Less Celebrated France WIMPS #164 28th April 2023 (La Trompette, Chiswick): From magnum. A generous pour from another table. Nose is meaty, savoury and spicy with a lovely plum and almond tart sweetness to it. Palate, perhaps showing some of the effects of the wet vintage, is not quite as giving. There is a richness there and a drop or two of soy sauce but not the complexity or length this producer can achieve with better conditions. Lovely to try.

Purchased at the winery on realease and cellared since. Nice tannic hit at first and fully balanced. Smoothed out with air and was quite impressive. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Initially, we judged this to be gone and over with, but even on day 3, this is more fresh and open. Certainly a manly and broad wine and lacks maybe the precision of a Pibarnon in a better year. Still very find - and very much a Mourvèdre-wine #DMtest

Some thought this was oxidized and gone but on day 3 this was apparently better and in good condition. I never found it oxidized but rather polished and modern in style showing notes of dark plum. Ready to go for sure.

Magnum. Rainy, difficult vintage, but as such this is drinking really well right now. Fully evolved and wide open with minimal tannins and expressive iron/game fruit.

Deep red, somewhat opaque with slightly lighter edge. Nose with sweet dark berries and some sweet red berries, some tar and pronounced barnyard aromas. Palate with good concentration, again sweet dark berries and sweet red berries, good acidity, some spice, quite mild tannins with just a tiny bite towards the end, and a berry-dominated aftertaste. More or less fully developed, but developed somewhat in the glass, 89 p. Tannin-wise quite "tame" for a Bandol, but definitely a good effort for a vintage that is supposed to have been problematic in the south of France as well as much of the Mediterranean area.

really hard to gauge - feels like there might be some potential. still tannic in 2104. Will have again with some heartier fare and comment again, as I have 4 more bottles, but this is definitely interesting here.....definitely interesting....it is still showing some edge....

Good Bandol nose, farmyard, earthy, funky. Tannins are quite soft now, and the initial fruit was replaced by darker, more brooding flavours of maybe cedar. Drank easily enough!

This is really showing weird right now. Nose doesn't give much other than a little earth, blackberry, and licorice, and on the palate this is really muddled. Almost seems like an Aussie Syrah. I can't even tell this is Mourvedre right now. Lacks the typicity I find in Bandols and it tastes nothing like it did at Pibarnon in May when I visited and bought the wine at the domaine. Finish is actually the best part of the wine and it's got loads of stuffing, which is remarkable considering 2002 was a mediocre vintage in Bandol. This is going through a rough phase right now, and the only reason I'm saying this is that the wine was much, much better in May. I would leave this alone for some time before revisiting. If you want to pop a 2002 right now, go with Pradeaux, which is showing way better.

Less Celebrated France (WIMPS) (La Trompette, Chiswick, London): Muted decaying red fruits on the nose, quite an intense midpalate with a rising slightly sweet finish. Plenty of life remaining in this. Thanks Mark for sharing this bonus pour.

Wow. Spectacular. Wish I had waited with the rest of the case. Mature. Voluptuous. Feminine. Lovely. Dark fruit. Brooding. Drink now.
