Dinner at Bellyhappychef: Not the best bottle - slightly pushed cork that was soaked through. I like VA and high-toned fruits but even this was a little too much for me. Definitely showed the heat of the vintage with the alcohol persisting on the palate, and the tough tannins made it quite difficult to drink. On the second day the tannins softened with more evidence of the pretty red fruits that I associate with the producer, but the alcohol was still protruding.

Post Sat wine swap sharing. 24 hrs of air already. Drank in Conterno Sensory. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of tertiary earth, dusty stones, dark sour plum, dried sour red cherries, leather, dried leaves and fallen rose petals. Developed. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of old leather, tertiary earth, dusty stones, sour red cherries, dark red plums, sweet tea leaves. Long rumbly grippy finish. Good quality. Seems to have matured early, or maybe off bottle? Clunky and feels alcoholic.

Slightly shy nose, dried rose, bright strawberry. Medium bodied, chalky persistent tannins, slightly diffuse red fruit notes, reasonable length. Preferred the 2009 to the 2012 - maybe this just needs some time. Tasted alongside Elio's 2016 Langhe Nebbiolo and Monchiero Rocche 2013.

Dark and earthy with a lot of tertiary aromas. Cherries, rosehip, dried roses, balsamico, leather, menthol and damp soil. Deep and refined, not so much about the fruit. Impressively ripe tannins, proper grip and bite but not disturbing at all despite its youth. The acidity is there for aging as well so this wine will live and develop for a long time. Long aftertaste with a distinct note of menthol that brings a wonderful freshness to the wine. Continues in a non fruity way and finishes off with moist leaves, balsamico and figs. This is powerful stuff with depth and complexity. Probably a bit biased after the visit at the winery a few days before but this '12 really impressed me. Not near its peak of course but well worth a try if you got the bottles.

baking spice, red currant, olives on the nose; firm acid and tannin, fruity on the palate, great potential but needs some bottle age to settle down

better on night two but still not enough Monforte depth or any other worthwhile attributes. Tough to imagine this improves

Dusty, lacking focus, a little clumsy, alcohol a bit showy, some charm though not memorable
