good old Barolo typicity, but a little over the hill it seemed, had too much acidity / angularity without any fruit to balance... given my love of acidity and my distaste for 'soft' wines... this is saying a lot... I think this bottle was simply over the hill by 5-10 years

Translucent, pale garnet color with limpid orange rim. Rich, opulent and well-developed nose with aromas of sour cherry, sweet dark cherry, wizened plummy fruit, some tarry smoke, a little withered roses and a whiff of something glue-like or plastic. Developed and quiscent palate with still good acid brightness and a hint of grip from the ripe, resolved tannins. Supple and juicy flavors of dark and slightly dried-up cherry, some figgy fruit and a hint of plum marmalade with an undercurrent of smoke and dusty earth. Very long, brooding finish with ripe, juicy flavors of dark cherry marmalade, ripe dark berries, some black raspberry and a hint of mushroom.
A wonderful, immensely delicious old Barolo with the finest of balances between youthful, bright fruit, older wizened fruit and developed tertiary nuances - not forgetting the lovely structural acidity. The wine has reached its plateau of maturity some while ago, and even though I don't see the wine starting its downhill any time soon, I doubt there is quite little room for any further development. Drink or keep. Very recommended.

Consumed at the 50th birthday party of Tom Kaido. The bottle was kindly provided by Tom, having recently been procured from Rare Wine Company. Medium garnet in color, the wine showed an explosive, complex, perfumed bouquet of assorted aromas, including mocha, plums, mushrooms, leather and mint. Medium-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity and melted tannins. The flavors are complex and mirror the nose. The finish goes on and on. This is stunning, perfectly mature Nebbiolo! Drink now-12/14.

**** Pale ruby with garnet rim, lost of sendiments. Fully deveoped nose with medium plus intensity of sweet red cherries, redberries, earth adn soem mdicinal note to it. Dry, medium acidity, fully resolved tannin, light body, medium- alcohol with medium flavour of riped red cherries and redberries and a long finish. Very balance with medium plu intesity and complex although does feel like it is slightly over the peak but still drink very nicely. Excellent.

Funky, musty nose - not corked, but brett and something else perhaps. Palate was pleasantly better than the nose, like an aged premier cru Burgundy. With time, some of the funk of the nose blew off, and the palate continued to round out. Dark color, quite lively and pleasant.

Once a Month begins with Nebbiolo; 10/20/2007-10/22/2008 (NYC): This really was singing with a great nose of porcini, pine bark, deep ripe fruits, and insinuated tar and floral notes. In the mouth this managed the trick of mature nebbiolo with it's round plush texture that remained cool and crisp nonetheless. The only knock on the wine could be that in the mouth it was somewhat monotone but the texture and length made for compelling drinking.

With Michael Lehmann at Singer & Foy survey of 1978 Barolos. Medium ruby. Decent nose, good fruit. Good fruit, a bit out of kilter in the mouth. Pretty fine though. 5-11-14-7: 87/100.

1978 Piemonte Dinner Showcasing Produttori Crus (Flour + Water, San Francisco): Ruby. Very funky, overwhelming VA. I thought it was corked, others disagreed. At any rate, undrinkable.

Has a good, earthy depth in the mid palate but a sweaty dirtiness underlies it all. Over time caramel and mature, sherry-like aromas emerge.
