good old Barolo typicity, but a little over the hill it seemed, had too much acidity / angularity without any fruit to balance... given my love of acidity and my distaste for 'soft' wines... this is saying a lot... I think this bottle was simply over the hill by 5-10 years

Translucent, pale garnet color with limpid orange rim. Rich, opulent and well-developed nose with aromas of sour cherry, sweet dark cherry, wizened plummy fruit, some tarry smoke, a little withered roses and a whiff of something glue-like or plastic. Developed and quiscent palate with still good acid brightness and a hint of grip from the ripe, resolved tannins. Supple and juicy flavors of dark and slightly dried-up cherry, some figgy fruit and a hint of plum marmalade with an undercurrent of smoke and dusty earth. Very long, brooding finish with ripe, juicy flavors of dark cherry marmalade, ripe dark berries, some black raspberry and a hint of mushroom.
A wonderful, immensely delicious old Barolo with the finest of balances between youthful, bright fruit, older wizened fruit and developed tertiary nuances - not forgetting the lovely structural acidity. The wine has reached its plateau of maturity some while ago, and even though I don't see the wine starting its downhill any time soon, I doubt there is quite little room for any further development. Drink or keep. Very recommended.

1978 Piemonte Dinner Showcasing Produttori Crus (Flour + Water, San Francisco): Ruby. Very funky, overwhelming VA. I thought it was corked, others disagreed. At any rate, undrinkable.
