Deep, relatively dense ruby. Dark red, peppery fruit. Mid weight, peppery with some bite. A little flat perhaps. Still plenty of life in it but lacking the spark of a previous bottle seven years ago. Not sure I’ll work up sufficient enthusiasm to finish this off tomorrow. Decent enough, but… ***

Seymour Wine Club Meeting 4/27/19 (Home of Lew Stanio): Tasted blind. The nose was a bit closed down at first but upon retasting, it had aromas of cherry, smoke and matchstick. Nose kind of was evolving as the night went on. Flavors of cherry, currant, a touch of plum and some earthiness. Ends with a 25 second finish with cherry notes. Once this came around it was drinking pretty well. Was difficult to tell this apart from the Rioja's because it had that similar Spanish earthiness. I gave this wine 92 points and it finished tied for 2nd.

This is indeed an easy drinker with lots of nice dark berries. It does not fully get to the 2011 and 2012 vintage but still very smooth and one of the best wines to the prize...even though it has increased over the last years.

Notes of tart cherry, pomegranate, blackberry, blueberry, baking spices, leather, and a touch of wet stone. Good mouth feel and decently balanced. Good grip without being overblown. Nice, light, lean, acid driven melange of tight red and blue berries mixed with earth and tea. I concur that it feels like it could stand in structure wise for a Cru Beaujolais, though slightly darker fruit profile, perhaps trending toward a Loire Cab Franc on the palate. A great representation of Bierzo and mencia. Raspberry and blueberry on the nose, with floral notes, spice, and stone adding complexity to the rich fruit. The minerality shows through even more on the palate, lending a dark tone to the otherwise light fruit. Smooth texture, refined tannins, and a somewhat bitter finish. Really enjoyable.

Sappy twig, black currant, mineral and char on the nose. Fresh acidity with youthful tannins and an herbaceous, black fruit finish. Not unlike a varietal Cabernet Franc; should improve and unwind over the next couple of years. 3/5

14%, Mencia variety. In short it's like quite a strong, oaky, dry, tannic Pinot Noir. Medium bodied. Needs some decanting. 87+/100 ** On the 3rd day with oxidation it got smoother and a bit more balanced but at the same time it's like a port.
Classic Mencia, with aroma of dark forest fruit, herbs and pepper. The palate follows up with more if the same. And a nice "bite" of pepper in the finish. Very good value. Went very well with barbecue (spare ribs).
Boasting a deep and vibrant ruby appearance the 2013 Petalos del Bierzo is is endowed with an explosive aromatic bouquet mainly in the form of dark berries, chocolate and some hints of vanilla. It has a full bodied and muscular structure, and a fairly moderate finish. Not a wine for those looking for elegance and finesse in the glass, but a very solid Mencia nonetheless. You couldn't really ask for more at that price. To be enjoyed over the next five years.

Solid enjoyable wine at a great price. Nose is consistent with other vintages; cherry, raspberry, blood orange, herbs, stony notes. The palate has lovely vivacity, but also plenty of tannin that bind it up a touch on the back end. I think this is probably 2 years from its prime, but its good now with food.

It's been years since I last had a glass of Mencia. Don't know why, because I like the grape. The smokeyness and the hypothetical blend of cab franc, pinot noir and cool syrah is right in my wheelhouse. This is a very nice bottle at around €20. It needs some time to open up, but shows elegance and grace. Actually the label is very befitting for the wine. Very good and recommended.
One of my father-in-law's "pilgrimage wines" on the Camino de Santiago (he managed to get lost in this vineyard!) Not surprisingly for its Mencia grape, it tastes like a dead ringer for a well-made Loire Cabernet Franc, but smoother and less acidic. Green herbs, eucalyptus and raspberries on the nose. Medium bodied and a smooth, round finish with nice minerality.

Night slipping away, friends seeking a last sip before departing and we know three glasses guaranteed, four likely (no real point in Coravin), but we may not finish. Et voila, this marvellous Mencia offers a fairly easy sipping, earthy, veggie driven drop with pleasant hints of berries. More importantly, at the price, you can afford to use the last glass for cooking...if and only if necessary...which is was not!

This is certainly a good wine. £13 at Majestic makes it good value. But I think the Mencia grape can be so much more elegant than this. There is too much extraction here, and too much oak. I'm sure it is only a tiny fraction of new oak but the wine doesn't appreciate it in my view. I think of a lot of over-worked wines from languedoc, at this level, which get too smokey and clumsy when married with oak when they should really just save themselves some cash and concentrate on the varietal. I would prefer this producer to dial it down a little and let the grape and the soil speak for themselves.

this is a great value that always seems to impress me, explosive floral, dried red fruit and woodsy nose, despite the opaque look, this is a medium-weight red with fantastic texture, smooth edges and bright acidity, one of those ultra balanced wines, this is a sneaky good variety to cellar, when young, these always hold up and taste better over two or three days after opening

Nose: Lots of blueberry and cherry fruit. Gradually also some rich herbs (somewhat in direction of Garrigue). Taste: Blueberry fruitiness held in a rather soft, rounded tannic grip with nice freshness/acidity and "cool fruit" in the finish, followed by spicy, rich herbal elements. Young and promising wine which benefited from some airing and already drinks very well!

First red of Monday Tapas Day at home. Dark cherry red. Aromas and palate of black cherry and liquorice. Medium-bodied, pleasant fruit, acidity and subtle tannins. Nicely balanced. Arguably, the greatest QPR wine we ever have sipped!!!

Work Wine Tasting - Spain (Home): Dark fruit. Spice, pepper, dried flowers; plenty here. Quite deep with punchy dark fruit. A density and seriousness but a florality and joie de vivre too. ****

Very balanced dark fruit, peppery spice, minerals, tannins, and acid. Loads of flavor with a strong finish. Year to year this is a great value with consistent quality.

Ruby. Combination of green herb and fruit aromatics not completely knit. Medium weight. Blueberry, fennel, and soil, average acidity, decent finish. Not exactly sure what to make of this.

Floral and earthy on the nose with notes of red berries and sweet spices. Quite pure and unmasked on the palate, fresh, slightly mineral, round and smooth tannins, nice length. 89-91

Earthy black fruit and a touch of Christmas spice. Medium bodied with good ripe fruit. Lovely mouth feel with a touch of ripe powdery tannin, minerals and great balancing acidity.

Eðalklúbbur, vínsmakk #1 haust 2015 (Stakkhamrar 11): Flottur ilmur, fjólur og þroskaður ostur. Mjög ferskt, líklega ekki ætlað til geymslu. Bragðgott í byrjun en eftir því sem sopum fjölgaði kom fram beiskja í eftirbragði. Strax og ég smakkaði þetta vín þá tengdi ég það við önd. Ég held að þetta vín og önd myndu smellpassa saman.

this is a great value that always seems to impress me, explosive floral, dried red fruit and woodsy nose, despite the opaque look, this is a medium-weight red with fantastic texture, smooth edges and bright acidity, one of those ultra balanced wines, this is a sneaky good variety to cellar, when young, these always hold up and taste better over two or three days after opening

This is a wine that punches above its weight class. An excellent bargain at $17 per bottle. The wine has a velvety texture and a palate of red fruits, earth, and an appealing bitter aftertaste.

Musky scent. light-med body with a lot of flavour. leather, earth, allspice dominates some red berry underneath. very dry finish, turns a bit bitter, but not too much. not a sipper, but a foodwine, atm.I wonder if it just needs aging to mellow down a notch.

Floral aromas leading to a medium-bodied palate of chalky red berry fruit that shows noticeable new oak (baking spice, ginger). The finish shows some ferrous notes with a green edge.
