Boxing Day Tasting (Birch Road Cellar - Chicago IL): Single blind flight of Claude Dugat 1996 & 2000, Bernard Dugat 2000, followed by a double blind mystery companion. Balanced old Burgundy that is classically Gevrey with its rugged good textures, black fruit, leather, and meat. Very good length. Maybe better a few years back, but still very good.

Single blind Claude Dugat 96 | 00 | Dugat-Py 00. This was generally easy to identify as the 96 given a little more evolution and more prominent acid structure. While it may not have had the immediate pleasure the two '00 wines were providing, I loved this for its depth of flavor including some more mushroom and earth character, while still have ample meaty fruit. Back half a peak window, but still at peak.

1996 Dinner...Top Champagne, Burgundy, Bordeaux (Park Ridge Country Club): In '96 Grand Cru flight. Opened approx 30 minutes before serving. Rich and ripe black fruity, very bold and meaty with impressive concentration. Still ever-so-slightly backward and ever-so-slightly oaky, but lots of fun in this glass.

Intoxicating nose with layers herbs, wild berries, animal, feral, and stem. Palate was expressive with sweet berry fruit. Very classic with a silky and smooth touch on the palate. Drinking beautifully now, but it surely will age.

Acker 2019/10 (Bouley): Old school brewed red fruit with so much freshness, smoked then grilled meat, mushroom, mellow florals, minty spice. Linear, incredibly silky and smooth palate with a slight showing of vintage medicine mark, firm finish with sois bois; drink soon. 96

1996 Burgundy Retrospective - The Second Session (Eddie V's - Tysons Corner, VA): Wine 4, From the beginning, best nose of the flight. Perfectly mature youthful nose displaying opulent red fruit, raspberry, cherry compote, sous bois, grilled cep, caramel, cappuccino, sweet spices and earth. Beautifully integrated palate, layers upon layers of rich red fruit, silky, polished and fluid, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long sweet red fruit driven finish with sous bois at the end. Most guesses as Bachelet. This is drinking beautifully, a classic beautifully mature Burgundy. FWIW, Bob loved Claude Dugat when he was still reviewing Burgundy, Pierre as well. At one point, the 96 Griotte sold for more than the 96 La Tache.

Wonderful spicy nose of concentrated ripe cherries and smoked meat. Sweet cherries on the palate backed by velvety tannins. At a perfect place for drinking today with years ahead of it. Possibly a case of bottle variation, but this wine came ahead of the 1996 La Tâche and Rousseau Chambertin at a recent blind tasting with reliable palates. I am buying, and so should you (after I am done).
For comparison, I had the 2002 Vogue Musigny next to this wine, another fabulous wine that’s drinking well today with a similar ripe cherry fruit profile. It was a close call, but I preferred the spice notes in this wine. The Musigny had more minerality but was behind on development at this stage.

Pre-Paulée Friday Warm-up Dinner (Piperade - SF, CA): An unreal nose that has so much depth, richness, intensity and layering -- 100 point nose. The palate follows with rich concentrated black cherry fruit that is very powerful, yet packaged in an overall velvety frame. Intense notes of spice and meat. Wow.

Pre-Paulée Warm-up Dinner (Piperade - San Francisco CA): Lots of black cherry and berry aromas, flavors with excellent concentration and length. Still wonderfully fresh with faint hints of evolution in support. This wine has consistently been this good for many years. Served alongside the 2000s from both Claude Dugat and Bernard Dugat-Py.

Wines Tasted at HDH Auction; 2/19/2016-2/20/2016 (Tru Restaurant - Chicago IL): Served single blind alongside the 1998 vintage. Black berries and cherries throughout with lots of power and concentration. I really like the meaty, smoked sausage character. Still slightly firm and reserved, this is wonderful now with upside from here. I screwed up the blind order at first, but eventually we figured out which was which. Most slightly preferred this 1996, but others were surprised how close the two were in terms of quality.

Wine Dinner Extravaganza (North Lincoln Avenue Loft - Chicago IL): Popped and poured, served alongside Bachelet and Roumier (corked). Ripe black fruit and lots of spice with some character of animale, leather and roasted meat. This got deeper and richer with more air, tasting best several hours after it was first poured.

Clearly more advanced than the 2000 Griotte, but still many years ahead of it. Dugat is just masterful, there is a purity and balance that is exceptional in all his Grand Cru's it seems. I prefer the Griotte, but that's probably more to palate than quality. The Griotte is deeper, more intense and the Charmes is "happier" and shows more red fruit. That said, I cannot think of a finer Charmes than this.

$97.50 retail, post-discount. Beautiful. Lush, ripe, pure fruit - black cherry stands out - with good underlying grip. Will live another 10+, IMO, based on the balance, tannic support, and the fact that at eight years of age it is still showing so much primary fruit. Unfortunately, my only bottle!

Piperade. Interesting wine, some funk and extremely rich. Bet I could serve this blind and convince some it’s a Celestins.
