It’d be easy to dismiss this as a Cali fruit bomb. Nose is huge, red cherry, black cherry, white pepper on it. Wine is super fruitful, baking spices on it with all of the dark cherry notes. This is begging for some grilled meat, we paired w a roast beef on the grill and it was perfect. Let this decant for at least an hour and it’s so smooth. Finish is fruity w some pepper, not too long. Ready to drink now but feels like it has some years left to lay down.

Interesting to see the different tasting notes from others on this wine. Personally I could not DISAGREE more with Oenophilemoose about their tasting notes. I don’t think this wine has even reached its peak yet! It is incredibly complex! Day one was creamy black cherry with tobacco and chocolate cherry brownie notes. Day two revealed a complex melange of eucalyptus, blueberry, tobacco and chocolate with medium plus tannin and medium acidity. I think, given the track record of the Keenan Merlots, this has many years ahead. Decant for a couple of hours If drinking now.
Double decanted and consumed immediately (recommend). Color had brownish twinge and showing age. The last bottle I consumed had the same color and a prominent musty note and not consumable. However, this bottle drank well but has probably seen better days. If you have any, drink up since it's obviously past its sweet spot.

The Mailbox is one of my favorite merlots. It is consistently so good, and classic in its profile. Plus, relatively speaking, it has a pretty good QPR given ho yummy it is.

Deeply pigmented with garnet color coming through. At the rim, in a steeply tilted glass, it looks like the preDawn horizon on a clear summer morning.
Temp: 66°F (slightly cooler might be better) Perfect cork.
There's lots of liquorish at 1st, with bing cherry intermingled into the aroma. There's a Secondary layer of mineral, leather, and subtle funk. Structured like I didn't anticipate from a Merlot. It reminds me the Merlot from Spring Mountain because it also has a core of acidity that is lively. Finally, it finished with ripe Michigan blueberries flavors and aromas.

Nose has it going, dark fruit, hint of black pepper. First sip, palate feel is smooth, than it fades away and leaves you licking the tannins off your teeth. Everything I like in a Keenan Merlot, brisk dark coffee, some leather stained chocolate, flavors faint and loud at the same time. Glad I grabbed a case of this, one of those classic taste that satisfy without making it a big deal.

Spring Mountain/St. Helena Day Trip: Tasted at winery. Similar in style to the Napa Valley merlot, just more structured and a bit more tannic. At this point in their evolution I slightly preferred the Napa Valley.

The tannins were bitter and drying. The fruit did not show well in this bottle. There was dusty graphite and not much else.

Solid spring mountain effort. Extracted fruit but not overly tannic.
It tastes like blueberry and black currant (cassis). The body is full.
