This wine surprised me considerably. Before opening, I worried it might be over the hill—tired at the very least—but it was far from either. Even at twenty-six years old it had barely begun to develop tertiary characteristics. The nose showed red and black cherry, strawberry, licorice, all spice, and sweet herbs. There was just a hint of what I take to be forest floor. The palate was similarly exuberant—red fruit and spice with good depth and concentration. The wine certainly didn’t feel like it was a quarter of a century old.
The acid was strong, as were the tannins. In fact, if I had more, I would wait a few years before trying it again to see if the tannins recede at all.
I bought this bottle thinking it was a chance to taste aged grand cru Burgundy. I can see why writers like Meadows and Gilman suggest waiting so long—

Fairly classic Vougeot (meaning down-the-middle Burgundy) and shows like its from a classic vintage. Grand Cru levels of concentration with good Gevery-like meat and plenty of spice. At peak.

Jadot Bonnes Mares and Gevrey CSJ 96/97/02/03 + (Hughes House - Chicago IL): Mature cherry on nose and palate, more red vs black fruited, with earth and faint savory spice. Lots here, very nuanced. Very good weight and balance. Much better vs my previous bottle from the same case that opened late last year.

Medium to Deep ruby color not showing any age. Nose is powerful and intense, preparing for the taste to come. Mature, forest bush, cherry liqueur, coffee, iron. In the mouth, this is medium body, ripe black Cherry and black berries. Medium acidity that is hardly noticed in the middle of the soft and ripe black fruits. Very soft and mellow. Mature, at the same time with all its primary fruit. Excellent length. Wonderful wine.

Lucien Le Moine Tasting (My home - Chicago IL): Served blind to the group, telling them it was Grand Cru. Mature red cherry on nose and palate with earth and baking spice. Very good weight and balance. Best of the 4 bottles I've opened from this 1/2 case purchased a few years ago.

This seems to be drinking at its peak; nice combination of boisterous fruit and savory aged notes. Hints of baking spices, moist forest floor and just a whiff of smoke. Resolved structure and a silky finish. Wonderful showing for this perfectly stored bottle.

Opened an hour before tasting. Mostly black cherry on nose and palate with plenty of baking spice and some forest floor hints. Good density throughout with everything nicely resolved and integrated. Best to enjoy over the next 5ish years.
Served in what turned out to be an 02/02/97/92 vertical, but it was a virtual Covid-19 vertical, so just this TN.

Broad array of mature black and red cherry with woodsy spice, earth and mushroom that comes across as slightly dirty... but in the good sort of way that I like. In its peak drinking window, best to enjoy in the next 5 years.

Open one hour before serving. Black and red cherry with mushroom and savory spice. Everything well balanced, good+ length, Grand Cru density. Doubt there is any further upside from here, very good now.

We popped this one hour in advance and 10 years too early. Zero tertiaries. This is still pure fruit. Good concentration, good extract and balanced grip but this still needs to shed some baby fat. This surprised me so much that I'm questioning if my cellar temperature is too low. This wine is twenty-one years old. At least give me some mushroom notes!

Jadot 1997 Dinner: A Jacques Lardière Miracle (RPM Steak - Chicago IL): Open 3 hours before serving in single blind flight. Combination of red and black cherry with subtle background spice, all nicely mature. Probably better if given less air before serving, but still very balanced and enjoyable.

Open 30-45 minutes before serving. Lots spice with nicely mature red fruit with some hints of dried berry and cooked mushroom to start. Very good concentration. Mushroom and earthy notes became more pronounced after open 90 minutes. Another very successful Jadot 1997, but I will be drinking my remaining bottles over the next five years.

Deep crimson color; surprisingly unevolved and deep fruited; some only modest secondary character. Rich, slightly poopy with a touch of the shoe polish thing (nitro benzene) I love in rich burgundy wines. Much life ahead.

Some Wines from a Spring Trip to France; 4/4/2015-4/11/2015 (Paris and Burgundy): Freakishly primary deep ruby. Meaty, masculine, strapping black fruit and anise with a significant tannic burden to resolve. A youthful, typical Clos Vougeot. I would dare anyone to identify this blind as coming from a vintage with a weak, insipid reputation.

Decanted for about an hour before dinner; Nose features concentrated flavors of dark berries, allspice and vanilla, while the palate is reflective of the vintage with plenty of concentrated red and dark fruits underpinned by some sous bois and spice; Still plenty of tannic structure left in this wine, so no rush here

This wine has another decade for those who can wait. It was tight and closed up upon opening. It took a couple hours to really shine.
Nose is dark, with earth tones and spice.
Palate has some tannic grip to it still, dark fruit, good complexity, nice length and good acidity. A well structured wine that could go much longer in the cellar. Not showing much in the way of secondary flavors yet.
Would buy again.

Boysenberry and red cherry aromas with great intensity and plenty of earthy character. Modest spice on both nose and palate. Very long, elegant flavors come through on palate, alos soming mostly red fruit with great earthy, mushroom elements. I haven't had this since shortly after release, and this really showed more balanced and complete vs. around 2001.

A younger and more muscular showing than I was expecting given the vintage. Relatively dark fruited with some meaty and spice notes. Try again in a few years.

This wine followed a 1990 Parent Pommard 1er Cru. It would have been more appropriate to start with this one; bright red, ripe fruit both on the nose and palate. The ripe fruit fades to a rather acidic finish. It's hard to say if the fruit will mature enough to counteract the acid. This wine is a nice drink, and I would buy more if the price was right.
