  • Coming back to this after 4 years for my 2nd bottle. Opened for 3 hours. Color is deep garnet. On the nose: Plum, cassis, espresso and leather. On the palate: Plum, dark chocolate, cassis, leather, sour cherry, a bit of baking spices and chalky tannins. Silky mouthfeel and Long finish. Just excellent Bordeaux. Still young at 8 years. A lot of life here.

  • Early Mar 2024, Rheingau Gourmet Festival, rarity diner “25 vintages of Chateau Montrose”: according to the sommelier double decanted for up to 6 hours!; deep purple color; intense nose of red and dark berries; like cherry juice in the mouth; soft, slightly lactic texture. 93-94+?/100

My neighbor was very excited about the Montrose 2015 and saw it at nearly the same quality level like the 2016 vintage. For me there is currently a solid quality difference, that’s why I awarded 2 points less for the Montrose 2015 . However, it reminds that wine tasting is a very subjective hobby.

  • Dinner party, so I didn't have time to write notes on each wine. Remember this being very satisfying.

And I remember thinking that this needed a little time to breathe before serving

  • Wow, a serious step up and just a massive amount of delicious and incredible fruit to it.

  • This poured an opaque, glass-staining purple. Rich dark scents of creosote, licorice, and blackberry overlaid with a floral note and some smoldering embers and loamy earth lurking in the background. Very youthful and vibrant still with a deep core of concentrated dark primary fruit focused in the mid-palate and a long finish. Delicious wine with huge potential to the upside. But still early days even with an extended decant and best to wait another 5-10 years for this to really deliver the goods, IMO.

  • Drank at Home
Drinking now with a wonderful deep palate

  • (SYP) PNP - Much more restrained compared with the Baaswood Zun. Blackberry, savoury spice, sweet oak and vegetation on the nose. The palate was tight and savoury. It picked up an inky aroma after 5 hours of slow-ox, and evolved nicely into a polished and fresh wine.

  • 1st of 9. This is too early to be drinking, but I wanted to dip into these to get a base line. This is a beautiful, rich wine, with a deep nose, dark fruits, elegant tannins and a very long finish.

  • Trinity Wines tasting (Stavros Niarchos): Big, dense, round, full of red fruit, earth, a touch of licorice and some gamey notes, palate is big, bold, with black fruit, fresh, some warmth, tight tannins, silky "all things considered", long finish

  • Surprisingly drinkable at only seven years of age, and with only a one hour decant, the wine probably has an optimal drinking window of 2027-2045. Balanced, smooth, savory, lively acidity, and a nice mid-palate swetness in a 13.5% ABV package. Is it worth $100 per bottle ? A delicious wine but not a good QPR.

  • Three hour decant. Deep dark ruby magenta color. Truffled chocolate, damp parchment, and black cherry on the nose. Smooth, dry, slightly tart palate. Firm, but low intensity tannins on the medium finish.

  • Wine Spectator 40th Anniversary; 10/21/2021-10/23/2021 (Marriott Marquis): Fresh and fruity and yet feels like it's built to age.

  • Quick sample at a trade tasting, bottle had been opened for extended period (exact timing not known)

medium deep red-purple color, lovely ripe nose of cassis and berries, on the palate this has definitely put on weight since I last had the wine and the fruit is quite open- if still very primary- with good mid-weight depth of cassis and dark fruits, broad chalk notes and just a hint of leather, fine long classic finish, not quite punchy- but still charming with a good classic structure to keep all mildly restrained, time will tell but I think this may mature on the early side for Montrose but still have the long and rewarding life of a great vintage.

  • Double decanted and drank over a 2 hour dinner. Not being one for young Bordeaux, I popped this infant a friend gave me because, why wait?
Deep purple, a fresh forest soil nose, good depth for such a young wine. Tannins all still present as expected. Approachable…but with 5-10 years.

  • Mauve edge with opaque core. Primary nose with blackcurrant, cherries, spice cafe au lait. St Estephe earth and roses. Masculine and extroverted but more elegant than usual. It has presence. Best at 1 hour. 14 deg C. Riedel Bordeaux glasses. 2030-2050.

  • Bought a case and have been wanting to try even though it’s too young. Needs time but this wine is going to be great. Intense Cassis, very tart cherry and some great spice notes. Needs time to develop. Depth of flavor is massive. This is a must try in 5 + years.

  • moderately deep red/purple color, lovely nose of cassis and crushed blackberries with hints of raspberry, on the darker side of the fruit spectrum, on the palate a bit light when first opened and slippery across the palate, cassis, berries, chalk streaks, great tension, fine long finish, about 5 hours after opening the wine is showing greater depth and fullness but also substantial tannins, a more generous flowing sensation of fruit across the palate, sandwiched in between two massive and very self-evident vintages I can see how the 2015 is easily overlooked- but I think it an unfortunate mistake to do so, while this will likely be leaner than the 2014 and 2016 in time- everything is here for this to be a ripe and more charming Montrose, as well as one that will be more harmonious with food than the bigger vintages.

  • Tasted over two days. One of two standouts, along with the 2011 Gaja Darmagi, shared among family and friends during an exceptional wine weekend. This made an impression from the outset, with its luxurious bouquet and profile, typical of variety and place. Merlot, 29 percent of the assemblage, with its texturally gritty elegance, showed prominently. It showed better on the second day, with improved integration and overall seamlessness. Medium plus acid and medium powdery tannins suggest this will be quite long-lived, probably through 2045+. Exceptionally well balanced for a young wine. It merits 95 points now, and will very likely improve.

  • Currant, blackberry, coffee, earthy. This comes together nicely at this early stage. Was expecting it to be a bit more fruit forward given it's a 2015 but seems like the 2015's may starting to shut down for a bit. Favorite of the tasting but for the cost it wouldn't make my cut of top 2015's. Nice wine which though which I'd love to try in the future.

