I’m familiar with the producer — this is a standard “the red they serve at charity events” type of wine. A Napa cab you can find at Safeway. So my expectations were pretty low; but this exceeded them. As others have said, it’s not very exciting, but it’s more balanced than I expected, and I found it less of a fruit bomb than something like a Caymus (which also costs twice as much). I did get this bottle as a business gift though; I was happily surprised, but still wouldn’t buy it.

Very basic and relatively simple. Pretty enough flavors, but, lacks concentration and structure and has no WOW factor whatsoever. For the price point and reputation of Duckhorn, poor QPR.

Opened this and a bottle of the 2013 Duckhorn with our Christmas dinner. Roast tenderloin, mashed potatoes, and Brussels sprouts. Could not tell the 2 wines apart. Rich and smooth and tons of vanilla. Tasty but highly engineered? This was my first time tasting Duckhorn, and if tasting blind I would have guessed Caymus. Some will find this over the top, but for me it was not so far it couldn’t be well enjoyed.

served by vinny t. Decanted 30 minutes before serving. Pleasant but modest. Performs below its price point. Not very cab like. Mostly plum. Does not fade in the glass. Can probably remain drinkable for a few more years but I don't see potential for additional development.

90 minute decant. Bought this a year ago after seeing it at Costco, thinking this was high end wine. I was a newb. At $70, the QPR is upside down. We've had sub $40 wines outshine this effort. Live and learn. It's all about tasting as many wines as you can, because you never know until you do. Do here means a generous 88, coming mainly from a very bright note while eating. Prior to food, this would have been more like an 85. Not unpleasant, but our first and last Duckhorn at this price point..

Purple, inky in the glass. Plum and vanilla nose. You can really taste the 12% merlot. More a can blend than a cab. Blackberry and oak. Fruity finish, some acidity.

Improved throughout the night. Early notes were purple fruits with an acidic tinge. More old world than new and definetly slightly out of balance right now. Tannin dominant flirts with too closed. Required 60 min to open up and began to deliver plum, slight mulberry, and cedar wood at the finish with lively acidity. Even at the hour mark the wine is still unbalanced.

Somewhat classic style, endearing, romantic w a touch of modern "clean" feel. The fruit here is a conundrum. Somewhat lacking it is ripeness, and weight, presence. yet it seemingly outlasts the balanced attack, lingers nicely forever.

And finishing this tasting of Cabernet from Napa Valley postponed by the quarantine ... tasting interruptus. This winery does not stop offering calm wines, perfectly tamed with aromas of freshly fried bacon fat, violets and fresh black berries, with a touch of acidity. More masculine in the mouth with structure, grip and a long finish but all in harmony despite its youth. For a medium term.

A classic expression of Napa Valley Cabernet, this wine combines beautiful complexity with rich intensity. Layers of blackberry, huckleberry and black currants are supported by firm, dusty tannins that frame the fruit. On the palate, it is juicy and bright, with luxurious cassis and dark berry flavors supported by notes of fig, cardamom, clove and cracked black pepper that linger on the long, well-structured finish.

Life is a Cabernet! Zoom Tasting: Wines were all double decanted to remove sediment around 1:00 pm and poured into individual mason jars for transport. Jars were stored in cellar until transport time at ~4:30 and then poured into glasses for tasting at 6:00-8:30. The theme was Cabernet and Cabernet Blends. Wines tasted were as follows:
All wines showed well, no dogs here! Group's top three, in order: 1. 2012 Castello; 2. 2012 Raymond; and 3. 2005 Aphrodite. My order was as follows: 1. 2012 Castello; 2. 2009 Gruaud Larose; 3. (Tie) between 2012 Raymond and 2005 Aphrodite.
2016 Duckhorn Cabernet Napa - This wine was a conundrum for me. It was clearly young, and complex, with flavors and nose constantly changing and evolving. A fun wine. It is somewhat hedonistic at this stage, with jammy fruits dominating on the palate, but also showing hints of leather, cocoa and tobacco. The wine also showed some heat and a bitterness I was not crazy about. The nose was also complex with signs of perfume, forest floor and dust, and some spice. I enjoyed watching this wine evolve in the glass, but did not appreciate the alcohol and bitterness that was also present. The wine also seemed to fade as the evening progressed, so not sure if the wine will soon enter a dumb phase, or if the wine does not have the makings of an age-worthy wine. This wine could be a gamble that may payoff big or disappoint....time will tell!

Tasted blind (head to head with Beringer KVR) with no decant. Medium purple. Fruit on the nose is completely obscured by vanilla and spice cake. Palate is stewed plums and cherries with a bit of oak. Tannins are fine grained, finish is modest, but the wine is definitely a bit hot. The oak will likely fade, not sure about the heat.

One of the worst wines i have had recently. There is so much oak and heat here it’s overwhelming all of what appears to be some good stuff underneath. Granted this wine is very young and so with some time it may integrate better but today it’s virtually undrinkable in my opinion.
