Joel's Tuscan Lunch (A farmhouse in leafy Kent): 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Soulful and pleasurable, with a bright, really pretty nose. Well-integrated and balanced on the palate, with a savoury, slightly drying finish (surprising, given its age). Drinking very well, but probably wouldn't wait much longer.

Was a gift from a friend's cellar a couple of years ago. Based on the TNs here, I figured this would be pretty tired. Much to our pleasure, this was drinking great and neither of us would have guessed this to be 23 years old if tasted blind. Still lots of fruit and some structure. Certainly mature, but this bottle clearly could have lasted a few more years. Was fabulous with home-made beef short rib ragu. Now I kind of wish I had kept it for a more special occasion...

A Year Later in Vero...; 3/17/2021-3/21/2021 (Vero Beach): Opened and was decanting when we arrived so at least had a few hours before we started drinking. It's still quite young, but the oak has integrated and the wine is softening. Very well made.

Ruby red in color. 13.5% ABV. Tremendous nose of red fruits, tar, wet pavement on a warm Summer day and leather. Medium body with ample acidity. Rustic yet charming with enough fruit to keep things interesting. Black cherry, earth, tea and tobacco on the palate. Nice length on the finish. Just a delightful bottle of Tignanello that paired beautifully with take out pasta during the corona virus lockdown. Not the best vintage in Tuscany but well stored bottles will not let you down. Best over the next 1-2 years.

For almost 5 years it has been suggested that this wine was at or over its peak. Just had five bottles a family gathering. Wine was in great shape. I double decanted it 5 hours prior to meal and poured into the glass 2 hours prior to meal. It has great structure solid finish and compares favorably with a tasting that i had at Antinori vineyard in Tuscany.

We are drinking the first of four bottles in our cellar. This wine is drinking beautifully - it still has some time left in its drinking window. Beautiful garnet colour. Hints of plum, chocolate, pepper and lemon.

Not a great bottle, but a very good bottle. Dusky plum-garnet in color, soft mouthfeel-with sweet, clear fruit, good structure - nice aromatics. Probably would have benefited from more air, but I'd view this as fully mature if not a touch past. Open and drink.

Medium-dark crimson color. Very tertiary Bordelais nose, with musty sous bois aromas, kumato tomatoes, and slate. The palate has the intense mineralic flavors of rocky soil, though there's not a great deal of fruit remaining here. This finishes moderately long, with still jaunty acidity. I worry that this is starting to lapse into the kind of dry fruitlessness which afflicts Italian wines from the more austere vintages such as this one. I'd drink up any remaining inventory in the near future.

- Crimsom color - Drinking beautifully with chimichurri rib eye steak. Crimson colour with fruit nose. Hard to believe this gem was 18 years old. I think it still has years left. Makes me sad that this is my last bottle of the '98 vintage. Bravo!

Medium dark garnet, faint orange tinge. Black & red cherry bouquet with complex nuances of warm earth, Maraschino cherry, orange peel, cherry pit, tobacco, black tea, iron filings, leather, pencil lead, dried herbs, pepper, spice & burnt toast, slight hint of barnyard notwithstanding. Medium plus bodied, quite deep, intense, moderately concentrated, supple, smooth black & red fruit flavors with no sign of tertiary nuances yet; still some gently firm tannins with powdery extracts & notable medium soft acidity in the background maintaining fairly good harmony. Long sustained finish. (91.5)

Tuesday Night Double Blind $40+: Dark core, muddy rim; soy, fennel, cooked dark fruit, prune, sandy; dark fruit on the palate, large scaled, very ripe, a bit non-descript as to what it is; this bottle was past, not great.

(Tasted Double Blind) On pop and pour this revealed intensely ripe red fruit combined with an earthy, mature secondary/tertiary note of barnyard. As the wine breathes in the glass more emerges: macerated black cherry, maraschino cherry in syrup, wet hay, dusty soil, leather, pipe tobacco, black tea, seared pork, iron shavings, beef blood and old furniture. Given the ripeness of the cherry fruit this must be warm climate and/or a warm vintage. While initially I was considering Bordeaux or the Southern Rhone, when re-poured and evaluated under better light I realized there were no pyrazines for Bordeaux, there wasn't enough alcohol and too much tannin for the Southern Rhone. The ripe cherry fruit, secondary notes, elevated tannin and notable acid along with a medium plus cherry pit finish pointed me toward aged Sangiovese, and the overall profile reminded me of Tignanello. Guessed '93 Tignanello.

