  • From a magnum, I shared this with my wine group at an Italian restaurant. Nice wine, a pleasing palate cleaning acidity. As a group we greatly preferred the Barolo, and this wine may have suffered in comparrison. On its own, I think we would have liked it more.

  • At family Christmas lunch, Sunshine Coast. This wine remains a Sangiovese riot/festival of value, quality and personality. Perfect to open after the St Emilion Grand Cru was corked. Delicious, zesty, savoury and very drinkable !

  • This is a really delicious wine, if straightforward. Tannic and acidic bite just on the challenging side of perfect, oodles of juicy red fruit, perhaps a hint of pomegranate. Food-friendly and interesting enough for the nerd even though it fulfils the function of cellar defender. Just wish I had more than only this single!

  • Our rate of consumption of this wine tells the story. It remains a delicious riot of Sangiovese with more maturity and texture plus a touch of earthy gaminess not apparent in early bottles. Quite delicious.

  • From magnum, notes after following over four days open. Even at the end of the bottle, it's still a bit iron-fisted and seems like it's another 5+ years from peak. Inky, dark violet color with a dash of sediment. Black cherry and damp earth on the nose, also integrating a good floral element. Brooding and tannic palate with powerful fruit and fine sage and herbal character. Dry, almost rustic, with a beautiful sweetness on the finish.

  • This remains a great 'house wine' that not only is holding up but now shows even more texture and depth. It remains a friendly riot of Sangiovese character with tart cherries, touches of dark raspberries, autumn herbs and spice and a hit of balsamic that adds zip to the finish.
    Delicious.

  • 3 hour decant (mag decanter). Quite similar to last bottle but this time not quite so modern and more integrated. Now 89+ points.

  • A wonderfully consistent house wine this 2016 Rosso has developed a little more texture and depth with age but remains a friendly riot of Sangiovese character with tart cherries, touches of dark raspberries, autumn herbs and spice and a hit of balsamic that adds zip to the finish. What's not to like - a 'let's stay in tonight' type of wine !

  • This wine sums up the joy of Sangiovese with tart cherry, touches of dark raspberries, autumn herbs and spice and a drizzle of balsamic. There's a smooth start balanced with a brisk finish that crystal out for Tuscan food.

  • Nicely balanced fruit and oak. Reasonable value.

  • Tasted in February, again in April, then today - loved it each time. More garnet than brick-red color, this youthful wine has a few cards up its sleeve, and will no doubt reveal them in time, i.e. not today. The lighter side of medium-bodied, with a cheeky finish, and fresh, cool acidity that adds to the length and classic/traditional build. An excellent example of young, fresh Sangiovese with a bright future ahead of it. 14,5% abv. is already fully integrated. highly recommended

  • Another lovely bottle of this delicious wine 3 nights after a bottle of the 2013 Brunello. The 16 Rosso is true to its origins with bright cherry fruit with a lovely savoury edge without the extra drive and complexity of the 13 Brunello but it stands confidently on its own.

  • Consistently delicious and typical of the best expressions of the appellation this again opened with a deep cherry colour and a nose of dark cherries, fruitwood, thyme and balsamic. The palate reflects these flavours and is brisk and linear with a nice touch of richness balancing the savoury finish.

  • A reminder of why I love the sangiovese grape so much. Bright, tart and lively but very very smooth, this would give plenty of brunellos a run for their money. It's all cherry cola and spicy berries, but with a round creaminess on the finish, which is very long. A genuinely impressive wine. I have a case of their 2010 brunello - looking forward to trying that too.

  • Solid wine, with a pleasing palate cleansing acidity. It went very well with the food we had a NYC French Bistro. From a magnum.

  • Decanted and enjoyed over long lunch for 3+ hrs. Showing great with that lovely espresso nose mixed with red cherries. On the palate silky and fresh, harmony and pure joy with food. A step pricier than average rosso bottles but delivers more.
    Might even be touching 92p.

  • Another very steady bottle of this lovely Rosso that reflects the quality of the year and the winemaking. The previous notes reflect our experience tonight.

  • Another great bottle of this wine showing great consistency and a balance and character that at this level is admirable. There are lovely savoury and fruit characters previous described that remind one of a Tuscan autumn and there is a lot to like about that !

