OMG #104 (Plymouth, MI): Ruby colored, a hard to pin down creaminess on the nose, spicy fruit for Bordeaux. Easy going. Thinking this could probably coast for a handful of additional years (maybe 5) but wouldn't push more than that.

From 375: Still drinking well. Will last longer than Cellar Tracker predicts. This inexpensive Bordeaux delivers. If you still have this in your cellar, drink it now. Will hold a few years but will not improve. Larger formats should last many more years. This wine delivers more for current drinking than the '15 Figeac I had last night. Well balanced wine. A positive surprise from my cellar.

Red plum and black currant, surprisingly a pretty dominant tannic structure still, just a hint of cedar. A rising tide means this one can last, but never will be exciting. But fine with steak on patio. B-/B

Again, a bewitching nose of dark cherry, both red and black plum, stone, forest floor, oak spices and alcohol. Also, a beautiful ruby color in the glass with nary any bricking. The palate just doesn't follow the nose in this case (yet again). Relatively fruit-poor, with oak tannins and spices, cherry pit, lead pencil and nearly unripe black currant. Yep, still enjoy the 2004 version of this better. But that nose...!

1-015. Drank this one with an Indonesian Gado Gado dish - perhaps not the best combination. We were not entirely impressed; "Greysac" sound a bit dull and that's what stuck in my mind. For sure a drinkable wine, but don't expect too much. The best experience was the magnificent stone red color. Here we go: currant, a hint of eucalyptus and pine (but not much), after some time the scent of leather, blackberry and cherry prevailed. I still have half a case to go ;-). I paid EUR 15.25 per bottle; lots of sediment by the way, my glass looked like an ashtray.

Picked these up on sale for $12.50 around 2010. Great buy. This bottle seems to be at peak right now. Ruby in color. The nose has some cherries, tobacco and leather. On the palate, some fruit left but nice layering of earth, tobacco and cherries. Good balance. Just a hint of tannins. Lesser Bordeauxs in great vintages is a great QPR.

From 375: Keeps getting better as it sleeps in the cellar. Cheap bordeaux doesn't get much better than this. Reticent nose but very forthcoming on the palate. Reminds me of Girardelli dark bitter chocolate. Tannins still dominant but don't get in the way of the sweet fruit. Nice acidity and a good long finish. Will age and improve somewhat.

Drank nicely, with tannins still present but fruit and graphite showing up. Will wait a couple years on the next bottle. Night #2: this has really opened up and put on some weight. Cedar, graphite, rhubarb(?), fine tannins, a real improvement over first night. (88+ on second night)

Classic Bordeaux, hints of leather and cedar coming into play but still plenty of fruit. Tannins offer structure. Little flat mid-palate but a pleasant drop.

This is drinking very well right now. I decanted about half of the 3 liter bottle for about an hour before leaving for dinner. Just a hint of Bordeaux funk on the nose along with dark fruit, cedar and leather. The tannins were out of the way but supporting the balance on the palate well. Good cherry fruit coming through on the medium length finish.

Real Bordeaux in flavor profile and structure but lacking charm at least at this stage. Serviceable with grilled lamb chops. Actually better the next day, showing predominance of pleasant Cab Franc fruit.

Powerful nose full of forest floor & leather with hints of cherry & raspberry and a whiff of smoke, this could even be smelt from the glass at a full arms length. Dark red fruit in the glass with little sign of aging. The palate is smooth with initially a 3-4 second finish. Dry with ripe cherries and very little tannins. Quite a simple but very pleasant old-world styled wine.

On opening, this had a delightfully funky, earthy nose. After 20 minutes in the decanter, there was an aroma of blueberries coming off of the wine. After an hour, we started drinking the wine. The nose had evolved to graphite and pencil shavings and this would have been great other than being so wound up in tannins that it distracted from the wine. Certainly still a win (for me, anyway) at this price point, but a clear do-not-purchase if you are sensitive to highly tannic wines.

Intriguing nose full of cured meat with hints of red cherry & raspberry and a whiff of smoke. Unfortunately the palate is not nearly as interesting, Dry with dusty cherries and light tannins, likely tobacco as well though I don't have a point of reference for that. Simple but pleasant old-world styled wine.

