Fresh redcurrant, hint of cedar and spice, still some structure, but has mellowed over the years. Decent cru bourgeois, very good value and shows the benefit of patience - drink now and until 2025.

Starting to drop its fruit and focus on its earthy, cedar and tobacco character, this medium-bodied, red berry filled wine requires drinking in the immediate future.

Bought originally when still in the barrel at a knock down price, this wine was well above my expectations. Mellow but still vibrant, lots of red fruit, no sharp edges and a pretty long finish. Probably at its peak now. In a terrific year like 2005 it is possible to find much undervalued but great wine and this is certainly one of them given its modest price

Kept mostly under condition 2 since december 2007 (see my profile). Color: unusually dark ruby. Nose at the third day with cedar and other mature notes. Taste at the first day: after 10 minutes in the glass despite the age of this bottle quite vivid red and dark fruit, a hint of iodine and a minty note in the finish. At the third day dark and red fruit, with good mature notes, all well integrated. Nicely herbal in the finish (mint and sage). Maybe a little bit tired, but really nice. The acidity was OK. Still some tannins in the taste, also at the third day - maybe because of some overextraction? Nevertheless keeping this wine for such a long time has payed off. This experience encourages to cellar other 2005 Medocs further. This wine was at its peak now; 87-88 on its own, with food 88.

Still dense colour, not drastic signs of maturity. Ripe nose, broad and dense, slightly saline black fruits, perhaps a little old school dust. Palate shows the richness of the vintage, and also the limitations of the terroir. Ample, rounded, quite smooth and enough fruit, but drops off a little. Savoury, dry, neat, with some touches of liquorice/ink at the edges. Nice drop, tastes like Claret, decent buy at £20 for nearly 15 years and a cracking vintage.

That's more like it! Quite simple, but now the age has softened the previously sharp edges, and we're left with a basic cru bourgeois, with blackcurrant upfront and some refreshing acidity on the finish. Drink now and next 3 or 4 years?

Kept under condition 2 since the end of 2007 (see my profile). At the first two days mostly dominated by tannins. But surprisingly (see my earlier notes of this year) it tasted at the fifth day much better: tannins more resolved, more fruit, with eucalyptus, and softer. This fits Parkers remark that 2005 Bordeaux needs much patience. I’m going to keep my last bottle for two or three more years. Potentially 87+.

Kept under condition 2 since 2008 (see my profile). Color: dark purple. Nose: iodine. Taste: red and black fruit, chocolate. Medium bodied. Quite good wine from clearly a good year, but not concentrated enough to be exciting. Also with a short drinking-window. Still two bottles left, which I will open within three, four months. 87(-88).

Kept under condition 1 since 2008 (see my profile). Color: ruby. Nose: plum and blueberries. Taste: Plum and blueberries, with a soft acidity abd resolved tannins. (Light to) medium bodied. No complexity, a bit thin, but nevertheless really attractive. At the second day less fruit. At its top now and when kept under the same condition probably soon over it. Drink up. 85-86.

Kept according condition 2 since 2008 (see my profile). Only short notes: color: (purple-)ruby. Taste: rather sweet and with some richness. At last the tannins are resolved, quite mature and ready to be drunk now. 86.

Colour: dark ruby. Nose: not much of a nose. Taste: red berries, some chocolate, soft tannins. Quite much structure, that is not sufficiently backed by fruit. Although the softening of the tannins since my last note (11-01-2009) it is still lacking taste. Is this wine over-extracted or will further keeping - for one year for example - still lead to a beter taste? 84.

Took about 1 hour to open up, nose gets better till we finish the bottle about 2 hour later, medium bodied, tannin mostly integrated, prefer body to be a bit fuller.

Purple crimson. Muted nose upon first opening and for much of one day. Medium viscosity. Medium bodied. Moderate tannins. Moderate alcohol. Palate more pronounced than nose with black currant, berries and some spice. Dry finish. Nose was considerably more open, fruitier and prettier on day two. This was a half bottle. I would imagine a full bottle would be tighter and would therefore decant well before drinking or waiting a year or two.

When I popped this bottle, I poured part of it in 0,25l smaller bottle and put that bottle in the fridge. The rest of the bottle gave the impression of a wine that was completely closed and badly integrated. Even after two hours of air the oak came through strongly and I was planning to pour the rest down the sink.
But, when I grabbed the small bottle in the fridge 3 days later I was very positively surprised. It had integrated and developed nice mature aromas. It still had some tightness from the tannins, but was quite delicious. So, I guess this will be an excellent wine in the future, but that future might be as far as at least 5 years from now.

Decanted for several hours. Not really a bad wine, but at this moment the taste is not differentiated, a bit poor, at least compared to the 1996 of this chateau (drunk in 2000), about which I was enthousiastic. I think this wine might be to young to judge it rightly.

Cherries, pomegranate, a nuance of vanilla, some fairly prominent oak, and a strong mineral quality. A very good, tannic, and long finish, although somewhat bitter due to oak and youth. A fine example of a lower-end 2005 Left Bank wine, which really shines in this vintage (the '04 was quite good, as well). A steal at Trader Joe's for $15 or so, whose French wines are usually terrible at best. This is a great weeknight quaff, and would be a worthy choice for a BBQ. Definitely decant this for an hour or so, otherwise it will tast thin and astringent.

Light purple robe. Aroma of violet, sour plum, tobacco and leather. Tart black currants, raspberry and plum dominate attack and quickly dissipate into youthful tannin towards the finish. Overnight, aroma improved to include more floral notes and tannin has softened. Not so many layers to appreciate but pleasant to drink. It may improve over a few more years. It should marry well with simple roasted lamb chops or frank steak with garlic. Nicely balanced QPR bottle for mere $12.

Roses, currant on the nose. Currant on the body as well, juicy and fairly ripe, with blackberry as well, but a bit thin in the mid-palate. The finish has a touch of minerality, and there is enough tannin to keep one's interest. Overall, this is modest in its dimensions, but very, very good for an everyday wine.

Deep color, not much on the nose. Taste was also closed. The second day was no better. Shouldn't there be at least some fruit? This is a banner vintage and there's just no flavor. I remember the '04 as being much better. For me this is a PASS.

Retailer tasting (@ vdV): Full bodied. Good fruits like cassis and black cherries, Pleasant soft oak as well as tannin. Not extremely complex, but the wine is more than ok. A wine with a great pqr.

Today's Bordeaux (W Hotel, Chicago IL): nose: real silky nose with ripe cherry, black currants, floral tones, blueberry aspects and bits of earth. Much more deep then the regular La patache which shows off the vines age as these were around 25-30 years I was told as opposed to 10 year old vines on the regular Patache
taste: nice and firm with good amounts of cherry, black currant, tobbacco, and cedar box notes
overall: really good attack and weight with a nice silky feel to compliment the wine. Nice transitions with a pleasant, albeit brief finish. It probably needs a bit more time and is well worth buying
