  • 1989 Château de Pitray

    Give this one some air.
    Smooth , smooth , smooth.
I started sipping this one right away and mistakenly thought it was dead.
-Of course the cork came out in three pieces -even with the utmost of care, and the fill level had descended a few centimetres and the capsule was soiled with gunk...
But given enough time , three hours in this case , this wine proved me wrong!
It bloomed and gave me nothing but great milk chocolate , herbs and a hint of minerality.
A thirtytwo year old pleasure to enjoy!
    Be patient, be patient.

  • 1995 Château Le Bon Pasteur

Far more complex than I first expected.
I decided to treat myself, Fathers Day Eve to a "nice" bottle from the cellar, and I picked well ...returning the 2006 "Ch. Something or Other" that I initially pulled - that probably needed more time anyway- and experiencing something really special!
I must admit that I did experience cork failure... how frustrating, it crumbled extensively under my waiters screw- Yikes. I wasn't expecting good things. I was wrong.
    The stage was set .
After a proper decant, a hint , just a hint of stink and bacon grease hiding in a really well structured nose...just opening up nicely!
Taste- Dusty leather , green tobacco leaves... but then this really nice sweet and sour thing unfolds... like when your mother made fruit preserves and added the sour pectin "Certo" in my memory taste buds - overpowering the fruit but not the fruit sugars, the fruit sweetness...in layers.
After a couple hours decant, the dusty leather is now polished with your dads Kiwi shoe polish and pushes up up next to the mixed fruits that are now exerting themselves, with almost a saccharine sweetness, but creamy as other reviewers have mentioned, definitely creamy despite all the nicely conflicting flavours. So well balanced !
It just keeps getting better with more air.
I can't complain , pretty nice honest 91rating for a 26 year old with a nasty cork. Still drinking great!
This aint no Calli red , (although I like those too).
    Cheers

    Taken on a new complexity.
Deep garnet colour. Clean nose... bright.
    Still holding up well !
The fruit has clearly diminished but there is still acidity that plays well with a beautifully sweet finish.
Tobacco, flint, full mouth feel. Still big and juicy !
Aged so gracefully.Great for a 23yr old Aussie.
Fine winemaking, great value, looking forward to my last 1998, in a few years!