NIce Bordeaux wine: minerality, tobacco, red fruit from this nice wine.. At its price point, this is a great way to "get into" Bordeaux and learn what makes wine from this region so special. Soft tannins, good food wine, nice lingering aftertaste

Very much in line with what you expect from Greysac - lots of typicity: graphite, slightly green herbal cab flavors, etc. Competent for the price but nothing special. 84-85

What's most impressive about this wine is the fact that it delivers on all of the typical Bordeaux characteristics (albeit out of balance). The concentrated dark fruits, tobacco, leather are all there. I have never had a better Bordeaux for $11 or less. This wine declined very rapidly over night...thus, I don't know if it has much room to grow. Cheers!

Solid. First night with admittedly inadequate decanting, too much tobacco on the palate for my taste. On the second night, a more earthy taste without distinct tobacco. Fruit became more evident on the second night with berry notes. Nose with hints of vanilla both nights. Again, solid & definitely drinkable.

A quaffing Bordeaux perhaps but at $12 one would be hard pressed to do better. A knockout nose and lots of berry in the mouth. A little tannic perhaps but who cares at this price point?

Excellent QPR and since it was in 3ltr size, it could have lasted a few more years, but it drank nicely all night long and had a particularly nice nose of black fruit and earth with a silky palate of restrained red fruits and a moderate finish that had light tannins and paired well with light beef.

From .375. Medium deep garnet with bright purple glimmer. Medium bodied and finish. Strawberry, herbs and oak on nose and palate. Slight green aspect also which blew off after 15 minutes. Drink now-2013.

Started off pretty harsh, but really opened up after decanting and 45 minutes. Classic Bordeaux. Not too complex (it is a simple Medoc after all...). Medium bodied, and quite nice length. Will hold well for 5+ years but I would not expect it to turn into a major swan.

dark, semi clear. nose: fresh, forest bed, forest fruits; when opens becoming more sweet. teste: generaly thin - does not seem like 2005, light accidity, some black currant, light bodies with medium a little bit bitter finish. It looks very green. Need to breathe for 2 hours then becoming more fleshy. Tanninas are still young and not well integrated. From 2012. I opened it to fried Orange-agaric mushrooms - nice combination.

Belle surprise... je m'attendais à un vin beaucoup plus unidimensionel. Équilibre irréprochable. Nez très présent et affirmé; la bouche suit où tout est en place, bien velouté avec du fruit à profusion. Finale honnête. Très beau vin.

Looks like there's alot of bottle variation on this one from other's notes. Luckily I got a very good bottle. Nose was classic Bordeaux with lots of black currant, asphalt, cedar, tobacco leaf, leather, earth and some restrained spicy oak influence. My bottle was full bodied on the palate with pronounced earth flavors framing good black fruit. Chewy tannins and moderate to low acidity with a nice finish of red fruit and cedar. May not be too refined, but very good concentration, complexity, and structure for such a cheap Bordeaux.

This was a good bottle, lots of wild blackberry on the nose, green pepper, good chalky minerality, dried herbs, even a little "lake water" funk... hard to beat at the $13 price, but a little thin overall. Fruit is frontloaded, and washes out afterwards. No doubt a nice wine, and a great value -- this is a solid easy drinker.

$10 it's a nice drink, not bad. Very easy to drink, some milld tanins very light . tobacco/spicebox red fruit on the palatte. I am going to let it age another year and try it agian. May be at its peak. Drink up.

Opened and drank without decanting, putting 3/4 bottle aside and drank more several hours later. Violet and medium-clarity, with a little clouding and residue. Mild aroma of sweet tobacco/spicebox with a slight alcoholic whiff. Red fruit on palate with more of the spicebox and alcohol on palate, finishing with moderate acids and a dry nuttiness. Medium bodied (light for a Bordeaux). Good with a variety of foods tried, esp. grilled pork chops w/rosemary. Wine didn't really seem to evolve over several hours except perhaps lost a little of the initial up-front fruit attack, but I didn't mind. Refrigerated remaining wine and will warm it and try tomorrow.
The 2004 and this vintage have both been really consistent over several bottles of '04 and this first of the '05. Fairly high score is based partially on value. I can't see how a sub $15 Bordeaux can be any better than this.

A suprisingly light wine in the context of the vintage. It had a nice Medoc nose and a smooth mouthfeel, but I couldn't help feeling a little disappointed for the relative lack of body. Very good overall, however.

Perhaps it's entered a 'dumb' phase, because on this night it had its normal, beguiling nose of dark cherry, blackberry, and nice funk, but the body was MIA (missing in action). Barely even light-bodied, and only 4 months ago it seemed medium-bodied to me. A pass through the vinturi seemed to accentuate both nose and palate, so perhaps it really is just settling in for a siesta for a few months or years. We'll cook with the rest of this bottle and note its development (or lack thereof).

