  • Dark Amber in hue, this takes a few mouthfuls to give up it's jewels and what jewels they are.
Hazelnut comes and goes, orange peel too, whilst a reticent caramel remains always, subtle yet enduring.
A plethora of tastes, no not tastes, a plethora of feelings.
A log fire in winter. Burnt wood. Fresh spring tides. Summer and sand. Maybe autumn and leaves and the last vestiges of warmth before the weather turns. All kinds going on!
This is not an unyielding wine. It has so much to it but it keeps giving way and letting all of its various splendours have their moments. It let's you pick your focus in any given mouthful. It offers everything up and allows you to choose the direction you head off in.
There is freshness and salinity allied to a nutty, complex depth. This is an unbelievably good wine and an absolute pleasure to sit and slowly sip.

  • Deep amber in the glass. Nose is full-on explosive, with that rancio note coming in strong, but complemented by lightly toasted nuts, seaweed, some hints of caramel. Palate is rounded, full. Lots of intensity coming from all angles - a bit of fruit, bit of salinity. Expressive of its style and so well done.

  • Fira Dismavi 2023 #2 (Sherry); 3/1/2023-3/14/2023: The wine looks light brown colored. The legs are medium. It smells like mineral, stoniness, toast, almond, hazelnut, walnut, soy sauce, sherry and leesy. The body is light/medium. The wine has linear texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has high acidity. Outstanding wine, very complex.

  • Perfect. Depending on the bottle, it can be just the tiniest bit thin. But otherwise, from yuzu and dried fruits, through chocolate and nuts, through various salts and beautiful acidity, onto an endless finish, it's perfect

  • Bodegas Tradicion et al. (Chicago, IL): 0934/1200 L1/20. This was my favourite of the three VORS bottlings tonight. It is a very intense wine, with lots of rancio, citrus peel, roasted nuts, and caramel notes on the nose and palate. A thick, oily texture, this has a tangerine note to the acidity, and a subtle salinity on the back end. Not quite as elegant and filigreed as the Palo Cortado or Oloroso, this is a massively scaled wine.

  • This is quite similar to the last time I had this a few months ago -- there is a prevalent sense of rancio about this wine that is just lovely. This doesn't feel like it has anywhere as high the level of alcohol it does; wonderfully weighted between the acidity, nuttiness, and salinity. Plenty of citrus peel character as well. Delicious.

  • Served in a JRxRB universal. Flower / 1009 hPa.

Clear, shiny amber. A truly wonderful nose with orange peel, toasted bread, amaretto, sawdust, mild tobacco, butterscotch, and rancio. An intense salinity and lightly bitter resin on the palate. The acidity is off the charts, and when match with a lightly slick and oily texture, helps balance the alcohol. Bone dry as they come, the intensity of flavor still carries for a few minutes after every sip. Truly world class sherry.

  • Searingly dry, so not for the faint hearted, but then again this is Sherry. What is nice about this bottle is there there is abundance of aromatic complexity with lots tobacco, almond, nutmeg, orange peel and toast. Very long finish. Not a Sherry fan, this is was nice, as long as you can handle the dryness.

  • -- tasted non-blind over multiple days --

Rich, nutty Nose. Of the two Grassl glasses I tried this out of, it showed better from Mineralite than Liberte. Medium amber color. Typical high-toned Sherry Nose, with some orange blossom. Very intense on the palate, with lightly toasted almonds, a moderate tawny note, and intense lemon/acidic aspect. I cannot emphasize enough how incredibly *intense* this Amontillado shows. The finish goes on and on and on and .... I had planned to drink this over the course of a month, but it is just so incredibly delicious I killed the entire bottle by myself in a matter of about 5 days. Superlative! Buy if you can find it. Gut impression score: mid to high 90s.

  • Spanish pot luck (Chicago, IL): I have to admit I was surprised by how much I liked this. First off, the nose on this is awesome -- so much rancio, some orange peel, brown spice, and all that good stuff. The palate is classic sherry, with its saline and nuttiness. There's a slight oiliness that works really well with the acidity and higher alcohol here. Very good complexity and concentration here.

  • This wine is a deep amber in color. This is of a pronounced intensity of aroma with characteristics of toffee, honey, hazelnut, almond, vanilla, coffee, peach, dried date, bread dough, brioche, butterscotch, smoke, walnut, and resinous. This wine is fully developed. This wine is dry with high acidity, medium tannin, high alcohol, a full body, a pronounced intensity of flavor, and a long finish. Flavor characteristics include almond, hazelnut, vanilla, coffee, brioche, butterscotch, nutmeg, and savory. Overall, this wine is of outstanding quality and should be drunk now; not suitable for further aging.

  • Almonds, honey, varnish on the nose. Tremendous salinity and very clean on the palate. Paired beautifully with an aged cheddar, adding layers of complexity to the cheese and the wine. Tremendous.

