Very good. Just a shade below great. Man, I love Yarra Yerring. Restrained, elegant, good fruit and acid. Not jammy/confected/alcoholic. Seamless. Hint of eucalyptus.

Enjoyed out at dinner. This bottle is in a great drinking window at nearly 20 years. Did not take formal notes, but would echo others notes of blue/black fruits with a touch of earthiness. Tannin structure is nicely incorporated. Overall an excellent, well balanced wine.

Basically a pop and pour, but this smells absolutely incredible. It does smell mature, but very pretty with ripe mature fruit, but also earthy soil tones (dirt), pretty gravely rocks, mushroomy red fruits. Yum. Truly spectacular palate, with incredible red fruits, earthy notes of soil and stones, but integrated with beautiful acidity and lovely red fruits. The acid is so in balance with the fruit. The wine is decadent and vibrant, yet feeling low alcohol and the acid just rips your face off at the end. What a marvelous wine, and a real treat. I need to seek more of this out.

This was a significantly improved showing to previously with a dark crimson colour with some edge redness and a rich nose of dark raspberries, crushed blackcurrants, garnet plums and nice touches of tobacco and cedar. The palate has medium weight and lovely intensity well balanced by persistent fine tannins and savoury touches of cedar and tobacco. A fine bottle of Yarra Cabernet.

Drunk for lunch with cheeses. Deepest darkest garnet with no bricking at rim. A lovely, expansive nose full of explosive ripe hedgerow fruits - blackcurrents, blackberries, sloes, wild raspberries, wild plums. Very smooth in the mouth with excellent balance. Tannins have largely melded into the wine. A strong mid-palate and very good length. Even better on Day 2 - more rounded and mellow. Drinking very well now and will do so for many years to come - a glass full of hedgerow fruits!! Lovely!

Did not care much for this bottle. Nose was flat without telling much of a story. Body was medium with the usual array of flavours but did not enjoy the green, leafy and almost capsicum flavours from the Malbec. A disappointment. 2004 was during the transition period at the vineyard so who knows...... Drink now.

Whack! A rare event that a Yarra Valley wine that would complain to me for opening it too young. Straight after opening, the nose was very primary fruit driven with Malbec and Petit Verdot dominating. The body was closed with strong cassis flavour and tannin that gripped forever. Another whack two hours later. Barely opened but it is a world class Bordeaux blend. Violet and floral nose, great structure in the body that was quite dominated by the Merlot and Petit Verdot. The Cabernet Sauvignon was there all along to play defence that provided it with the required structure. I am now very bruised but a most excellent Yarra Valley wine. Can go easily another 10 years without any drama. Cool climate Bordeaux blend does not get much better than this in the Yarra Valley.

Saturday late night at Maison Dakota. Few hours of air-time in bottle already. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Cork-closure. Aooearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour with garnet rim. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of vegetal green capsicums, tobacco, blackcurrants, blackberries. Developed. On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol (13%), fine polished fully integrated high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of blackberries, blackcurrants, tobacco, earth, green and red capsicums. Long finish. Very good quality. Great mouth-feel. Luxurious yet controlled ripe black fruits. With a tolerable herbal edge showing the true character of the Cabernet. Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot in the mix also. Such a fine Bordeaux blend from YY once again. At peak, drink and enjoy.

Good Victorian Cabernet but not an exciting year with the texture a little lacking in excitement. Touches of green Cabernet are indicative of a cooler year or early picking. Fine finish.
Not sure on this one. Drunk over four nights but it's not really showed that much. Still very primary on the nose and palate, but there's a slight sweet core which turns me off at this stage. Not elegant nor full bodied, it's caught in a strange place. Might drink another one in five years. 13% and cork.

Dark purple turning violet at the rim with an ethereally perfumed nose of earth, herbs and currants. The palate is full-bodied with a muscular, attractive tannic grip that's engaging with flavors of black currant, cowhide leather, espresso, tobacco and vanilla. Finishes long with a hint of spice and rosemary. This is just beautiful with a rustic character. Well-balanced and structured to drink now with 30 minutes decanting until 2024.

Formal note not taken. Loads of cassis on the nose, which also showed some earthy/briary and cedar (perhaps oak derived?) notes. The palate is powerful, showing ripe sweet fruit and a decent amount of slick, glossy tannin. Relatively viscous and although obviously new world, there is a nice elegance. This is good to go now, but should have another 10+ years in the tank. Nice wine.

NobleRottersSydney - Alliteration night (Alio's, Surry Hills): [cork, 13%] {Vlad - Guest} Also decanted for 2 hours prior to drinking. Developing nose of olives and blackcurrants, herbs; some green but never unripe. Powerful palate, but tight and compact; there’s no green here. Luscious and harmonious; all the cabernet family flavours are generously present; sweet fruit meets medium powdery tannin; only medium-bodied in weight but with great density and yet totally drinkable. Alcohol is spot on. Medium-long finish. Should drink very nicely for another 5 years at least. Wonderful wine.

Yarra Wineries visit (Coldstream, Yarra): {cork, A$65} Dark ruby. Essence of briary, cassis-like cabernet fruits. The palate is surprisingly approachable; youthful, but the tannins are so fine that early drinking is not unthinkable. Still it’s rather tight, and the long finish is just singing a single phrase at this young age. Medium-full bodied, but impeccably balanced, this wants 10 years to bloom.

The palate is surprisingly approachable; youthful, but the tannins are so fine that early drinking is not unthinkable. Still it’s rather tight, and the long finish is just singing a single phrase at this young age. Medium-full bodied, but impeccably balanced, this wants 10 years to bloom.