Solid little wine. Soft cherry and pomegranate, chalky/dusty earth, graphite, green pepper, and leather aspects. Fruit is subpar but the earthy and vegetal layers drive this through. Pleasant and basic mid-week dinner wine.

I will give it the benefit of a doubt and say perhaps it is too early to drink. I did not care about this one at all. Everybody rated it so high, I am not sure why. The best I could say, cheap wine for good reason!!. cut stems of green leaves with no fruits, harsh acidity and unbalanced.

Not as good as the 2004. I bought and drank several cases of 2004, but cannot bring myself to drink even one bottle of this. A little harsh, although my friends liked it. I want something just a little smoother than this. Almost the only 2005 bordeaux's I have liked so far for current drinking are potensac for sure, and I think haut batailley, and maybe lagrange. If people are right about 2005 being a good year, it is not yet visible to me in the wines I have tried.
Of course this wine too is slowly getting better, and maybe that's what most 2005's need, time. But I cannot tell. If you believe RP, its the best greysac since 1982, whatever that means. But in my market it sells for 5-7 dollars less than the 2004, and it just sits there in the store. So the public seems to differ.
added in january 2011: ok after leaving it open a day or 3, this was pretty good. At $16 maybe it is time to buy some, but still it needs air time. 2005 Potensac is much better, but at $30.

Garnet color. Beautiful nose: boysenberry/redcurrant and spiced fruitcake with accents of pickled peppers, tobacco, and cedar. Palate: more juicy red berries framed by bell pepper, earth, and a tiny hint of mocha. Perfectly focused acidity. Moderate/lighter dusty tannins. Moderate length on the finish with a touch of graphite. Very elegant, clean, and delicious. Excellent value. Drink now.

Nose a bit closed at first, it did open up after a few minutes showing dark fruit and an interesting graphite aroma - I wonder if this is what Medoc wines are all about. The moothfeel is, however, a bit too thin. Tannins are medium, short to medium finish. Liked it but could be better.

At first nose was really expressive and fruit-forward, but it became more subdued with air. Mainly dark fruit, some graphite, cocoa, earth. Palate is smoky cherries. Flavor profile reminds me of nebbiolo. Medium acidity and tannins. Finish is somewhat short. 1st day I'd have said 90+. On the 2nd day I give it 88-89, as it's not shown any improvement (maybe deteriorated). Still, a very good value for a $15 Bordeaux. I'll definitely buy more if I get the chance.

Nose has some graphite and cedar, with floral elements (initially some old wood on both the nose and the palate). On the palate this has sweet tobacco, cedar (almost menthol) and red cherries and some graphite. Medium body, smooth, tasty and ready to drink after and hour in the glass or after poured through vinturi. I wish this had a bit more tannins and acidity but it is nevertheless a very good value (at $15) and a good wine. This was still going strong on the third night (vacuum sealed) and it even became a bit juicier, after a little bit of air. Score increased by 1 point. 88-89

Quite nice, though also not quite what I had hoped for. Being a fan of red fruits, this is, as noted by many notes below, primarily black fruit on the nose and palate, with a hint of funky terroir. There are also the leaded pencil and oak notes, with just a hint of vanillin. The 2004 version of this had a noticeable dollop of spiciness, missing from this 2005. Few tannins are apparent, and this was medium-bodied and open for business straight away.

This was marked down from $25 to $12 at the local grocer. I bought two and opened one. Ruby/purple in color. The wine took about an hour to open up and show much. The nose has cherries, cassis and cigar tobacco. some bell pepper with air. On the palate, this is medium weight and easy to drink. Not much complexity but it is good. Not super ripe. A surprising lack of tannins. I will go back for more but I am drinking these up in the next 3 to 5 years.

Decanted 2 hours before drinking. Well balanced wine - with good dark fruits, a dose of herbaciousness and the usual barnyard smells all combining for a classis bordeaux nose. BORDEAUX 2005 / Cabernet rules; 4/5/2006-4/10/2006 (Bordeaux): Commonly sold in U.S. supermarkets, Greysac has a nice nose of cherry and tobacco but the palate, while fruit-driven, is metallic and monolithic. Lacks breed... but aging in oak will likely lift it up. 86-87+

Cheers!