Westchester Wine School - Premium Wine Tasting (Bar Lees, Mamaroneck, NY): Drank at WWS tasting vs a 2008 version. Pale red with some bricking. Lots going on in the nose: Earth, barnyard, green peppers (a bit vegetal). Mostly tertiary elements, with fruit somewhat faded. A bit on the thin side and lacking balance. Still plenty of tannins but doesn't have the fruit to balance the wine. Mostly tertiary in style now, lots of sediment. Drink up

Opened (but not decanted) 2 hrs before dinner. Deep red color, no sign of age. Restrained nose, on the palate well integrated tannins, still some (dark berry) fruits left. Basically good Balance but there was a disturbing non-integrated acidity on the palate, maybe a bad bottle however a bottle we had recently had a similar fault. Good bottles might add 2-3 points. Time to drink up.

Tasted in a vertical with the 1995 and the 2004, this was the consensus favorite, though I preferred the 1995. Dark maroon color. This was opened (but not decanted) two hours in advance and consumed over the next four hours, during which time the wine (like the 1995) changed noticeably several times. On opening, this had a funky, meaty aroma, with a heady smell of stewed tomatoes. With some air, a subtly minty note emerged. The overall profile of this is much drier on both the nose and the palate than the 1995, with dark berry and licorice flavors featuring prominently. Tannins on this one are slightly more astringent than on the 1995, but this still gives the impression of being very near full maturity. Would give this another three years at the outside end.

Agree with Wineguy76, this is a "elegant, mature super Tuscan". Highly opaque, mixed ruby/garnet color. A lot of rim variation. No significant sediment. No flaws. Low to medium fruit and earth intensity. Soft nose. Soft dark berry aromas - cherries, plums, strawberries, blue and blackberries. Some herbs and spices. Poured a glass first, a little more harsh than the second and subsequent glasses which were decanted. Dry. Low acid and tannin. Medium minus to low alcohol. Medium finish. Very drinkable. I think beyond peak, but, reflects the character of a well aged classic. Beautiful. Ready to drink. Paired well with filet mignon, spinach salad with Galatoirre's crab dip, and potato fennel gratin. Sides of zucchini cakes with smoked trout.

Elegant, mature Super Tuscan displaying a clear, deep brick-red core with shades of orange on the rims. Medium to full bodied wine with fragrant aromas of cigar box and fig. On the palate a soft and silky texture revealing multiple layers of orange, dried fruit, cedar and spice. Well integrated, smooth and ripe tannins leading to a long velvety finish. Excellent overall balance and a wonderful bouquet. This is yet another superb Tignanello that is at its peak now and should continue to provide pleasure in the glass for another three to five years.

Nice but not outstanding tig. Nose of overripe cherries, cherry compote, old oak cabinet, and wood varnish. Palate features classic sour cherry notes and has abundant refreshing acid. Nice showing but I would prefer less ripeness and more complexity.

This is not a "oh my god" sort of wine. Yes, it reeks class and complexity, but you sort of have to work to get there. On opening, this is still a little tight, very dry, with some air this softened a little. Nose is reasonably muted, complex, but light notes of tobacco, fig, tar and only a little fruit, pretty similar on palate lots of dry extract and flavour, but its complex rather than fresh. There is a lot of complexity. Overall a really nice wine.

An open red to dark fruit nose with meat, blackpepper, violets, graphite, stone fruits, mint chocolate and cacao powder. Medium bodied and chewy palate with good intensity of red-toned fruit and healthy grip of tannins. Slight volatile lift, gravelly nuances, liquorice and toasted oak. Refreshing but a bit tighter finish of good length. A fine vintage! Drinking already, but will further improve.

uncorked and decanted an hour before serving. garnet color with orange highlights. the nose is spectacular, it starts with cherries that are gradually becoming black cherry jam, prune, green and black pepper, vanilla, cigar box, mineral hint of enamel. in the mouth the tannins are dense but smooth and sweet great minerality that is balanced well with the softness, long finish. great wine did not disappoint expectations.

89-90 pts

Medium deep garnet color with slight bricking. Nose very restrained early and only opened up a bit 4 hours after decanting. Some prune and sour cherry on the nose with a hint of spice. Flavor profile complex and layered. First tea and burnt toast, then tar and sour cherry then cranberry and spice on the aftertaste which lasted a good 45 seconds or more. Subtle rounded edges on the flavors despite some ripe tannins remaining. It went better with food and quite well with my homemade beef stroganoff.

