Decanted off sediment, into bottle, followed for 30min.
Nose is a touch quiet but is fantastic and true to CDR. Cured meat, violets/lavender, raspberry paste. Palate is full bodied but doesn't feel heavy. The tannins are resolved and gentle acidity keeps things fresh, focused, and light. Fresh raspberries, lavender, soft herbs. Finish shows a good amount of structure, but it is soft and integrated. After that, floral notes, river stones, and very subtle bacon fat show over time.
8 years for an entry level wine and this is still fresh as a daisy. I do not detect any signs of age. Not overly complex but doesn't need to be, it is damn tasty. I'm very tempted to give this a 92, but I have to take off points for a quiet nose and a slightly underpowered palate (maybe by a notch or two). Very good 90 and excellent value at $15. If you prefer old world wines then grab as much of this as you can.
Drink now, at peak.

Between 1/2 hour and 1 hour of air in glass. This vintage of Guigal CDR has long been a favorite. The earth and meat aromas are here - but are more reticent. This strikes me as more concentrated than either the 2015 or 2016. Power packed. This excellent CDR has many years left! But.... this was my last bottle. If you only have a bottle or two of this - hold. If you have more, give it some air, and enjoy. ADDENDUM:(a) A glass left out overnight was still drinking well in the morning, confirming my sense that this was an exemplary vintage of this wine. (b) The following evening, the wine left in the bottle was delicious. (88-91).

Cotes du Rhone (Frank's place in Matraville): From Coravin. Jubey, red berry, slightly dusty sweet spice, liquorice, slightly reductive, with time a little blackberry, fruit forward and fresh nose. Medium plus intensity acidity, fresh, wild blackberry, chalky, drying, grippy tannins work hand in hand in the fruit and acid. Balanced. Long. Alcohol lends weight. Woof.

Too young. Strong primary fruit flavours of blackberry, raspberry, and clove backed by dark notes of earth and leather. Tannin is firm and very smooth. Acidity is strong, but sits just behind fruit and tannin.

Nose of dried cherry, winter spice, cedar. Palate is concentrated, somewhat raisinated red fruit, some of the spice and cedar but subdued. M- tannin, M to M + acid, M+ body, lots of concentration, this is pretty big and intense for the modest price and pedigree and I can see why some would like it for that reason. It’s not at all what I expected from a cooler vintage CdR though. My first Guigal CdR and if this is typical of the style it won’t be a go to for me (I really don’t like raisinated character in dry reds) but I look forward to trying the 2015 and 2016 bottles I have for comparison. 5.2/10

Elegant bouquet with good garrigue and red berries. On the palate garrigue, forest, red berries and elegant acidity. The tannin still has a pleasant bite. Good, decent, but not exceptional wine. Certainly a pleasure if you don’t want too much complexity.

PnP from a 375. Nose is a little warm. Clean, black fruit, and small dosage of pepper and bacon fat. It's got some energy and power to it, slightly sandy tannins. Dark fruit on its finish Enjoyable for the price, though a little monotone and lacking complexity but for the price not bad at all.

Jujube E. Guigal Wine Dinner: 2nd Course: Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2014, served with “Gado Gado”- stir fried and grilled vegetables with tofu and peanut sauce. Syrah dominant with Grenache and Mourvedre making up the balance. Very aromatic and rich- red plum, black tea, cherry blossom, black pepper, various other spices and hints of burning leaves in autumn. Terrific CdR. Not a great pairing, this wine needs more than vegetables, roasted pork came to my mind. Wine A- / Pairing: B-.

I buy this every year as it is one of the most reliable and delicious wines at its price point, and done in a classic (i.e not New World) style. Both the 2013 and the 2012 are drinking beautifully now. This fist bottle of 2014 has disappointed however, as it is tightly wound, closed and most worryingly it has a green and astringent quality. My advice is to put this away for a year or two, and to double-decant for one hour before serving.

Texturally quite nice, but rather "neutral" I guess in terms of flavor. Astringency tames down a bit by second day, and I guess there's some kind of slightly berry-ish mulch there peeking through at the end. Mostly for me it's tannins and acid and pleasant red-wine fullness of body. Probably worth revisiting in a few years.

Wine Tasting Group - Theme: Northern Rhone - May 6, 2018 (Michael's home): A southern Rhone ringer - blend of grenache, syrah, mouvedre. Light black and red berry aromas with herbs and a hint of alcoholic heat. Palate had ripe cherry and blackberries, maybe a hint of blueberries as well. Smooth but medium bodied, esp. compared to the syrahs before this. Moderate tannins grip the mid-palate. A relatively short finish with some cough syrup.

