Light to mid gold. Maturing Riesling nose. Lovely zingy acidity on the attack and forming a spine through to the finish. Some grapefruit pith alongside a sense of something more tropical. A touch of RS. This has slimmed a little since a previous bottle 11 years ago and the weight and acidity have swapped around. Good. ***1/2

Not altogether different than last time. Cork a little crumbly but intact. Has great fruit density, still showing RS but the acid gives it levity. Holding up better than the recent schlossberg that I tried. I am looking forward to further maturity and will wait at least 5yrs to try again.

Salil in town (Chicago, IL): Nose: The nose is giving and fragrant with stone fruits, pears, mineral tones, peaches, white fruits, and some honey notes. There is excellent depth and balance that shows off some of the age, though it is still extremely fresh.
Taste: Medium bodied with high acidity. The acidity is crisp with there being good weight and balance to the feel along with stone fruits, pears, peaches, minerals, mangoes, and some honey.
Overall: This is a lovely Spatlese that is starting to enter into maturity. There is a freshness to the fruit that still shows off some youth to where this feels like it can age for a good amount of time.

Hanging out with Salil; 1/21/2017-1/22/2017 (Chicago, IL): #10-03, 8.5% abv. This is light and airy, but with plenty of density and fruit. Clearly getting towards its secondary stages, but this is in a great spot. A bit of peaches, apples, and pears. The acidity here is very prominent, and there's so much life in this -- it seems like this must have been a very fruity wine in its youth, but time has certainly rounded this out. Solid riesling.

Brief note. Cork perfect. Color gold. This is partly mature, still showing RS with the creamy acids. I really enjoyed this now, but looking forward to it continuing to mature.

Zak and Seth's Excellent wine and leftover wine adventure (Umi Nom (Clinton Hill, Brooklyn)): My bottle. Purchased on release. Nose is so creamy with vanilla, marzipan, almonds, peach, red apple. Very plush on the palate - soft, apple, spice. Acid comes out nicely in the finish with lime, apple and spice. Leitz + 2002 isn't really my ideal combination. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15/20.

Light yellow in color. Airy aromas of yellow pit fruits, petrol, wet stone, herbs and citrus zest. A light and lively palate shows white peaches squeezed with ripe lemons with a whiplash of minerals on the finish. This is just shy of Spatlese weight and the sweetness has receded well into the background. There is still crunchy acidity and a stony spine that keeps it interesting.

Drank at Taste of India in Portchester. Light yellow/gold color. Nose of minerals, stone, petrol and some light peaches. Fairly light bodied, lots of minerals, peaches, perhaps some green apples. A very defined stony quality pervades the wine. Nicely fragrant with a real freshness about it, wonderful acidity nicely balances against the faint sweetness of the fruit. A very pleasant riesling that is perhaps a bit light, but overall a well-made concoction with good complexity. Went great with the spicy Indian food. This wine's got a very long way to go too...

My first foray into Spatlese Riesling. Loved the slight frizante going on, lots of minerals, with good balance. Thought this was really delicious. NR only 'cause I have no comparision yet.

Wow. Rich and light on its feet at the same time. No detailed notes but really fine quality--could use perhaps just a bit more spine but that is a quibble. Will this get better or just less focused with time?

2001 Bordeaux (Lavandou): light on its feet with lovely floral aromas, but the disciplinarian might find it a touch too inviting with more RS than ideal, but hey, I prefer my Riesling on the drier side. Would make a beautiful compliment for S.E. Asian spicy cuisine. Hedonistic. Caveat, this is a narrow view of the wine as I struggle to truly enjoy German Rieslings. The table was far more enthused over it and understandably so!

Pale to mid straw. Obviously riesling on the nose, some sense of ripeness and sweetess but currently a little difuse. Far more focus on the palate, floral, white fruit, some mineral, but just very smoth and moreish. Spatlese weight morre obvious than equivalent sweetness, a touch light on acidity. Very drinkable though and plenty of time in hand. ***

WS Forum South Florida Offline (Bistro Provence, Boca Raton, FL): Intense fruit and sweetness with some tropical notes towards the long finish. A very nice mouthfeel and a delight to drink. The only thing that kept me from scoring higher was I would have liked more acidity.

I echo much of whats reflected in the reviews below and it was superb with a Thai meal. I'd like to add that the strong presence of Pineapple in the fruit profile was just plain irresistable. You can't go wrong with Leitz - I have never been dissapointed.

Fragrant and refeshing aromas ... tangerine, cocoanut, gardenia. Generally lightfooted although a bit heavy/subdued on the backend. Mineral driven, lightly acidic finish that's very long and somewhat tropical. Perfect with our Thai dinner. I prefer a bit more crispness but nice nevertheless. And ... may evolve .

Nice color and nose; I would have preferred a a bit acidity to balance what I thought was a touch too much sugary even for a Spatlese. Was a hit at dinner, however.

Johannes Leitz is one of the rising young stars of the Rheingau and produces a mere 3400 cases total per year. The Gault Millau wine guide rates the estate with 4 out 5 bunches. He owns 5.8 hectares. Terry Theise included him among the Hors Classe in his 2002 portfolio. Johannes takes a reductive approach handling the wine as little as possible and concentrating on cleanliness in the winery. Some of his winemaking practices of note are his use of a pneumatic press and his emphasis on yeast contact. The Roseneck vineyard is extremely steep and a top site in the Rheingau. This wine was clear and very pale straw color. The nose was not as pretty and giving as the 2001 Leitz Spatlese Rudesheimer Berg Schlossberg but was still quite aromatic with apple, white flowers and a slatey minerality. Rich yet light and airy doughy and fruit notes of pear, apple and stones. Not overly sweet and balanced by vibrant acidity. Quite substantial with a tight package. No loose ends here. I tried it over 2 days and it was best on day 1. 93-94 points.