Nice dark plum color. A little bricking. Nose was muted tart cherries, but opened up in an hour. Fruit was struggling to come out on the taste. Drank out of bottle. Needed to be decanted. Next time I will let it decant for a couple hours. I have had much better vintages and the differences are remarkable. 1995 and1997 were much better.

Color: Deep red, with slight bricking Nose: Black currant with licorice Taste: Overwhelming licorice, with plum, tobacco, and leather.
Decanted for one hour before serving. A little disappointing, this has lost much of it's fruit upfront, and what is left is a lot of licorice and pencil lead. The finish is smooth, but not as long as other tigs in different vintage.

Crimson color with slight bricking at the edges. Earth, cigar tobacco and subtle dark fruits on the nose. Very well balanced and a well integrated mix of flavors on the palate with plum elements framed by a nice earthiness. Almost Bordeaux-like. Nice finish. Deep red colour, tones of brick on the rim. Starts mainly in the direction of leather and barnyard and does not give away much. Nice fruit, really mirrors the nose and does not give up much. Oak is there, a bit too much if it should have been perfect for me. Good body, nice acid and good length.
With some time in the glass the cherries enters the nose as well as the palate, together with some dark red berries and hints of tobacco and the fruit kind of turns to a bit sweeter tone. The oak improves as far as balance goes. This appearance of the oak might improve with more time in the bottle, but would have liked to see more fruit present for that to happen as well. And I cannot really sense that it is in a shy state at the moment either, the complexity of other vintages is just not there. Still I would prefer the -95 of that decade, given today's state that is. I'll keep a bottle for curiosity, but I would say it is time to drink these - but they do not need to be gone by tomorrow in any sense.

Acker Merrall Inaugural Chicago Auction (Trump International Hotel): Big and brooding, surprisingly tannic and backward for a 13-year old wine that is mostly Sangiovese. More black fruit on nose, a bit more red fruit on palate, both also starting to show some emerging earthiness.

Telltale Italian, warm up for a Bdx pair (Cos and GPL) and I'm glad this came first. Rust and enough fruit still there to keep it interesting. Bing cherry, orange rind, currant, and resolved tannins. Good to catch this now. First wine of three paired against a Flannery rib cap. While the bigger Bdx were the better pair, this showed as a great food wine.

This wine was double-decanted and brought to a walk-around Super Bowl party tasting. Prior to decanting back into the cleaned bottle, the wine saw only a few minutes in decanter. It was subsequently presented and ultimately consumed by tasters over approximately two hours. My tastings were done serially during this time frame. Deep red/garnet robe. The nose opens over the first hour to show moderately intense aromas of plums, black tea, sage and earth. Medium-to-full-bodied on the palate, with medium residual tannins which are still a bit coarse. Tightly wound on the palate, with black fruit and mineral flavors. The middle palate is full and the medium-length finish ends with a whiff of heat. Drink now-12/18.

Initially popped and poured. And it was unpleasantly muted. After +/-3 hours in the bottle it opened-up quickly in the glass (10 minutes or so). Ruby color, no signs of ambering. Aromas of dark cherry, plum and some blueberry, with hints of dried herbs, leather and a touch of eucalyptus/mint. Medium bodied with smooth tannins and ripe fruit. Medium-long finish that remains fresh throughout. Nothing wrong with this wine, but nothing to get exited about either. It did have some of the Tignanello signature I like so much, but was slightly tired. Not worth the EUR 65 that was paid for it. Not anywhere near the '99, '01 and '04 I've had. Drink now.

Youthful appearance in the glass, no bricking. Cherries, plums, herbs, creamy oak and pepper on the palate, with a little cocoa and just a hint of leather. Drank with Bryan Flannery wagyu burgers seasoned with basil, garlic, and salt. The food really brought out the fruit and pepper aspects. By no means over the hill, about 50:50 primary : secondary right now.

Tastes like a generic, internationalized red with plenty of ripe red and dark fruit, toasty elements and a mouthfeel that's soft and velvety to the point of feeling flabby. Certainly drinkable, but there's nothing of interest here or anything that sets it apart from a lot of cheaper wines in this style. For the price this sells for, it's a joke.

Definitely starting to show some signs of age - some bricking around the rim and a little bit of fading of fruit on the palate. Nice nose of limestone, creosote, dried leaves and oregano. Not a ton of fruit on the palate, nice acidity and nice texture with flavors quite similar to the nose - more ont he mineral/dried herb side. Medium long finish. Went quite wel with a spicy red sauce on a cold winter night, but not giving as much pleasure on its own as I would have expected. Drink 'em if you've got 'em!