  • Light color. Candied fruit up front. A little tobacco in the finish.

  • A lovely bottle of wine with a dark cherry colour and an expressive nose of cherries, redcurrant, thyme and balsamic vinegar with touches of lavender and earth. The palate is reflective of the fruit and herb characters on the nose with a great whip of acid and tannin that provides life and balance. The purity and transparency are admirable in a wine of this level.

  • 3 hour decant (mag decanter). Nose: Initially ripe red fruit driven soon after opening. Currently shows red fruits with a slight dusty quality but not giving up a whole lot. Palate: Quite modern in style with cherries and some mineral aspects and not much else. The modern aspects are quite surprising given Cannalicchio's Brunellos are more traditional. While somewhat enjoyable don't think I'll be buying more of this as I prefer Rossos that have much more secondary qualities and I don't think age will necessarily bring that out given the style now. In an absolute sense this could be 90 points but given the lack of typicity it garners an 89.

  • The nose was beautiful, even if a bit subdued tonight, showing blackberry, tart cherry, savory herbs, and minerals with dark floral perfumes, and hints of undergrowth. On the palate, I found silky textures offset by a mix of zesty acid, minerals and spice, with ripe blackberry, tart cherry, black tea and a twang of savory herbs. The finish was long showing saturating dark red fruits, lingering acids, minerals, herbs and hints of gruff tannin.

It's amazing to think that this is a Rosso, because it outclasses many producers Brunellos.

  • Another delicious bottle of this Rosso which reassuringly tastes as good out of our home cellar as it did in Montalcino. It is consistent with prior notes with the purity and structure the highlights of this lovely wine.

  • This wine was tasted at the vineyard and was the purest and loveliest of the Rosso tasted on our 2 week Tuscan trip. It remains an excellent example of a minor Brunello with plenty of cherry, redcurrant, thyme and balsamic characters. The finish has a nice grip and savoury character and the price is very fair !

  • Opened about 2.5 hours prior to dinner and slow oxed. Unexpected semi opaque ruby red color. Usually the color is bit lighter for rosso from a traditionally styled producer. Expected to love this rosso from one of my favorite Brunello producers, but I didn't. At least not at this point in its early evolution. For my palate this is a bit precocious, ripe and rich currently. The other happy "problem" for me is my ongoing infatuation with Le Ragnaie's soulful, elegant, weightless 2013 rosso that is stuck in my record player. Now, every Rosso di Montalcino I try has measure up:). I'll drink more 2013 Le Ragnaie Rosso instead and likely end up wishing I had bought more of them. This wine is very nice now to be sure but hopefully it shed some baby fat with another year or three.

  • A delicious bottle of Sangiovese with beautiful overt fruit. There is plenty of red fruit richness with a lovely lavender and thyme character lifted by a touch of dark chocolate and finished with a whip of tart tannin and acid. Lovely Sunday lunch wine.

  • Nose shows gentle notes of gunpowder smoke, cherry, cola, and forest floor. Well-balanced palate, with excellent tannin structure. Soft mouthfeel, with a dry, firm finish. Flavours of leather, dry leaves, black fruit, and nutmeg.

  • Brunello di Montalcino (Kindred restaurant): Soft red cherry, sweet spice and touches of dusty white pepper, a little strawberry as well and a touch of balsamic. Juicy, again strawberry and cherry, a little front of mouth grip, long, easy, quaffable.

  • Another delicious bottle of Sangiovese albeit in a straight foward fruit dominant style. There is plenty of red fruit richness with a lovely lavender and thyme character lifted by a touch of dark chocolate and finished with a whip of tart tannin and acid. Consistent notes.

  • The bouquet was an exuberant blend of tart black cherry and savory herbs, with floral perfumes, hints of animal musk and undergrowth. On the palate, silky textures washed across the senses leaving a coating of ripe blackberry fruit and minerals, which slowly faded to reveal more cherry tones and spice. The finish was long with saturating dark red fruits, minerals, herbs and hints of tannin. This gorgeous Rosso has me very excited to see what the Brunellos of the vintage will be like.
