Fragrant nose with black cherries, red fruit, an herbal note, spices, and cedar. Nice acidity with tart red fruit notes, cherries, and underwood on the palate. Good finish. Late night CNY drinks at Maison Dakota. From magnum. Drank in Conterno Sensory. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour with garnet rim. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of earthen funk, spice, animal, leather. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), medium tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of juicy dark red cherries, dark red plums, dark spice, animal, leather. Medium+ finish getting longer with more air. Very good quality. Still more development ahead for this format.

This was my last bottle of 8 and I must say it was sublime. The color is opaque dark violet with superb class and the aroma was a sublime combination of earth, fruits, leather and the rest taking you to a dreamy landscape of Cote du Py. On the palate, especially well after 45mn, it was simply unbelievable in its own class, a magical presence with a superb texture wrapping every taste bud and literally lifting you to a height of sheer happiness. Splendid but not heavy dark fruits, long long after taste of terroir, and making me remember the very best of Pomerol in many ways. I was literally shocked(and couldn't help) how it reminded me of a very mature and old Trotanoy.(and I kid you not) That superb scent of terroir, lush and yet classy fruits leading into an endless echo of after taste. This was like a suave and yet profound voice singing into your soul. Right in the middle of Coronavirus confinement, this surely made me dream of a much better world and to come. Cheers,

Entered the 2005 Burgundy tasting as a joker and it didn’t really pull it off as a ringer for a high end burg. Green notes on the nose, asperges, light fruit with some blue tones. Good acidity. Great wine in its own right, but it was misplaced here.

Boys at PB (Charlottenlund): I actually guessed Beaujolais 2005 here - also knowing PB, of course. It is tight, firm with a very light and feminin fruit, en danseuse, very primary only with some slight hints of age at the end. Great example of the region.

I am upgrading my rating after 2 years. This is the last one I have and it is tasting BEST EVER after all the bottles of it I was lucky to consume over 6-7 years. Back in 2008-9 we loved these but they were super young and brawny--the stoutest Cru Beaujolais I had ever tasted! It was a real eye-opener, and I learned about ageing Cru which is something I would have never guessed one should do. This is drinking at perfection straight out of the bottle. It is seamlessly blended with luscious fruit, tannins resolved perfectly, enough acidity left to lend itself to drinking alone, but great with food, of course. As a side note, I opened this producer's regular Morgon 2016 a few weeks ago and was slightly disappointed as I found it a tad over the hill. There is no such problem with the Cote du Py. Outstanding bottle and vintage. A wine I will never forget.

88 pts

More expressive compared to the last bottle I opened but still subtle and understated. Beautiful and refined garden fruit, strawberry, cranberry and flowers on the nose. Earthy, red-fruited palate, real sense of place. Moves with elegance and lightness on the palate. To me Foillard is the king of Beaujolais. Grand vin.

This fruit has settled down quite a bit now and is softer and also darker. Still this is hallmark Foillard where soil shows through underneath the fruit and where the intensity of the wine is carried on a light, structured frame. Absolutely terrific.

Last bottle--it's still going strong. Nine years on some of the rather robust fruit has settled down but there remains plenty of it. Each glass just oozes pleasure. Big, yes, but in a luscious sort of way. And to think this was $20 back then.... The evolution in Foillard's approach, not to mention the importer's pricing, have not exactly struck me as positives, but no complaints at all about this bottle.

90 pts

Remarkably youthful. This wine was quite good young, with a snap of fresh wild berries. Still quite good, but it is not a testament to the ability of Beaujolais to improve in bottle. To hold, yes, and even to keep open the possibility of real evolution -- this might yet become more than lip smacking, food friendly drink (and if it doesn't, that quality still makes it worth the asking price). But at this point, 8 years after harvest, not more complex than it was on the first go round.

Tasted at this point, curious to how this was ageing. Surprised to find the tannins still firm and dryness predominant. This is no fruit bomb, but perhaps the next one (there is 1 left) should be decanted a couple of hours. I'll probably give it another year or two before trying this again.

Brett dominated the aromas upon opening--with some carafage this was ameliorated. As it gained exposure to air, more and more fruit came to the fore, up to a point. Compared to a bottle of Lapierre from the same vintage opened a little over a month ago this was restrained and austere. D'Artagnan's 9/9 note discusses the issues raised in aging cru Beaujolais--this bottle wasn't evidence in favor, though that Lapierre was. For me, Foillard's wines just aren't hitting the spot they used to, and that's been the case for half a dozen vintages now. Time to give them a pass?