5th Annual Truffle Dinner (Home, Toronto, Canada): Medium-dark ruby colour. Aromas of blackberry, herbs, cocoa, black plums. This was pretty disappointing for me. I had high hopes since I love the 04 Tig - that may be the problem... The nose had cherry, tobacco and wet earth aromas. The palate had red fruits, tobacco and tea flavors. Not really what I was expecting or hoping for. Even a couple of hours in the decanter couldn't bring it around. Good mouthfeel and a medium length finish. I just wanted more than it had to give I guess...

A juicy nose of red berries, graphite, cedar and some floral and earth notes coming through as well. Intense and flavourful on the palate with the tannins needed food to be tamed. Clearly very good and noticeably of a similar bloodline to the '88 had by its side. It was approachable now, but will be better in 4-5 years.

Very dissappointed with this bottle. I have consumed 7 prior bottles over the years that were all excellent. This one was not. Little to no nose. No fruit, some structure. I drank this over the course of two nights. While it was not like the prior bottles, I think it was mildy TCA. This would explain why it was still drinkable but just OK.

Upon opening and decanting it had the color of light strawberries. Not much other than a bit of tobacco on the nose. Could taste the sangiovese, but not the CabS. 30 minutes in the Cab was evident on the nose with berries and even more sangiovese on the palate. At 60 minutes the sangiovese was coming on and it was getting fruitier. At 90 minutes and beyond it was well balanced and just plain excellent. Had with lasagna.

Poured at dinner with Karen. We celebrated paying off the bank last night! Five years ago I purchased my uncles interest in our family's firm--yesterday was the last payment! Yippee!! I have to say that in 2000, summer 05 seemed a long way away.
So, to celebrate we drove to Ballard, a hip area once home to the scandanavian community--now overrun with young couples and hip 20 somethings; and dined at voltera www.volterarestaurant.com
Of late, they have had several hot reviews, so off we went. Man where did the ac come from, the place was chilly! Inside we bumped into good friends of my parents that usually dine every Friday at Cafe Juanita--seeing them was a good sign as they are rather selective eaters and have a massive barolo and piedmont collection.
Oh the wine, well upon opening, I felt it was quite ready. A fragrant perfume of earth, damp earth were present. There was a fair bit of drying tannin and loads of cherry and chocolate on the palate. Initially, I thought it early maturing, however over the night and tonight with dinner, I found it rich, fuller bodied and pleasurable. One can drink now or hold for 5-7 years.

Alcohol and a little oak on the nose overpowered any fruit. Lots of fine tannins and acidic. This all overpowered the fruit (cherries?) that were there. Difficult to taste though but a wine for the future. Tried later in 01 and was more balanced - would probably rate 93

My last bottle. Nose was very tertiary with still some nice ripe fruit. Mouth was very leather-like, with tobacco and soft tannins. Great wine!
I wouldn't tend to wait much longer to drink this wine. It has reached its peak but should last for a few years without worries.

Medium dark garnet, faint orange tinge. Black & red cherry bouquet with complex nuances of warm earth, Maraschino cherry, orange peel, cherry pit, tobacco, black tea, iron filings, leather, pencil lead, dried herbs, pepper, spice & burnt toast, slight hint of barnyard notwithstanding. Medium plus bodied, quite deep, intense, moderately concentrated, supple, smooth black & red fruit flavors with no sign of tertiary nuances yet; still some gently firm tannins with powdery extracts & notable medium soft acidity in the background maintaining fairly good harmony. Long sustained finish. (91.5)

Drink up

Basically good Balance but there was a disturbing non-integrated acidity on the palate, maybe a bad bottle however a bottle we had recently had a similar fault. Good bottles might add 2-3 points.

89-90 pts

Flavor profile complex and layered. First tea and burnt toast, then tar and sour cherry then cranberry and spice on the aftertaste which lasted a good 45 seconds or more. Subtle rounded edges on the flavors despite some ripe tannins remaining. It went better with food and quite well with my homemade beef stroganoff.

Nothing wrong with this wine, but nothing to get exited about either. It did have some of the Tignanello signature I like so much, but was slightly tired. Not worth the EUR 65 that was paid for it. Not anywhere near the '99, '01 and '04 I've had. Drink now.

Currant, leather, smoky mineral and chestnut nose. Full-bodied with moderate tannins; medium-long, gripping finish.

Alcohol and a little oak on the nose overpowered any fruit. Lots of fine tannins and acidic. This all overpowered the fruit (cherries?) that were there. Difficult to taste though but a wine for the future. Tried later in 01 and was more balanced - would probably rate 93
