes indicating an open wine, but I don't think so. At least no longer. I have reached a conclusion that much like the big brother Seavey Estate, that these need patience, a lot of time to really come around. I have never been a big fan of Caravina, but love the estate, but I think I just open them up too early expecting a "second wine" experience.

I have been far from enamoured with Napa Cabs from the 2012 vintage. In general, I have found them to be very uni-dimensional....big on the fruit, but low on the structure and acidity. Although tasty, and definitely "crowd pleasers", they seem to be made in a "drink now" style. This wine, as seems typical of the vintage, shows lots of upfront primary fruits: black currant, blackberry, dark cherry, and vanilla. There is little in the way of complexity, or very little structure and acidity. Tasty, and a bit over done, but light on the finish. Time will tell on these.....

Club pick from Groezingers. A little more "old school" than most Napa Cabs. Decent fruit but also a little woodiness (maybe pencil shavings? Cedar?). Not a big fruit wine, and not really my style, but pleasant enough and will please some. Not bad for the price point, but not exceptional. I think I would prefer Cabs from other Cali regions if I want to push down the price (or get the club member pricing for some of the bottlings from places like Hall or Kuleto!)

A second wine that tastes like a second wine: appealing, but straightforward. Dark red in color, medium in body, nose of pencil shavings, tree bark, and boysenberry. Mild tastes of sweet cherry, olive, licorice, and cedar, with a pleasantly grainy finish. 14.5% alcohol. Blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot.
Paying $60 from the winery, I expect a bit more concentration and depth, but this still offers a decent, if unexciting, drinking experience, especially for those inclined towards more savory, yet still oaky, CA Cabernets. In my mind, though, this doesn't even approach other "super seconds" like Blankiet's Price of Hearts, Blackbird's Arise, or Dominus's Napanook, which offer more power and character at a similar price point.

Pop-n-pour then consumed over the next 24. Probably the most approachable Seavey cab I've ever tasted. (Somewhat) light and fruity, not a tannin bomb at all. A nice alternative to a heavier cab, very enjoyable. Good wine at this price point. I will buy more.

The wine looks garnet colored. It smells like black currant (cassis), blackberry, forest floor, lead pencil, and cinnamon. It tastes like black currant (cassis), plum, and licorice. The body is medium/full. The wine has satin-like texture and round mouth feel. The wine finishes medium. This is very enjoyable now with a 2-3 hour decant, and should improve in a year or two. Moreover, the wine represents excellent value.

Enjoyed w seared tuna and avocado. Much lighter body than expected. Tannins not as intense as one would hope for an age worthy Cali cab. Great bright red fruit opened up over the course of the waning summer evening.....

A few months and a slightly longer (and more aggressive) decant have helped tame the oak in this wine immensely, resulting in much better balance to the mostly red fruit core. I stand by earlier comments about value and I'm still not convinced this is a long term ager, but it's a solid, well made wine for drinking now.

This is going to need some time for the oak to settle down and even then, I'm not sure how well it will integrate. That said, even accounting for the over aggressive oak treatment, I found this to be reasonably solid, if not the greatest value.

Not a big fruit wine, and not really my style, but pleasant enough and will please some. Not bad for the price point, but not exceptional.
