for fans of the style. I find the juxtaposition of meaty syrah funk with a saccharine high alcohol palate untasty, but there's nothing "wrong" with the wine. not sure I'd say there's much acidity to speak of

Inky ruby-purple hue with fat, stained tears in the glass. Dense, black fruit aromas on the nose with earthy, liquid-rock character. Bold, minerally-driven cassis and coffee on the palate with finer notes of chocolate, sweet mint and spice. Chewy tannins and medium minus acidity with a touch of heat riding the longish finish. Really impressive Syrah.

Late night pull that was recorked and finished the next day.
After 18 hours of slow ox in the bottle this wine was ready to go. Inkwell with purple rim. Dark fruit cassis with plum and pepper. Full bodied with fine sediment. This wine has come along ways since the massive purple rush teeth staining wine that was a sum of parts. Now fully integrated and in a nice spot for consumption. One bottle left and will hold for 2023+

This is an amazing Syrah. 2 hours in the decanter and it was singing. Beautiful nose of blackberry and cassis, black fruits, chocolate and a hint of menthol on the palate. Nice long finish. I joined the Hensley Wine Club after having 3 of these over the last 18 months. Terrific Santa Barbara Syrah

This bottling has developed nicely since the last pull. Excellent concentration of fruit that has mellowed from the teeth staining early days. It became a bit sweet on day two and lost some of it's layers. Overall a great bottle for the price since it's now trading for $26.33 at Auction.
dark and opaque, it stains the glass with an almost oily viscosity. nose is pungent, of earth, rubber, pepper, tobacco and blackberry. it's chewy, dense, spicy, with notes of dark chocolate, blackberry, blackcurrant and plum. powerful and full bodied with lots of kick, acidity and tannin. long finish too. nothing delicate about this.

Dense purple color in the glass. Figs, plums, smoke, tobacco, and black cherries on the nose. Plums, black cherries, tobacco, and blackberries on the palate. Tannic upon opening, but relaxes in the glass while maintaining a firm structure throughout. Lingering plummy finish.

Big smooth Syrah. Ripe, rich berries and some red cherry to go along with the blueberry and raspberry. White and black pepper some minerals with a solid backbone of tannins. Well balanced and simply delicious. There’s a little heat initially that fades with air, but you hardly notice it anyway with all that beautiful fruit.

PnP, with little change over the course of 3 hours. I would've gone all in as Grenache if tasted blind - loads of ripe red raspberry (almost candied) dominates, with initial background notes of white pepper and licorice. The red licorice takes over mid-palate, joined by hints of tar on the medium finish. Very modern, and not quite what I expected, but the quality is there.

This is Syrah played on a Fender Strat through a Marshall stack. Deep Purple. Colson Canyon provides some powerful fruit in 2016 and Tensley lays down the licks. Power ballad of thick blackberries, mediteranean breezes, olives, maybe a bit of new oak and a little heat. Unavoidable given how ripe the fruit is. With fine grained tannins and a bright tempo to make sure this is not a one hit wonder, but one for the aging. Clapton solo finish, lingering and nuanced.

A beautifully dark and rich take on Syrah. Almost opaque against the light, this wine opens with floral, fresh berry, and spice aromas. Smooth and velvety mouthfeel conceals the rather high alcohol content. Blueberry, cherry, and dried fig transition elegantly to a long finish that reminds of spiced hot cocoa with a hint of cedar.

Best Syrah we’ve ever tasted. Dark, Purple color. Rich dark fruit aromas — figs, plums, black pepper, & smoke. Flavors of blackberry, fig, spice, and currants. Well-balanced, great structure to pair well with spicy foods, e.g., lamb meatballs. Lingering savory fruit finish. Highly recommended.

A few hours of air helps. Blackberry jam, brambles, raspberries, plum, mint, earth, and smoke on the nose. Blackberries, cassis, red cherries, tart cherries, earth, and spice on the palate. Nice juicy acidity, fine slightly grippy tannins, medium-long finish. Rich, concentrated, fruity, delicious. While it doesn't seem very syrah-like, it's just pure pleasure to drink.

Opaque purple wine, with candied blackberry and exotic spices on the nose. In the mouth it’s intensely juicy, bright, and lifted, but there’s a lot of richness underlying it—blackberry and raspberry fruit with cedar and cigar box. Stays delicious through the finish.

