  • 1986 Château Cos d'Estournel

3 hour decant. Agree that this had a brambly, barnyard nose that was a little off-putting for me (and I like that characteristic). However, despite the decant, within an hour that had dissipated and the secondary and tertiary flavors of the wine came forth with the structure and formidable backbone of the 1986 vintage. Definitely old style bordeaux, and a wine that forces you to stop and think while you drink it. I enjoyed the bottle, but I think the Pauillac's from 86 that I have had have shown better. I don't think it will improve, but likely has several years at this plateau.

  • 2009 Château Montrose

Four hour double decant, but this wine was still very tight for me. I was struggling to get primary fruit here let alone some of the secondary characteristics some have described. It certainly has all the structure to be a great wine, but I am not touching another bottle until 2030 at the earliest. Did not have with food, which might have softened the tannins. Bought on release.

  • 1999 Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

I bought this on auction after trying a bottle from the same lot from a member of our wine tasting group. It may even be direct from the vineyard, but it was well preserved with no seepage. I loved this wine with pot roast..resolved tannins, wonderful tertiary flavors with still some mild hints of blackberry. I would have definitely called this older bordeaux on a blind tasting. 2h slo-ox prior to drinking. Unfortunately, my last bottle of four, all of which were exceptional for the price.
