Double decanted in the AM. Drunk over several hours at dinner.
A deep nose, with more floral perfume than the other vintages of Crichet Paje with tar, , balsam, rose, and dark nebbiolo fruits. Rich, dense and sappy on the palate, yet all in harmony. Rich yet balanced, very deep and powerful yet approachable. This has a great combination of breadth, depth, and palate impact all with balance. Outstanding and will be better in 10 years.

1998 Barolo and Barbaresco Retrospective; 3/24/2018-3/31/2018 (Ai Fiori): I enjoyed this in 2006 at a trade tasting but...how well can you really taste something like this beauty from a small sip in a crowded room...This was my WOTN. By preference perhaps, by a hair... by the fact that it took no prisoners. Certainly the most masculine wine of the flight, maraschino cherry nose, earthy, powerful, stunning... mid is ripe but staying cherry, but more aggressive structure and mineral, earthy core. How can it stay "light" and yet show this strength? I could not stop drinking this. Impressed? more like blown away. It took on 3 Giacosa wines and came away with a win.

1998 Barolo & Barbaresco – A 20-year retrospective (AI Fiori): The nose was dark and earthy, opening with crushed stone, dried roses and undergrowth, but then evolving to show spiced cherry and masses of dried florals. It was wonderfully soft upon entry, displaying fleshy black cherry and plum with saturating earthy mineral tones and a wave of balanced acidity. The finish was long, as the Chichet Paje flexed its remaining structural muscle with hints of grippy tannin, saturating tart cherry, and a lingering note of bergamont. What an amazing wine.

GRANDI NEBBIOLI DA VINOGODI: Cioccolato, frutto scuro macerato. La bocca ricorda la concentrazione e la pesantezza del Sorì Tildin 1996. E' più statico, strutturato e frenato dal legno rispetto ai Crichet moderni.

Leathery, a bit of rustic olive-laden barnyard brett, but not enough to drag the dinner into the barn; you are...drier than you are sweet, you have a garden with roses in your backyard, you are fresh and alive in your tart cherry vibrancy; you are not greying in the least. You seem a bit volatile at your deepest core; but you leverage that and still manage to be bright and aromatic with acid-laden, cranberry and bruised apple aromas on the finish alongside the roses, leather and tiny allusions to milk chocolate -- and even tinier allusions to eucalyptus. In spite of your bruises, you feel young all the same, with at least half of your life before you, or at the very least you still have many years before you are constrained to a walker or God forbid a wheelchair. Your drying tannins and lively acid are proof of your rustic vitality. And the fact that I purchased you from an unknowing merchant, whose former buyer left 7 yrs ago, for only $81.12, who warned me it "those wines stored up there were tasted recently, and most were bad...I gotta warn you this is probably not good", kind of bolsters my belief in Easter miracles. I gave you a 5% chance of showing well, and you rose on the third day (after buying what should have been your dead corpse).

Winter Cabin Weekend; 1/23/2015-1/24/2015 (Cleveland, GA): Decanted 3 hours. Rugged notes of peat and leather mix with wild strawberry and deeper red fruits. Nicely balanced, but it seems like it has more complexity yet to give. This can still benefit from bottle age. Drink now-2020.

Nose started out rather shy. Kept developing all evening, and by the last drops it was really amazing. Showed signs of maturity, but not giving up its real age at this time. Some funk and cheese, barnyard, tar, dark chocolate, dry and dusty cherries, herbs, leather, dry roses and violets. The palate is tight, with dark cherries, some oiliness, good tannins, and high acidity. Long and fine finish. This needs more time in the cellar, but came along nice in the glass, and will definitely improve and gain with further cellaring. 94 points for tonight’s showing by this very fine Barbaresco. (94 – 95+)

2 hour slo-ox. Absolutely magnificent. Earthy, intoxicating bouquet with an absolute seductive palate that was completely round and delicious. This will provide many more years of drinking pleasure. A wine with soul!

Cherry, dark berries, tar, early glycerine which dissapated over time, lingering finish, good mouthfeel. Drank over 3.5 hours. Kept developing, ever smoother tannins. Had a couple of these several years ago when the wine was tight and spiky, and frankly not ready. Am glad to have waited a couple years to open tonights bottle. Still have two more and will wait another year for the next one. It will only improve. Roagna is a favorite maker.

Inizialmente tisana di liquirizia, molto intensa e molto piemontese. Poi escono brodo e menta, note di sottobosco. Bocca bellissima di tannino fitto ma morbido e risolto.

Gorgeous nose of forest floor, wood mulch, licorice and blackberries. Rich and full in the mouth with loads of classic Nebbiolo mouth-drying tannin. A delicious wine that needs 5-10 years to soften. Quite big for a Barbaresco. 92-95 points. Open 4 hours: Richer, darker, silkier. Very savory.

Put in a decanter, changed a lot over 6 hours, putting on weight and developing black fruits and tannin driven cocoa on a palate that never quite caught up with the nose -- which had delicious notes of pine and menthol. Overall, I think I would go back to this in 5+ years, still seems to be mostly potential.

A poor showing and definitely acts past its peak. Nose of lake water, wet hay, potting soil, and red apple skin. Light to medium body. Thins out from 1/4-palate onward, with dull fruit and only subtle notes of clay, graphite, game, and blueberry. Dusty, drying out back end tannins.

From memory: Very elegant wine, with silky tanins. Nice on the nose. Very good length, wich I think is due to the beautiful oak treatment. Though it feels not as concentrated as I would have wished, a bit watery.
