Mature Barolo. Will hold, but not improve. Drink up! Reticent nose, but a wonderful palate. Dark chocolate and the unmistakable licorice notes are present. Nice finish.

Opened at Otto e Mezzo in HK. Slow-oxed for many hours before being served blind.
This was drinking so nicely! Very grateful for the air, as this was loose, supple and very giving by the time we got to it. Well integrated but not tertiary at all, just a well made and well aged Barolo giving what you're looking for: a beautiful light colour, rose petals, hints of tar and great structure with grip on the palate.
Nothing outstanding, but extremely enjoyable. Thanks to J for the treat, and would be very happy to try again!

Paired with 04 Monprivato. This had several hours of slow-o, and apparently was attractive earlier in the day. By the time we got to it, the oxidation had started to overwhelm the wine. Surprising as you wouldn't expect half a day of slow-o to ruin this wine.

"The stench is dissipating" (Chicago, IL): My string of bad luck with this bottle continues. This bottle was pretty sound on opening, but seemed to deteriorate quickly with air, eventually showing a bit of browning and soy. The palate was better than the nose, but some of those persistent browning flavours were there too.

45th Birthday Celebration (Chez Nanda): PnP. A pure and expressive Nebbiolo. Vibrant with good structure and tension. A glass on day two was even better with more depth and harmony.

"You only turn 45 once" (Chicago, IL): Pop and pour, because I didn't have the time to give this the full oxygen regime, and for me it tends to be one or the other. Beautiful red fruit; this is light but shows ample heft on the palate as well. Beautiful acidity and while this is clearly ready to drink now, there's still plenty of long term potential here.

Some more Sunday wines (Chicago, IL): Initially a little unpleasant on the nose, leading me to worry this may have been slightly corked. Fortunately, that blew off, leading to a very pretty, red-fruited and delicate wine. Despite the lightness, there's concentration and intensity here, and the fruit is still quite generous.

After a couple of hours in a decanter, this is pretty awesome. On first opening, was kinda thin and all menthol. With time, the nose is more in the tar and roses category, but the combination is still menthol-ish only much deeper. Much more bottle sweetness on the palate; tannins too. Result is something delicious now but with some evolution to come. This isn't a huge wine, but should be very good for a very long time- I think the balance, structure, and interest / complexity is there to make it see another 15 years or more.

Alas, popped and poured. Wonderfully floral aromas with red cherry and spice hints. but almost nothing forthcoming on the palate. Needs cellar time and/ or plenty more air.

Fairly dark for a mature Barolo, and with an almost ethereal bouquet of crushed roses, underbrush, and a slight, but pleasant, whiff of petrol. On the palate it is ultra smooth, with the tannins fully resolved, yet retaining a certain precision and nerve that keeps it fresh. Wonderful finish with a host of s condary flavors. This is a somewhat understated wine, and not likely to improve, although it may stay at its present plateau for many years. It will be overwhelmed by vibrant, assertive food. Serve with something simple.

Opened about 8 hours before drinking at our annual truffle dinner at a friend's house. 4 courses with large quantities of Italian whites shaved over the top. Cork dry and slightly crumbly, but came out in 2 pieces. Light cherry red in color. Cherry and earth on the nose. 1 at the table thought it had a cork funk, but the other 5 didn't. Decent palate of cherry, tobacco and earth. Where is the road tar and gasoline from the days of yore? Just ok and simple. Not as good as the Monprivato from this producer.

When decanted at my office about four hours prior to dinner, this was dark, tight and unyielding. By dinner, it showed a much softer exterior and a very deep core of smooth dark fruit, dried herbs and tar. The tannins are not as fierce as expected, and the softness of the palate suggests that this is approachable now, but I intend to hold my remaining bottles at least five more years. Fairway Cafe with the guys.

Tasted double blind. Popped and poured. Started with lots of red cherry and flowers on nose. Same flavors came through on palate with lots of acidity. Interesting, over 30 minutes the wine became less accessible and more tannic. Give this another decade or more.

Opened at home (not decanted) about 4 hours before drinking at local byob. Forgot to open it in the morning. One of the problems of getting older: Me, not the wine. Pretty dark cherry red. Plum, minerals and a floral element on a nice nose. A little tight, but not tannic on the palate. Not fruity, but chalk, minerals, earth, licorice and cedar on a balanced palate. First time trying this wine, although I have drunk many G. Mascarello Monprivatos in the past. I enjoyed this as did my 2 friends at local byob. Lacking road tar and gasoline that I used to like in my barolos, but which I don't find much of anymore. Seemed ready to drink, but either a few more years or a long decant might not hurt.

Astor Wine Fall Tasting of France and Italy: Light ruby with an orange tinge to the rim. This is very shut down now, but what nose there is is quite complex and deep with notes of sweet red fruit and spice. On the palate, loads of tannin. This needs time. Hard to score at this stage.

2001 G. Mascarello Sant Stefano Di Perno – A first hit of rosemary is built apon a bed of spiciness and clay, the cherry and raspberry fruit is a bit stewy at first but freshens up with airing. Medium full in the mouth and front loaded with rich berry fruit that shows a hint of the stewiness that is found on the nose. Chalky and limestone across the bitter-sweet midpalate and full of lush tannins on the finish which has great focus and wonderful spiciness. This bottling has progressively gotten fresher and cleaner each time I’ve tried it and expect it to drink well early and develop very well

Very dried grass notes on the nose, lots of dried herbs, sweet tarriness, spicy nettles with light cherry, perfumed and evolved. Incipient sweetness in the mouth, tons of ripe tannins, great acidity, lovely amarena, rose, and dried citrus peel in the mouth, Brisk and bright with a very long finish with dusty soil tones and a very perfumed and floral finish with treebark and dried rose. Drink 2010-2020
