  • Not had a Bartolo Mascarello for ages & their Barolo prices are too high nowadays, first time trying their Langhe, medium red, lovely nose of mainly red fruits, really good in the mouth with complexity & elegance

  • Bright and very pretty, but the palate on this bottle seemed a bit muddled compared to the previous bottles. Perhaps in a sleepy period? Plenty of material so no hurry for the next bottle.

  • Good intensity, depth and freshness on the nose offering notes of dark, ripe cherry, strawberry, orange peel, dried rose petals, licorice root, gunpowder tea, anise, hints of truffle and young leather, some classic, mineral notes of clay pot together with wet gravel and mild tar. Fresh summery forest floor and mild scents of thyme, oregano and some cooling mint.
Relatively rich on the palate without being heavy. Strong tannins (far from integrated) and a juicy acidity. All kinds of cherry (…) together with blackberry, wild strawberry and cranberry, followed by intriguing clear marzipan notes, bitter orange, some undefined dried herbs, some pepper and cloves, finishing with chalk, hints of raw white mushrooms and bitter cherry.

It tastes very good, but to be honest, I don’t think it stands out as much as expected. Still very nice, of course.
I really like its state between “raw” / “untouched” and polished.

  • La Festa del Barolo: Rare Wine Dinner - Bartolo Mascarello (Legacy Records): The pre-dinner sipper. Usually this would be a champagne but this was a fun surprise especially as you don’t see the Langhe Nebbiolo that often and very often it’s relatively marked up. This is still drinking on the young side of things. Bright and red fruits and lighter bodied and easy in style.

  • Did not make a detailed note, but this was great! Very elegant but intense, typical nebbiolo. Must taste again sober...

  • An off bottle, lots of sediment. Still drinkable, but compared to the next, it was dull and simple.

  • Only barely developed since the last bottle, opened at Penny Roma in San Francisco. Started off with a very pretty nose of cherries, strawberries and drenched in roses. The palate was medium weight red-fruited and at first a little worryingly tannin filled. Luckily I was in a restaurant because as soon as the food started flowing the wine opened into a welcoming flood of bright saturated fruit, long acid balanced finish and a delicious mouth cleansing between bites. Rich pastas (Caccio e Pepe for example) we’re washed away to ready me for the next bite. Dark smoky beef short ribs equally balanced the wine, making every mouthful and swallow a joy.

This baby Barolo is in fine mettle, enjoyably youthful now but primed for a good long life. Wonderful to have some of these to sample while the ‘16 Barolos sleep away.

  • The '16 Langhe Nebbiolo is a fantastic young wine. On the nose, I found the wine to be dark and spicy, with dark red fruit, lavender, menthol, orange peel, and spices. On the palate, the '16 is unusually concentrated and rich for a Langhe Nebbiolo with a beautiful sweetness to the fruit. I found very sweet dark red fruit tones, lavender, and leather, with spice, leather, and dark red and blue fruit tones lingering on the finish. The tannins are firm and actually a bit more noticeable / drying than I recall in the '16 Barolo from Mascarello, and the finish is a bit short. Interestingly, the flavor profile of the '16 Langhe is darker and a bit more rustic than what I recall of the '16 Barolo, with some of the flavor profile on the palate reminding me more of a G. Rinaldi wine. Anyway, this is a fantastic wine and bats far above what I expect of a Langhe Nebbiolo.

  • Similar to previous bottle.

  • When is a Langhe Nebbiolo not a Langhe Nebbiolo? Does this designation even mean anything that matters when you’re drinking the ‘entry’ level wines of a Bartolo Mascarello (or Giuseppe Rinaldi, Burlotto, etc. for that matter)? This is a damn good wine.

Yes 2016 was a good vintage. And it shows here. This wine is powerful, dense, utterly drinkable now - possibly even gluggable. But it has plenty of tannin and acid to age for a decade or two. But drink it now.

This is also a fine window into the wines of Bartolo Mascarello of this decade. They are intense, finely crafted, with just a little hit of sweet fruit on the entry (a trick, because the mid-palate and finish are utterly dry).

The wine: gorgeous nose of red and dark fruit, earth. The palate is mid to light weight, dark fruited, peppery. The finish just goes on and on and on as it slowly fans out. Well balanced, and a good bit of tannins, especially as the bottle was opened, but two hours later, with food, they are barely noticeable. It’s a young wine now but even so is showing the complexity of fruits and earth. Probably will get better. I can’t wait to taste the 2016 Barolo.

  • Bartolo Mascarello Langhe Nebbiolo 2016.
Litt for tight foreløpig, men latterlig bra LN!
    Hyperelegant og ren som få.
    Superb fruktkvalitet med balansert syre.
    Så presist og vakkert.
    Lang med perfekte tanniner.
Kan bare forestille meg hvor bra Baroloen er.

  • A private lunch (Restaurant Bak, Amsterdam, NL): Structured and tannic, rich fruit of Amarena cherries, violets and roses, full bodied (14.5% ABV) with an almost creamy texture, concentrated but transparent, wonderful spicy depth with a pleasant hint of tar, very good length without excessive heat.

  • Wow, probably the best Nebbiolo i had so far. Still very young, needed about 60-90 minutes to open up. In the beginning quite tart, but with time more and more cherries and violets come up. The palate is refreshing and the fine tannins become more pronounced with time. This Nebbiolo ist better than most Barolos.

  • Corked. Had a bad run with the 2010s too.

  • Deep red fruit, spice and tar on the nose, which is quite expressive. The palate is excellent as well, but the tannins need a little time to soften. Very good, and better than many Barolos, but needs a little age. I’ll try to wait a couple of years before trying another.

  • great but so young. no formal notes, needs some bottle age to settle down. try again at the 10 year mark.

  • This is just beautiful. A langhe nebbiolo on an entirely different level. A nose of tar, leather, and earth. There is a distinct spice component as well. The tar and earth follow through the palate, along with gripping, firm tannins and tons of power. This is easily in line with some higher quality barolo out there.

  • Deep ruby color. Super aromatic with notes of sweet cherries, some white truffle, tobacco, tar, also some dried flowers. It's medium bodied, has superb freshness of medium-high acidity and medium+ tannin that is super silky. Excellent length. An icredibly beautiful Nebbiolo.... super complete and elegant.

  • Too young at this stage, quite backwards and tight. Give this some time in the bottle.

  • This was the best Langhe Nebbiolo I have ever drunk. The quality and the brightness of the fruit are extraordinary. Wonderful aromas of red berries and some earthy notes, wonderfully woven together. The tannins are soft to medium and make this wine extremely well rounded. Much better than quite a few Baroli!
