Marsannay @ Vinotecca (Vinoteca, Smithfield, London): Sour cherry nose. A little disjointed. Slightly weird and astringent. Nose reminds one of industrial loo cleaner. No, coal tar soap emerging. Pretty strongly. Really unpleasant.

Really didn't know what to expect - my first 2004 burgundy. From 375 ml. nose: dust and earth takes center stage. Not funky or barnyardy at all, just a damp earth quality. palate: balanced well between earth, fruit, acid and tannin. Charred earth and very faint spice notes over rhubarb/red fruit mash. I'd prefer this with food over sipping, but there is nothing not tasty about it. How's that for an unnecessary double negative?

From half. Pretty disappointing and angular, overt and unintegrated oak. Not sure what's going on as the last bottle was nice. I would hold for a while.

Dinner AC Gary Rona and gang -- showing pretty lean and mean yet again, real tough love even for the Francophiles. Some tea notes, bright cherry, zesty acidity and some vegetal notes tho.

Started with some sweet cherry fruit that faded quickly, herbs and acid leaning. Balanced and well made, but not a lot of stuffing. A good village wine that would go better with food.
On a different note, paid about the same price as for this wine at the same time for a Barbera d'Asti and a St. Joseph - both wines kicked this wine's ass. This strikes me as a typical outcome for any Pinot in this price range, new world or old.

From half. Really nice lesser burg. Exuberant nose, dark Pinot fruit and cannabis, a bit dusty. In mouth, quite structured but not imposing, open enough, spicy, very good balance. Just fine on its own but I think will sing with the right food. Longish finish. Quality all round. Will age some but just fine now.
I am having no problems with the 04s and think they are completely underrated.

This was drinking nicely. Unlike other tasters I found that the wine gained a lot with aeration.

Coco500--lean yet racy pinot, better with food than standalone