Opens with big juicy aromas of blueberries, cherry nibs, blackberry jam, dark chocolate and eucalyptus. On the palate, it is rich and powerful with lots of smooth tannin and acidity in harmony with the ripe fruit flavours. Hints of charred smoked meat, black pepper, and cough syrup round out the profile with a long and lingering finish

Deep, dark, inky, reddish-purple garnet in color, essentially opaque. Full, forward, & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & boysenberries with plummy/jammy overtones of violets & spices/pepper notes, cocoa, earthy/dusty, dried herbs, minerals & a hint of smoky undertones. Disappointed. Wine Spectator put this wine as the #25 most exciting wine of 2018. I'm failing to see that ranking with this wine.
Tmud's description is apt, although I didn't get any meaty Syrah notes, however the brininess and bitter finish was most definitely there. I've got another bottle and will let it rest in the cellar in the hope it gets better with age.

Excellent with prime rib. I've never had a wine year in and out that delivers on such great flavors specific to this Colson Caynon syrah. Very unique and enjoyable. Layered with friut flavors that are balanced perfectly with the tannins and acidity. Great even solo but decant for at least 2 hrs prior to drinking. 1/2 glass left into day#2 and was still holding up just as well as day #1.

Rich deep dark red in color; almost inky. Dark fruit and oak on the nose. Medium viscosity with medium-complex body. Palate is very fruit forward with an emphasis on plum, cassis, and a touch of oak and vanilla. Finish is slightly bitter and meaty with a savory component that lasts for a good 30 seconds. There is also a slight brininess to the finish as well

P: Med body; RNDISH entry with ALMOST swtish frt (approaching threshold R.S.?) met by some astringent pucker (but while keeping in touch with initial frt) as it transitions into the LONG, very, VERY slightly puckerish finish with a swtness & incipient quasi-bitter flatness to the very, VERY fine tannins. Deserves another 6-9 mos, then drinking for 3 yrs more. Seeming, perhaps, a bit disjointed cf'd to my TN of 10/20/2018? [Or, was I just not picking up on that aspect of it... THEN?] 15% ABV; My VG+/EXC-. 94-96 pts Jeb Dunnuck, 94 WS, 93 WA, & 90-93 Vinous (Galloni). [This vendor's $34.99 is ≈ $3 < anyone else listed on wine-searcher.]

This has jumped a point for me since I last visited with it. Just a great bottle - dark fruited with blueberry and sour cherry. A little lavender on the mid palate, with the faintest hint of meatiness. It feels rather modern in style, which I found incredibly enjoyable today

This wine definitely has character. Dark purple color. Nose is inviting with rhubarb, blackberry fruit, violet, and charcuterie board. A bit of brine on the initial PnP blows off after about 15 minutes, leaving the perception of sweeter fruit after the decant. Polished entry, absolutely ready to go now in terms of tannins, velvety texture. Good blackberry fruit and balsamic on the moderate length finish. All in all, quite nice. Pair with charcuterie or ponder alone, there is enough going on to maintain interest. I don't have enough experience with American syrah to comment on windows here, but no obvious reason to wait. 91-92.

Winebar [4 Whites, 5 Reds, & 5 *shared* Bottles] from 10/19/18 (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): N: CLOSED, but seem ripe; Intensity lurking?
P: Med, poss LM, body; Rndish entry with NICE frt met by astringent pucker which loses MOST of the astringency before the LONG, albeit very SLIGHTLY faint, finish with a tangy/swtness to the dusty tannins. NEEDS through '19, then drinking for 4 yrs more. NICELY done! 15% ABV; My EXC-. 94-96 pts Jeb Dunnuck, 94 WS, 93 WA, & 90-93 Vinous (Galloni). [This vendor's $33.95 is ≈ $4 < anyone else listed on wine-searcher.]

This is just outstanding for the price. The meaty, savory nose gives way to dark fruits and sweet tannins. Can’t wait to re-stock next year

There was an acidic chemical streak that made this wine unenjoyable for me.

I went through a case of 2013 and loved every bottle! The 2016 is beautiful! Dark fruit mix with nice cedar notes and medium bodied tannins to create an enjoyable wine at a great price.
