At restaurant Les Avisés in Avize. Disgorgement July 2018 with 4.5 grams of sugar. Just phenomenal, maybe it is due to the place, but I was immediately reminded of the Jacques Selosse Version Originale, which I had here exactly two years ago (TN 02/2022). While not as exuberant, this Philipponnat with the benefit of the fine 2008 vintage and some years of additional aging after disgorgement is cut from the same cloth, vinous and exotic, masterfully sculpted and full of complexity. Clear light golden colour with just a shade of rose, moderate perlage with very tiny bubbles, legs in the glass. On the nose the champagne is subtle with no dominant scent but a kaleidoscope of citrus and dried fruits, sweet pastry, honey and leesy, floral and earthy scents. Ever-changing, pure and just a joy to sniff at. In the mouth the wine is medium-bodied, fresh, very beautifully textured and despite its elegance delivers plenty of intensity on its long, chalky and honeyed finish. If there were any rough edges in the past, they are rounded off by now and acidity, bubbles and residual sugar have come into perfect harmony. IMO the champagne is in its prime with a mouthfeel, that is still youthful and engaging, and the developing complexity of a moderate aging.
From Magnum, this was firing on all cylinders. Very nice nose of brioche, baked apple pie, strawberry jam, and some lemon curd. On the palate, the acidity is fantastic. More baked goods and punchy red fruit. Very nice, pleasant finish. A fine mousse throughout. Still has lots of life left, but in a really good spot. No harm in drinking now.

I think this is gonna be a wine that people love or hate. You really need to appreciate an oxidative style. I will say, Something kept annoying me, and I kept going back and forth btw a annoying floral quality an interesting salinity on the finish.
Maybe it just needs time to knit together. And I did drink it a bit warmer than typical so YMMV

Outstanding. Pronounced aromas of pastry cream, brioche, lemon curd, wet rocks, hazelnut, with some oxidative notes. Fresh acidity accompanies a creamy texture in the mouth, mousse is very delicate. Mid-palate weight of orchard and Meyers lemon, with then layers of bread crust, mineral saltiness. Very persistent and complex. Overall, a great bottle in a nice drinking window. Given oxidative notes, I would not lay down this more for much longer and enjoy over the next 2-3 years.

Served vis-a-vis the Legras Saint-Vincent, this was a different animal. Vertical, quite strict, very concentrated, and while certainly a great champagne, on the day I prefered the Legras for it's charm - call me a sucker for brioche, see if I care. #Henrik&Musse&Buddy

Another 2008 that’s finally entering a nice drinking window. Previous bottles had been tart and slightly severe. Now it’s a gorgeous wine. The lush texture, fine bead and acidity all balance perfectly. I find pear, apricot, lime, and honeysuckle. I can’t wait to try the ‘08 Goisses in a few years.

The blend is 58% Pinot Noir (from Aÿ and Verzenay) and 42% Chardonnay (from Cramant). A portion of the wines are vinified in wooden barrels without malolactic fermentation. Aged 8 years en triage. Dosage is a discreet 4.25 grams per liter. Disgorged in March 2018. Straw in color with golden hues. Showing a very fine and persistent bubble stream. On the nose scents show a mixture of apples, white peach, apricot and golden raspberry with notes of orchard blossoms, almond, fresh baked bread, proofed bread dough, and biscuits with an underlying streak of chalk and river stone. The palate shows great balance. Acidity is high but not overly so and in balance with the body of the wine and the creaminess of the mouthfeel. The effervescence of the wine if fine with pin-prick bubbles playing on the palate. Flavors of pastry, almond, apricot, white peach and apple show well with notes of golden raspberry, biscuit and subtle spice and chalk notes. Lengthy elegant finish. Overall very young and will age quite well.

Pale lemon in the glass. Fine, persistent bubbles. Offering lots of richness on the nose - some tropical notes, some green apple and citrus fruit, lots of brioche and buttery hints. Rich and broad on the palate with a proper string of acid offering a backbone to the wine. Feels a little bit out of sync at the moment, but I see this coming together nicely given 3-4 years. Medium (+), almost creamy finish. Good shit.

Dinner with Sasi (Yan, National Gallery, Singapore): This was a really nice bottle from Philipponnat - especially for a Champagne a level down from their Clos des Goisses. It had a slightly oxidative nose, with hints of white meat, alongside some strawberries, earthy mineral and touch of spice. The palate was showing fairly well even at this young stage, with twists of orange peel around a core of red apples, and some red fruit, all couched in bright lemony acidity, and a lovely backdrop of deep minerality. It had a nice hint of red fruited character and plenty of power reflecting the Pinot Noir in the cepage as well for those who appreciate these things. Very nice indeed. This champagne really had a round, complete mouthful, with lots of depth and great length. Nice now, but will continue to get better with time.

IMW 2018 Champagne - Prestige Tasting (Hyatt, San Francisco): $102, 60 chard, 40 pinot. Pale straw color. Intriguing nose - detailed, with apple, mineral, and brioche. Medium intensity but compelling. Feels 10g dosage - not extra brut (ripe fruit?) - actually 4.25g, high acid (they do full malo - usually goes with lower dosage), not as high-dimensional on the palate, though it is a bit toasty and saline while being not overtly oxidative.
