Fourth bottle from a half case purchased at auction in 2021. Attractive nose, aromatically very much like a white Pessac-Léognan, fruit and vegetal notes, minerality and oak; well-balanced palate, with nicely integrated acidity, good weight of fruit and gentle bitters; the finish shows some sweet oak but remains hard and herbaceous and a bit hot. Bottle variation?

Crisp, notes of citrus, lemongrass, goose berry and tangerine. Good persistence through mid palate. Chalky and smooth on the finish. Excellent SB from Spottswoode

Third bottle from a half case purchased at auction in 2021. This now seems to have found its balance, the acidity (still jarring twelve months ago) has integrated better and now actually feels quite soft. There continues to be a herbaceous streak on the nose and the palate, but it is nicely wrapped in ripe, fleshy fruit. The finish displays an attractive hint of sweet oak. Lovely wine with the stamina to last and develop.
17x Spottswoode (2x SB, 5x Lyndenhurst, 10x Estate Cab): Two Spottswoode Sauvignon Blancs side-by-side. While these are not the most complex Napa SBs, but they show quite light, airy and well-defined. The 2017 (92 pts) won by a hair thanks to more freshness and the stronger intriguing spearmint aroma vs a fruiter, creamier 2018 (91 pts). All in all, these are good for any summer evening but without the exceptionalism of the best Napa SBs – the benchmark here is Dana’s Sauvignon Blanc from the Hershey Vineyard.
TN: Less clean nose than the 2017 with some minty, herbal and minerality components along some slight oaky notes. On the palate this is creamier than the 2017, very pleasant texture. Good weight from the attack through the finish. More fruity, some fresh orchard fruit, some tropical hints, rocks, some minty notes. Overall very pleasant and round with a high but well rounded acidity. A touch of oak on the palate too which still has to integrated a bit.
Decanting: Not decanted, no decanting needed.

Spottswoode tasting (Widder (Meilen ZH)): Spottswoode tasting with proprietor Beth Novak-Milliken with 10 vintages Spottswoode, 5 vintages Lyndenhurst, 2 vintages Sauvignon Blanc. All bottles were opened at 15.00 and briefly decanted for the event which started at 19.00. Main observations were: i/ The flagship Spottswoode was typically light and elegant for a Napa Cab with 2013 being the wine-of-the-night (closely followed by 2014, 2019 and 2020, ii/ the Lyndenhurst tends to be rather extracted and lacking mid-palate presence, although the 2019 broke this rule and was towering over the rest. Brief history, snippets from Beth and complete list of wines included in the tasting story.
Tasting note: Less pronounced goose berry fruit but with some tangerine and lemongrass in the mix. According to Beth this was a “picture perfect” vintage. Indeed the palate was finely textured and relatively soft, but also lacked freshness. I preferred the 2017.

Second bottle from a half case purchased at auction last year. A blend of 40% Napa and 60% Sonoma. Fermented in roughly equal parts stainless steel and French oak, with a small proportion of Hungarian and Austrian oak, concrete and clay, 14.1% ABV. Very fresh and crisp, impeccable varietal expression, lovely complexity, but also with a distinctly green streak on the nose, and slightly jarring acidity on the long but quite tough finish. I am sticking to my opinion that this needs time to become harmonious - but I am not sure that it will. Wait and see.

First bottle from a half case purchased at auction recently. Impeccable varietal typicity on the nose, bright and pure and focused, with a complex fruit expression (lemon, lime, gooseberry, green apple), grass and acacia, and a hint of vanilla from the wood; the palate is crisp and still youthfully tight, with a stony minerality, quite textural with noticeable bitters; very good resonance and length. Excellent but needs more time to develop its creamy richness. Revisit in 2024.

Not as powerful as Bevan Dry Satck but more closed to elegant side. Although the tropical note was milder, the stronger mineral hint and acidity provided the cleaness and freshness of the wine. A great surprise was that this tranquil balanced wine was supported by a solid body. It is no doubt a great piece of work in Napa Valley.

This has to be one of the top Sauvignon Blanc of California, with its notes of guava, passion fruit, nectarine, and wild herbs. The palate is bright with a touch of richness and a slightly creamy mid-palate texture, yet never heavy, which leads to a finish of great precision and length. Impressive!

Golden yellow. Even has legs. Fine nose with citrus peel, lemon curd, and a hint of gooseberry. It’s delicacy is its calling card. Good strong acid, but more than enough fruit to measure up. Medium body but somehow seems ethereal. Mouth-watering. Strong finish. 5-13-16-8: 92/100.

Mostly Napa Valley 2017s (with 15/16/18 in the mix): Larger merchant tasting. Brief impressions. Fresh and clean, slightly creamy texture but remains on the light side of things with minerality and spearmint as the dominating aromas. Not overly complex but fun to drink and perfect for a summer apero.

Putzi's Napa 2017 new arrival tasting: A new Napa arrival tasting hosted by a wine merchant. A total of 30 wines mostly from 2017 (with a few 2018 whites and new releases from 2016 and 2015 in the mix) were presented in various price brackets ($40 to $200+). For 2017 my takeaways were 1) 2017 is already approachable and offers immediate drinking pleasure. But 2) the wines also came across lighter and less layered. 2017 doesn’t seem to have the refinement of 2016, the depth of 2014 or the muscular concentration of 2015. For many, it seems, finding a spot in the sun will be hard with 5 outstanding vintages before and likely 2 more (at least) right behind. There were notable exceptions of course. Wine of the night was Diamond Creek Volcanic Hill 2017 (95) and just whisker behind Viader 2017 (95). A very notable mention deserves the Detert East Block Cabernet Franc 2017 for its unique character (94).
Tasting note: A typical Sauvignon Blanc, almost. Steely and mineral notes embedded in a gooseberry fruit. A bit savoury with a smoky overlay and I welcome and appreciate the a well measured deployment of oak. Relatively light on the palate lacking mid-palate structure. Otherwise nice and crips acidity. A great, easy-drinking wine and ideal for social events where stretching the purse strings is not appreciated.

The 2018 Sauvignon Blanc is transparent deep straw in color with yellow variation. The expressive nose showcases aromas of Meyer lemon, cantaloupe, tangerine, lime zest, lemongrass, honey, saline mineral, white pepper spice, and cream. On the palate, I get notes of white peach, lemon and lime zest, grapefruit, green apple skins, freshly cut grass, brioche, white florals, and vibrant minerality. This is medium-bodied with high acidity and a lush, fully-rounded mouthfeel leading into a finish that lingers and lingers.

Spottswoode Dinner with Molly Sheppard & Ray Kaufman (Amuse Bouche, 22/F Hennessey Centre, Wan Chai, Hong kong): I sat next to Molly the winemaker. Very recent realease. Blended from 6 different barrels across 6 different Napa and Sonoma vineyards. Focus is on creating texture and tension through 200 different fermentations in oak and then concrete. Bright silver gold. Nose is grassy but not green. Quite complex. Nose is white peach fruit and stone fruits. White acacia blossom. Palate is defined by the really fresh cutting acidity that carries the weight and complexity of the body. It almost has a white Bordeaux Semillion/ SB weight and complexity about it. Quite heady and resonant. Dry almond finish in the mouth.