89+ pts

Color: Garnet Smell: Earth, mushrooms, red fruits, and lilacs Taste: Wild strawberry, cranberry, raspberry, and a melange of other mouth-watering red fruits followed with a lively mineral note. Overall: Outstanding...and I JUST poured this into the decanter. To be honest...this probably is still a tad young...but damn good! At an hour in the decanter the wine has started gaining more depth on the nose and palate. The nose is more rustic and vibrant with the palate gaining an intensity and focus in the fruit core...

Blinds with Kirk and Tooch (Portland, ME): RED 3 Really delicious brown chicu-like nose. Reminds me of julienas.... Palate: light body, good balance, medium acid—elegant. Medium+ purple in glass. Medium tannins (a bit sticky in nature). Maybe 2006, as tannins are not ripe enough for 05.
Post-reveal note on winemaking: confirmed carbonic maceration (someone had info on the wine).

Taste: Cherries, strawberries, and plum.
Overall: A very nice Beaujolais that is just beginning it's life...while enjoyable now I believe that this has potential to improve significantly with time. There are ample tannins, firm acidity, and vibrant fruit that leave me thinking this might be best around 2012-2020.

Medium deep ruby. Nose is showing beautifully with an almost Beaune-like presence of plums, intense earth, flowers and spice. There is a hint of hight toned strawberry that gives this away as Gamay, but I had to go look for it. Medium bodied with deep red fruit and mineral flavors, crisp acids and what seems to be a touch of oaky roundness on the back end. This has resolved much of its tannin yet still tastes very young. Will try again in another year or two but this has really come in to its own and is now a pleasure to drink.

No formal note here -- I had it awhile ago -- but for me it was the wine of the vintage. RE opening, use a lighter or kitchen torch on the wax, and then pull the cork out. It saves a great deal of mess.

It is a lovely wine, with the clean fruit of all of these great 2005 cru Beaujolais. It's balanced and refreshing and not overly tart, and delivers a fruity finish and a mineral crunch with the taste of raspberries and cherries. Update: Almost as good the second night. So nice with food.

Anwar opened this bottle at his home on Friday. Jean Foillard is one of the "gang of four" producer in the Morgon appelation in Beaujolais. He owns 11 hectares those in the highly regarded Côte du Py subregion used to make this wine. 2005 was an exceptional vintage in Beaujolais. His vineyard is high density, the grapes are hand collected, he uses indigenous yeast and tries to avoid racking, fining and filtering as much as possible. The wine is not sulfured. Nice package with a wax cap. Solid red color. This was an elegant and expressive wine. Medium bodied. Notes of sweet red fruit with spice, black cherry, strawberry and hard candy. Great purity of flavor. This is a wine which will change your perception of Beaujolais if you have never had an artisan one before. However, it is true to its roots. My wife correctly guessed this was a Beaujolais when served it double blind. This will hold and most likely improve a bit over the next 5 years. 92 points.

A Bevy of 2005 Beaujolais: Medium ruby. Very Burgundian aromatics-strawberry, raspberry, a bit of caramel. Sappy and very long with gentle framing acidity. I would have loved this were it not for an off, estery flavor right in mid-palate. The wine is so attractive, though, and has so much to it that I would definitely like to retaste to see if I found this component again.
A second bottle a couple of weeks later was very pure without off notes. Again, a lot going on with this wine, and it is the sappiest Beaujolais I've ever had. This bottle showed more black fruits than the first and was quite tannic. I am still not as captivated by it as the Lapierre, but do not deny its potential.

89+ pts

Color: Garnet
Smell: Earth, mushrooms, red fruits, and lilacs
Taste: Wild strawberry, cranberry, raspberry, and a melange of other mouth-watering red fruits followed with a lively mineral note.

Really delicious brown chicu-like nose.

Blind Bourgogne/Beaujolais tasting (CT): Fantastic aromatics with one of the most vivid, intense expressions of cherries I've ever smelled in any wine. It's not overly complex, but just packed full of really polished, sappy red fruited flavours that are kept really fresh and lively by bright acids. Delicious wine.
