Stunning mature Rutherford Cabernet. A thoroughly interesting nose on this bottle that took us for a ride out of the gate, from fruit forward to barnyard to intensely floral over the course of several hours. Would not have guessed this was a '97, excellent structure and fruit shining through on the palate. Drink or hold.

Exquisite bottle perfectly stored. Seriously singing after 4 hour slow ox. Plum, blueberries, raspberries. Oak is there but restrained. Allspice, chocolate. Only slightest hints of tertiary flavor. If you really search, there’s a hint of forest floor. Plenty of fine grained tannin left. This wine can go the distance. Interested to see how this continues to evolve over 10 more years, but I doubt I’ll have the patience to wait with my other bottle.

To me trailside always tastes like chocolate, and good god is this characteristic of trailside. Chocolate nose, chocolate palate, purple-chocolate color. This chocolate is chocolatey chocolate cabernet.
It’s really not bad it’s just singular.

The nose reveals, gummy, ripe, floral; blackberries, black raspberries, black plum, dark cherries, black plum, raspberries, touch of blueberries, mulberries & boysenberries. Fruit cola melody, dark chocolate, mocha, caramel, dark spice, softly layered; clove, nutmeg, understated cinnamon & vanilla, anise, steeped black, fruit tea, bay leaf, sage, mint, dry crushed rocks, limestone, dry twig, volcanic, dry clay, dry top soil, forest floor, mushrooms, anise, graphite, fresh & dry tobacco with candied, brightly floral, fresh & withering; dark, red, purple & blue flowers framed in mixed; wild, greens and fields of lavender.
The body is elegantly, round, velvety, ruby & creamy. The tension, structure, length and balance are at their high point. It glides beautifully with juicy fruits. This is a gleaming example of why I love well aged & stored Heitz. Gummy, ripe, floral; blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries, black plum, plum, raspberries, touch of blueberries, mulberries & boysenberries, dry pomegranate & cranberries with dark raisins, dates & a little fig. Dark fruit melody cola, touch of bandaid/VA, dark chocolate, mocha, caramel, dark spice, dark expresso roast, softly layered; clove, nutmeg, understated cinnamon & vanilla, anise, steeped black, fruit tea, bay leaf, sage, mint, dry crushed rocks, limestone, dry twig, volcanic minerals, dry clay, dry top soil, forest floor, mushrooms, anise, graphite, fresh & dry tobacco with candied, brightly floral, fresh & withering; dark, red, purple & blue flowers framed in mixed; wild, greens and fields of lavender. It’s has perfect round, warm, rain shower acidity. The finish is everything I look for in an aged, Napa Cabernet. The 97 Trailside has flushed out into a dark, incredibly well knitted, triple balanced in fruit, earth & herbs, yielding into dark spice with a little palate heat on the long set & persists longer than minutes.
The 1997 still has 10–15 years of good drinking ahead. Properly stored of course.

Not sure if this was over the hill or the bottle just hadn't been in ideal storage conditions. The fruit didn't seem faded. If anything it seemed overripe and a bit sour. On the back end there were some harsh, bitter tannins. It's like the components fell apart. Could have been the result of oxidation or heat damage.

Shame on me. I had a bottle last year and thought this vintage was on its last legs. I was quite wrong. Pulled another one I have to drink tonight. Obviously The one last year was a bad bottle, or not stored well, rare for Heitz. Tonight's bottle had excellent tannin's, in fact we all agreed it should have been opened earlier than 2 hours before drinking. We let it sit and went back to it after 4 hours. Color had no sign of its age, still dark cherry in color, beautiful nose, could not stop smelling the earth and Cab fruit. On the palate earthy, almost a slight sweetness on back end with ever so slight mint that you get in Martha's vineyard. Wish I had more.

My last of several. Unfortunately this once beautiful wine is over the hill. A sad day. The 97's were gorgeous. The nose was still there but it tasted like sour cherries. I let it breath for 2 hours and wonder if maybe it oxidized. Sometimes older wines have a short window one you open them.

A relatively more typical napa cab than some of our experiences with Heitz would have left us to anticipate-still probably five or more years left in this one-tannins not quite silky but perhaps an 800 -1000 thread count if we are using a silk sheet analogy-lengthy and complex finish-wish I had more of this one. Still remember visiting napa in 1971 when Joe was working out of a trailer and there were pickups with shotgun racks as the preferred Napa vehicle. Took a case of 67 Martha's home as our first brush with napa and surely wish I still had one or two from that case.

