  • Purchased a few years ago from Wegmans. I was skeptical, but price was reasonable. Label was in pristine condition. Opened last night on OTBN and paired with beef bourguignon.

Agree with many of the previous notes. Opened with an ah-so. Cork was in great shape - firm with staining only at the bottom. Poured into glasses and let it air out for about 30 minutes. Color was excellent with minimal bricking. Nose was very pretty and complex with dried red fruit, floral, used coffee grounds. Palate was rich, silky with sweet dried cherries and balanced by acidity that went beautifully with the food. This is the best old Burgundy I’ve had.

  • A Burgundy Paulée with the Chevaliers du Tastevin (Hooked Market & Kitchen, Latham, NY): A hint candied red fruit in a nose of tar and rotting mulch. Mouth is similar. RIP NR

  • Significant bricking really rust colored. Very ripe plum with a fig note. Definitely still has life. It’s what you imagine very old burgundy to be. Was very much enhanced by food. Started with some triple creme Brie and then chicken with a burgundy mushroom sauce. Used a umami spice which brought it all together. Don’t think this is a stand alone wine. Recorked and brand new label.

  • Unlike other bottles which have shown very youthful for the vintage, this shows a dominant tertiary profile, initially showing some lactic/milky aromas that break away to toffee/caramel, sweet spices, woodsmoke, cedar chest and chocolate. Supple, rounded palate with beef stock/umami richness in the mouth, coated tannins and notable sweetness. This had a new cork.

  • I have been lucky to have tried this a handful of times and this bottle was quite on point; marvelous smoky sous bois complexity with Worcestershire sauce, tobacco smoke, caramel, a note of espresso over hallmark soil tones, aging red fruit and beetroot highlights. Supple, fat but defined. In a marvelous place and this is one of the reconditioned bottles that has shown so well (consistently) over the last few years. Delicious umami/blood/beef stock texture and complexity. Rich, well-structured and intense yet well defined!

  • Charleston Offlineorama V; 11/7/2019-11/10/2019 (The Holy City): Earthy forest with some still-kicking red fruits. Sweet tannins and a little bit of Indian spice. Surpisingly good I thought.

  • Charleston V - the wooden anniversary; 11/6/2019-11/10/2019 (Charleston, SC (various locations)): This was another favorite of mine in the line-up which is interesting because it was more in the earthy and birch branch and all of that style. Reminded me a lot of licking bark. The thing that I found compelling though was the balance and structure. Just very well put together. In a great spot with the age.

  • Tasted blind at a group event: Loads of classic old burg qualities of forest floor, beetroot, savory and hints of tomato leaf. Very much alive and kicking, I wish I'd thought to ask the person who brought this as to cork condition,... since I see that all notes on this are from just the past few years. I'm guessing this was a reconditioned bottle since the new regime of Rovani and friends took over. 93+

  • Thanksgiving wine, and it did not disappoint. Still a lot of life left in this wine, but I'd say to drink her now.

  • Bottle Appearance:
    - The label was clean and undamaged, but not fully adhered to bottle in all places
    - Neck fill was approximately one half inch below the foil
    - The wine through the glass appeared to be ruby in color and clear
    - Sediment was clearly visible in the bottle, but a lesser amount than one might expect for a wine of its age
    - The foil was clean and undamaged

    Upon Opening:
    - The top of the cork appeared clean with only a trace of mold present
    - The cork was firmly set in the bottle, but extracted without problem once it began moving
    - The cork was solid, firm, and intact, with minimal wine permeation up the cork
    - The inside of the neck of the bottle was soiled where the cork was set. This cleaned up easily with a wet towel
    - The wine was poured through a Vinturi aerator with a screen, through a coffee filter, and into a decanter
    - Minimal sediment was trapped in the screen, but a good deal of fine sediment was trapped by the coffee filter

    Wine Characteristics:
    - Color – clear garnet with strong orange hues
    - Bouquet upon opening – light overall with aromas of aged balsamic, alcohol, and brandy
    - Bouquet after aeration – approximately two hours after opening; light overall with aromas of brandy, spice, aged balsamic
    - Flavor profile upon opening – tart red fruit, slight honey
    - Flavor profile after aeration – approximately two hours after opening; blood orange, cranberry, plum, strawberry, allspice, slight clove, earth, and citrus

    Overall Assessment:

This wine provided an enjoyable and exciting tasting experience. It was exciting to taste a wine that was over 46 years old and to find that it still had good color, acidity, and flavors. Unfortunately, the wine appeared to be beginning a sharp downhill slide in its evolution and likely would have been a better tasting experience if opened some years earlier. While we did not regret spending the $179 to purchase this particular bottle of wine, we would not spend the same amount on the same bottle of wine. With that said, however, we would be willing to spend a similar amount for a bottle from Remoissenet Père et Fils with less age.

    Score:
Although passed prime drinking, I added extra points to certain categories to account for age and enjoyment.