  • Dark amber golden colour. The first impression on the nose is citrus fruits and caramel. Salty, brilliantly acidic and yet with sweet undertones. Long finish that keeps a roasted nut flavour alive. A wonderful wine

  • Demanding Sherry! I have had this bottle open for a couple of weeks and trying to dissect everything from it has been a challenge. Very effusive, Molasses, toffee and oak influences with toasted caramel, peanut brittle, exotic blood orange and fig fruits, various brown spices, vanilla etc. The palate is ultra high acid with an almost citrus-like quality to the aged fruit. Long and tense with more energy than you would imagine based on the nose. Very stylish and very "extra" for Amontillado.

  • A traditionalist Amontillado. The average age of the wine is 32 years, 19,5% alcohol, 7,4 g/l acidity and 1,01 g/l volatile acidity. Bottle no. 1696 of total 3000 bottles.

Deep, mahogany-orange color with a burnished golden rim. Complex and bold nose with remarkable freshness and clarity for an old Sherry. Quite sweet aromas of syrup and lifted nail polish character, some maple syrup, a little bit of raisiny dark fruit, a hint of Russian candy and a touch of mushroom. The wine is full-bodied, oily and extremely pungent with pronounced acetaldehyde character and very concentrated flavors of green almonds, aldehydic salinity, apple peel bitterness, some salted nuts, a little bit of sweet caramel and applesauce, light volatile notes of nail polish, a hint of cigar and a touch of hay. The wine is very high in acidity for a Sherry, making it feel remarkably playful and light on its feet - especially taking the concentration into account. The finish is sharp and pungent with very long flavors of caramel, intense aldehydic salinity, some salted nuts, a little bit of mushroomy biological aging character, a hint of nutty rancio and a touch of porcini.

A very intense, complex and honestly rather unapologetic Amontillado with remarkably intense and very pungent aldehydic character and exceptional depth of flavor. Superb stuff for the Sherry connoisseurs - might be too sharp and briny for uninitiated. Extraordinary stuff. Delivers for the price at ~60€.

  • Glorious and delicious, with layer upon layer of flavor: toasted nuts, dried fruit, brown butter, salt water, and old furniture. Shimmers with tang and brine.

  • Andalucia, mainly Sherry (Tradicion/Lustau/Barbadillo); 9/12/2018-9/26/2018 (Malaga-Cordoba-Carmona-Arcos-Jerez): Tasted at the bodega. Dark yellow to amber colour. The nose is a mixture of caramel and finest ancient verdelho Madeira, indeed it smells sweet. Astonishing salty, vibrantly acidic, bone-dry entry sets of a flood of salivation —this is literally mouthwatering stuff. Intense salted almond-led mid-palate, fiercely dry yet juicy at once, with even more acidic gain to the long, multi-dimensional finish. Fantastic wine. 59 Euro/75cl at cellar door. 94+P

  • Lovely wine, almost sweet roasted nuts on the nose with a salty, aldehyde, carmelly thing going on; soft and smooth on the palate, butterscotch, lots going on, perfectly smooth mouthfeel, viscous but not thick or heavy. Really good with goat Brie!

  • The nose is rich and deep, with elements of candied quince and savoury saline conveying a sort of sweet/sour impression. There is classic rancio too but not in lashings. In the background a whiff of old mahogany.

In the mouth this bursts with life. Incredibly, searingly intense. Almost unbearably so on first opening but it settles with a little air. Vibrant, sea like acidity puckers the mouth. The finish lingers long after you swallow, showing a delicious nuttiness.

  • An amazing Amontillado that I have tasted many times over the years. Make sure to book a visit I You visit Jerez. A fairly new bodega started less than twenty years ago. As the name - Tradition - states, every thing is done "a mano" - manually. Refreshing, bottling, labeling - You name it. All their wines (except the Fino) are VOS/VORS and very intense.
And their product range is impressive:
A good Fino that were released for the first time in 2013.
An Amontilado, Palo Cortado and Oloroso that is to die for.
A Cream that were released first time only a few years ago, and one of the best.
A PX that is very good and two brandies. One is good, and good value and their best is outstanding.
For me this is without a doubt one of the finest bodegas.

  • Monday Night Blinds (Home (Noe st)): (blind)
    White wine
    Rich amber color.
    Nose:
    - Nuttiness from oxidation:
    - Has a bit of curry/cracker (flor?)
    - Smells a bit sweet/raisinated
    Palate:
    - rice pilaf, golden raisin complexity (slight raisination and flor/voile)
    - slight nuttiness
    - slight RS - 5-10g
    - feels 17% alcohol (actually 19.5%)
    - curry carrot and golden raisin on the finish

    Conclusion:
This has sweetness, oxidation, and flor, and clocks in at higher than 15% alcohol.
    - Amontillado sherry (has oxidation and flor and higher alcohol).
Not sure what else this could be.

    This is a phenomenal example!

  • A private lunch (Restaurant Fera *, Hotel Claridge's, London, UK): Amber gold shot with orange; intense and very dry but has the glycerin to avoid being acidic or austere; not too woody either, nuts and candied fruit, hint of sour butter, rich and smoky, even a floral note; really powerful on the palate, concentrated flavours; dry but rich finish, salty, leathery notes, excellent length.