Medium red, showing its 15 years of age. Beautiful nose that only improved as the night wore on. Quite BDX-like with its earth, cedar bough and other "woodsy" notes. Medium body. Black cherry and red currant flavours and still quite structured. In a good place now but clearly demonstrating Heitz ability for long ageing.

Medium dark ruby with no hint of age in the color profile. Decanted and left to breathe for more than 3 hours this was wonderful, especially with grilled lamb chops. Nose is rich and complex, with notes of the typical Heitz herbaceousness, mint, spice and dark fruit. Oaky presence it felt as well on both the nose and palate. This wine has lots of life left.

Caramel tones on the nose. Deep flavours, plenty of complexity. Lots and lots of stuff going on. Cassis, blackberry flavours. Tannins are still present suggesting that a long life awaits.

Last Event of 2010 (Luis, Edina): Very drinkable now and I would not hold these anymore. Dried herbs, spices, floral and raspberries. Soft tannins and very little oak on the nose or palate. No way to guess Cali Cab on this one blind.

Mystery Wines done Blind, Mini Offline: Bordeaux, Napa, Sonoma, Spain (Luis' Place): Very dark red color with 1-2mm clear meniscus. Splash decant, tasted blind. The nose shows nice fruits, cassis, blackberry, earth, a hint of meat, anise, somes herbs and menthol, touch of carmel emerges later and the meat and anise seems to fade. The palate has good intensity, medium full body, black fruits, herbs, spice, nice acid, fine grained tannins that are still a bit astringent, peppery on finish. A little heat on the finish, long finish. This struck me as about 9-10 years old, and california cab. This has a lot of life left and decanting is still advised.

New World Wines - Blind (Jace's House - Bethesda, MD): Nose featured expressive dried leaves, subtle cassis, rose petals and pipe tobacco - a wonderful balance between dried earthiness and elegant red fruit. The palate was lithe yet powerful with cassis and sour cherry woven together with earthen tones of cedar, spice box, and dried tobacco leaves. The length of the palate was tremendous and this was my clear favorite of the night.

Opened and left to breathe for 30 minutes. Surprisingly dark in color with a very aromatic nose of cassis, anise and leather. Medium to full bodied in the mouth with lots of blackcurrent and dark cherry fruit. Nice complexity with secondary characteristics of tobacco, leather and earth. 30+ second finish with integrated tannins. This wine is not huge but is refined and elegant. It shows great balance and freshness and drinks like a much younger wine. Seems to have several more years left which bodes well for my one remaining bottle! Great wine from a great vintage.

Wine had a sharp nose out of the bottle, but quickly began to show its fruit. After sitting for a bit in the glass, it developed a classic napa cab nose, and the taste really showed what 1997 was all about for napa wines in terms of a harmonious balance that has aged well. While some of my other napa cabs from 1998 and 1999 are showing that they are past their prime, the 1997 Trailside continues to drink extremely well.

Party at Leo's for the Gelbs. Saxum, Pegau, Jaboulet "La Chapelle," Usseglio, Marcassin and more. (Leo's.): Aromatically it's rather nice with its black cherry, cedar, herb, mint and cocoa notes. However, it doesn't really follow through on the palate. Initially it shows pleasant enough, with similar flavors as aromas, but is rather lifeless. It's sort of a red, inoffensive liquid. With air, however, the fruit receded and the wine thinned out and got a bit bitter. B/B-. From magnum.

I've been waiting to have this one with my Brother in Law and we cracked it this evening. Very brief decant (15 minutes?) and it was ready. One of the best cab's I've had in a long time and I think it still has a few years left only because there si a faint heat signature at the very finiish. Not off-putting at all, only an indicator of a few more years of viability. We just drank it with plain italian bread becuse its really a wine you just drink like a meal.

Opened New Years Eve with some friends. I was not expecting much out of this wine but was wrong. It was very good. Much more balanced than I would have thought. The oak has subsided and the fruit was bright but not even close to over the top. Surprisingly fresh with a long pleasing finish. Almost Bordeaux like as maybe a Pauillac might be.

Beautiful if slightly subdued nose of berries, cassis, burnt matchstick and sous bois. Mature cab, nice balance, sweet purple berries, plums, camphor, earthy. Distinct style. Nice long finish, a little tannic, gives the wine some punch. Excellent wine.