  • Ch.Montrose 2015

France - Bordeaux. 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29%, Merlot, and 4%, Cabernet Franc. Harvested by hand from September 15 to October 8, 2015.

Powerful, thight and yet seductive aromas with heavy blackberries, more ripe blackcurrants, clear coffee, anise, pipe tobacco and some cedar as well. Pretty full-bodied and authoritarian wine. More powerful berry tones, delicious smoke, spices, graphite and distinctive wood in the wine. Thight today, but still in its strange way shine. Solid tannins are marked on a long and powerful finish with distinctive leather, licorice and wood-feeling. Brilliant wine! 96 points.

  • 4 hour decant, this modern Montrose is delicious early, but it is about to enter into a deep sleeping phase, tobacco, fresh chopped wood and berry on the nose, elegant, energetic, dry with a tannic structure, shows blackberry, plum, roasted coffee beans, black tea and clove hints early on, has the structure to go for decades, had with braised short ribs, really nice with a hearty meal

  • 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc.

Intense and deep with light sweet currant, espresso, graphite, anise and fine pepper tobacco aromas. Really pretty nerve.

Full bodied and really authoritarian wine with beautiful fruit of blackberries, black currant, light spices, gorgeous licorice, charcoal and hefty graphite at a very long finish. Tight but great tannin structure. Packed in for the next 30-50 years. Heavy and great wine!

  • HDH Bordeaux Auction; 11/9/2018-11/10/2018 (Chicago, IL): High-toned, a bit of Sharpie, plenty of black fruit, and slightly raisiny on the nose. Shows a touch of menthol and oak as well. The palate isn't jammy, and there is lots of structure here, but the oak is obviously extremely prominent at this point. Plenty of black fruit and a nice rustic earthiness as well. Probably going to be an excellent wine, but far too young to properly evaluate. Enjoyable now? Not quite.

  • The 2015 Château Montrose is absolutely sensational showing in this vintage. It begins with wonderful aromatics of fresh crushed blackberries, dark cherries, florals, graphite and earthy minerals all take shape in the glass. Ripe, pure and beautifully concentrated this continues to impress with its remarkable balance and depth. It remains beautifully structured with a gorgeous seamless quality through the finish. Simply outstanding.

  • This was, by far, the best wine at a tasting of the 2015 Bordeaux. It had that typical dark purple Montrose appearance, was clearly dark fruit and rich, but it was not as tannic as other young Montrose that I've had in the past. It also had an elegance and delicacy that I have not experienced from this wine when young. If it takes on weight and develops the depths (and keeps the elegance and delicacy) that I suspect it will, it will turn into an spectacular, other-worldly wine.

  • Bordeaux Masterclass (Prince Sydney, 40 Hansard Street): Savoury, slightly meaty, blackcurrant, earthy and richly spiced, cedar and slight vanilla. Juicy, beautiful fresh blackcurrant, softly but massively grippy tannins all travel exceedingly long. Very young, very nice.

  • This is another gem that is much better from bottle than barrel. There is a smoky, spicy character to the waves of fruit on your palate. Full bodied, concentrated, long, fresh and clean, with a finish that stick with for at least 40 seconds. Comparing with the 2014, 2016 and 2017 over the years is going to make for a lot of fun tastings!

  • Heart's Delight Trade Tasting (Sofitel - Washington, DC): Gorgeous core of fruit on the nose (plums, blackberries), with loamy earth, charcoal. Such focus and depth on the palate, strong tannins and medium acidity. Rich black currant and blackberry fruit laced with spice, earth, pencil lead. Gorgeous stuff for the long haul.

  • This wine shows excellent density and power, and what else should you expect from a Super Second of this calibre. Sure, 2015 was a more challenging vintage than 2014, which seems more "effortless" and with smoother tannin, but Montrose made a yeoman effort to select the best grapes to craft a powerful 2015, that will get more refined as the tannins break down with time in your cellar. Certainly the fruit is ripe. Bravo.

  • Bordeaux 2015 in bottle (Zurich Arvi / Singapore UGCB): Dense and dark fruit, brooding, cedar, tobacco, leather. The sophisticated Montrose terroir is already coming through here. Good freshness and acidity but this needs time. After 2030 and will surely add a point by then. 95+

  • Tasted at the Arvi Bordeaux 2015 event in Zurich.

Earthy, blue berry type of fruit. A team player, not offending any one.

  • Assessing Bordeaux 2015 from bottle, part I; 11/2/2017-11/3/2017 (Bordeaux): Although closed in, I could feel the substance and concentration. Certainly a long distant runner for this estate. Already clamped and closed I suppose, conjuring images of 1975, 1986... with almost ferocious tannins. Given how well it showed from barrel and in a tasting last year, I will maintain this lofty score.

  • A year in barrel has added a lot of complexity, richness, and polish to the wine. There is depth of flavor and concentration now, along with more aromatic complexities. A bt more time of aging could make this even better! This should hit the top of my initial range with ease.

  • Showing a good depth of color, the tobacco, cassis, boysenberry and spice-filled aromatics are hard to avoid. Full-bodied and concentrated, there is a lot of power and tannin to contend with this year. It's going to take time for this wine to become civilized. The finish packs a large bushel of ripe, sweet fruit and flavor along with tannins in every mouthful. Representing 36% of the production, the blend consists of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. This wine reached 13.4% alcohol with a pH of 3.6 and the harvest took place between September 15 and October 8. Montrose which is on top of its game these days can fool you. It can be a bit hard to get a read on some vintages in their youth, making it is quite possible this wine could end up much better when it is in bottle. It would not be the first time that happened. I can tell you that from personal experience. 94 - 96 Pts
