A Night of Rochioli (Mostly West Block) (Classic Dallas): Barely perceptible aromas at the outset of tasting with palate showing an interesting, almost seamless melange of bark, fruit and medicinal herbs. Later in the evening, the wine improved. The nose opened up some more to show nice cherries accented by oak spice, and bark. Palate retained the fruit and bark flavors but was now accompanied by baking spices and a bit of vanilla oak. Full body.

My last bottle of a half case purchased around release, and the first time I’ve had it in 10 years. I always loved West Block the most of their single vineyard pinots for its lush textures and sexy fruit. I’m impressed with how well it’s held onto those traits, even if it’s not particularly complex. Very tasty, and a nice stroll down memory lane for me

Explosive nose, primarily of menthol, vanilla, and red berries.
Quite a seductive palate that is rich and sweet fruited although not hot or jammy.
Long and silky, mostly ripe cherries, tart acid, mint and some baking spice.
An extraordinary wine in the literal sense, but it's not what i look for in a Pinot Noir (especially the mint/menthol character). Difficult to rate, sub 90 as a Pinot Noir for me, but maybe 91 taken on it's own.

Crimson in color. 14.5% ABV. Stunning nose of dark fruits, cloves, pine needle and forest floor. Medium body with exquisite acidity. This Pinot Noir embodies grace and finesse from the very first sip. Cherry, strawberry, cranberry, earth and mushrooms on the palate. The finish is exceptionally long and seamless. Truly one of the very best California Pinot Noirs I can recall tasting. Fortunate to have another bottle in the cellar that I will check in on in the next 1-3 years.

Score based a style that many people love. I had actually sold this btl to a buddy at the tasting tonight when I was on the list some years back. One of those situations where once you finally make the list you realize the wines really aren't in your wheelhouse. It took me around 5 years to make the Rochioli list and only about six months to realize I enjoyed the chards but not the single vineyard PNs. I dropped as the prices were high and purchasing / shipping was kind of a hassle like many mailing list. I no longer do any mailing list and mostly buy French and Italy for the last 5 years. Super big and ripe RRV PN. Needs more acid for me. Still, very fun to try this blind.

Monthly Tasting Group: Blind Pinots Worldwide (The Dakota, Mpls, MN): Dark red color. Tasting pour blind over an hour plus. Not much doubt in mind on this wine - Cali, RRV. Big, full bodied, ripe fruits, black cherry, strawberry, very lush and forward. I can drink it and appreciate it for what it is, but just a very ripe style.

PnP; perfect cork. Medium red with some lightening at the edge. Floral nose with blackberries. Intense berry flavors on the palate with some spice and herbal character coming on in the finish which is very long. Perhaps not quite as good as the last bottle but very enjoyable.

Medium light red. Lovely fragrant and intense nose of red and black berries but especially boysenberry with a hint of citrus at the end. Echoes the berry theme on the palate (boysenberry liqueur!) and ends with a snappy acidity on the finish which complements the rest. Although this lacks the spicy herbal characteristics of Sonoma Coast or Burgundy it is quintessential Russian River Pinot Noir; at peak and a wonderful wine.

Showing some nice complexity but the fruit is not there. Where did it go? A very nice wine but pricey for what is. Not sure it's going to improve. The west block is always my favourite roichioli but I've had better west blocks

I took this to Aimee's Bistro last night. This really does remind me of the best of what Russian River Valley offers... it's sleek, concentrated, brooding, and aromatic. The nose is all fruit and spice, driving a complex mix of plum, strawberry, loam, some citrus, fig, cherry cola, sous bois, red bean dessert, and more. This is savory and rich, the mid-palate is stuffed with secondary flavors and I found that this needed to open up substantially. With air, it becomes more exotic and authentic...

A fabulous california pinot noir. All power and fruit. Dense in its structure and flavor profile with black and red fruits, a kiss of RRV cola character, pine needle, sous-bois and toasty oak. This wine struck me as significantly more Sonoma Coast in character than RRV with its pine forest flavor profile and the strictness of its structure. A great wine that merits plenty of attention.

Harmonious and fantastically sappy nose of red and blue fruits, white spices, loam and a hint of vanilla. Pure satin in the mouth with slightly darker fruits, notes of underbrush and citrus. Good length on the finish which shows rather brooding and reserved, highlighting minerals and Xmas spice. A sexy, powerful Pinot that evokes a riper year in Cote de Nuits. Excellent now but I wonder if another couple of years will unleash the finish.

not bad for me, i managed to hold for 2 years. i wouldn't say the wine is unyielding, but it is clearly a developing work in progress. the fruit is richly concentrated, but not medicinal or syrupy. very red, some mild cola. trying to get a handle on rochioli pinots and their aging potential. this is one to cellar. 92+

Hate to be the contrarian here, and this it just one person's opinion, but for my taste this wine is significantly overrated. (I won't even mention the price.) I've built up 6 years seniority in Rochioli's mailing list because I've admired the concentration and forward fruit style of their earlier pinots. But I wonder now if they've gone too far? At this point I'm drinking and actually enjoying their entry level pinots far more than the pricy single vineyard wines. The West Block is virtually one dimensional and dominated by an excessive richness of overripe plums and jam. Forget about romance and nuance. It fights and conquers any food you throw at it. There is (barely) enough acidity to cleanse the palate. It shouldn't be a challenge to taste your food! Tonight it was baked salmon, which should be pinot noir heaven, but the food was almost an afterthought. Chalk up all this jammy glob of fruit to global warming or Parkerization? Think I'll drink my Rhys pinots, move onto the promising '08 Willamette pinots--and after that maybe the '05 Burgundy's will be ready...