Quite good for the price. Really improved on day two and three. Dark cherry with hint of smoke and slight mint on the nose. Balanced and tasty on the palate. Not terribly complex, but quite satisfying and easy drinking. Long silky finish. www.vincrush.com

Color: Transparent ruby. Nose: Red berries, a hint of cherries and a hint of herbs. Mouth: There is a nice bite from the tannins but not offensive at all. Very good length and expressiveness. The 14% alc. is fairly well hidden. There is also an aroma of violets. Bought at Denner.

Medium-dark purple with a touch of red. Aromas of dark fruit like blackberry with a touch of spice or pepper. Drying tannin. Plenty of acid. Seems like a typical CdR profile, so it fits the bill if that's what you want. It's a big wine with the tannin and acid and would probably be good with grilled meat. Decent value.

88/89. Pnp an 88. On day three becomes an 89. Has aromas of polish, peppers, blackberries, chalk, coffee hints, black olives and herbs . Its medium bodied chunky and broad shouldered lightly earthy black fruits palate has decent acidity and some spice. Ends medium and a bit dry. A food wine. 14%. Could be laid down for 2/3 years.
When opened, it seemed a bit one-dimensional and certainly had dusty tannins in abundance. There was an objectionable medicinal taste. The whole experience was so disappointing that I put the wine aside. After a day: restrained nose with good dark, plummy fruit. Dusty tannins on the mid/end palate, still. Some slight tar/almost tobacco characteristics and hints of orange. The medicinal characteristics had gone. Still not the Guigal Cotes du Rhone that I have enjoyed over a couple of decades. This is a wine that is produced in vast quantities and the quality must vary. This vintage has been highly rated by the pundits but I do wonder if they are sometimes sent selected blends that do not always match the wines we buy from retailers. Disappointing. I think Guigal appears to have allowed quantity to displace consistency and/or quality in some of its cheaper blends. Perhaps this vintage still needs time but it is not sold as a wine to lay down. In light of earlier reviews I kept a small amount but, after 2 days, it was no better. I do hope this is a one-off bottle.
Note. Another bottle was tasted a few days later with friends but opened 24 hours before tasting. It was assessed quite well. Perhaps this disappointing bottle was indeed a one-off.

Jury out. Underwhelmed but apparently a bit of bottle variation. My sample lacked fruit and drying tannins dominated. Suspect it might be better after a decant or in a year? Usually very reliable so maybe just a poor bottle.

GSM Rhone blend. More concentrated purplish ruby than the 2012 vintage. Nose and palate are both tight now, though there is potential with raspberry, blackberry, pepper, herbs, menthol. Quite tannic and dry. Aerated the wine about 2 hours but it was not enough, little change on day 2. So I suggest a long aeration or open, bottle breathe 1 hour then enjoy 2 days later. On day 3 it softens a bit, sweeter, smoother.
Disjointed and green on days one and two. But by day 3, it knocks the ball out of the park. Fruit, spice, acidity and structure are all in balance. Elegant but with nice garrigue typicity as well as some power and depth of flavour. Incredible value.

Will only improve with time. Similar to other vintages: good purity, garrique, herbal notes etc, excellent acidity and overall so well-balanced... Very good on second day. Parker 88-90, I agree completely...
Recently released (in the Netherlands, anyway), 90% from Côtes du Rhône Villages. A blend of 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre, partially aged in wood (18 months in foudres), 14% ABV, 2 million bottles produced. Good depth of colour, youthful purple; ample black fruit on the nose, warm spices and a hint of garrigue, good depth; for a generic Côtes du Rhône this is impressively powerful and structured on the palate, fresh and well-balanced, with solid tannic grip and good flavour definition; quite tight on the finish, very good length. Not yet the polished style which Guigal are looking for, but certainly impressive. Clearly better than both the 2013 and the 2011, and a notch above the generous and ripe 2012. Will repay a few years of cellaring. Excellent value (I paid € 6.99 today at my local supermarket - it was discounted).
Opened up quickly, fruity but tannins creep up on you and keep things balanced, enjoyed more than i thought although this has been a perennial fav, drank with eggplant parm, would drink again.

Avec le rabais et les points, c'est presqu'un RQP.
Assez ample et corsé, gorgé de fruit avec des épices et de la garrigue.
Long avec de beaux tannins charnus.
Simple mais bien fait.

In the bouquet red berries and some garrigue. On the palate red and black berries, some bell pepper and herbs and spices. Firm acidity and slightly drying tannin. 86 – 87

At Wine Society tasting.

Opened for 2 hours before tasting. As a stand alone very dry. Much better when paired with a beef burgundy dish. Not sure I would buy again.

Cotes du Rhone. Light-medium red color and light on taste and light on aroma. Overall good value as expectations were not high from Trader Joes.

Pretty ruby red. Warm red fruit flavors with a touch a savory and a firming degree of acidity. Good value, consistent wine.

Opened up quickly, fruity but tannins creep up on you and keep things balanced, enjoyed more than i thought although this has been a perennial fav, drank with eggplant parm, would drink again.
