  • Opened because I discovered this one had a slightly leaky cork. Had about half an inch of ullage, but the wine seems sound. Nose has a lot of lime and citrus, but on the palate that lime citrus turns to peach and apricot stone fruit on the finish. Really good minerality and crushed stone notes. Medium sweetness is balanced by medium+ acidity. I like where this is right now. It's starting to develop some secondary flavors and despite being from a vintage where a lot of wines lacked acidity, I think this still has enough acidity to balance the sweetness and to give it enough structure to continue aging gracefully. Holding the other bottles I have for several more years.

  • Drunk over two days. More petrol when first opened. Lots of peach and citrus, wet stone. It's got the spring water lightness but has great intensity of fruit while maintaining a lithe frame. Not as highly wound as it was on release, but it's still pretty tight. I get what some others say about the lack of acid compared to some other vintages, but it still has medium+ acidity to keep the slight sweetness in check (it has mouthwatering acid in the finish). Better poise and better integrated on day two. To me it seems like a great wine that just needs time to come together. I have 3 more bottles and think it'd be best to hold off until at least 2023 and maybe a bit more.

  • Very pale colour. Not too sweet but the lack of acid showed through despite the zesty lemon fruit. After much hype I wasn't very impressed by this.

  • Finish doesnt quite have the cut I would like which is probably a product of the vintage. Otherwise really nice.

  • Super bottle. Notes of lime, green apple, petrol, kerosene. Palate like nose, bracing acid, lots of minerality, wet rocks.

  • I'm not used to this relative lack of cut from a Falkenstein feinherb, though I realize it's a likely a signature of the vintage. It tightened up nicely after a few days, and was lovely and pure, but it just wasn't the electric stuff I crave.

  • Fuder Palm, Meyer Sydney. A really beautiful wine here, captures that idiosyncratic Falkenstein spring water quality while also having a decently complex nose. The palate is very linear with a great balance and energy. Another great feinherb from Falkenstein that would be fun to see in 10 years.

  • I think Spatlese-Feinherb is where Falkenstein really sings (for me at least). This has that sweet-tart tension that just prolongs the impression of the wine on the palate. It’s also Uber-refreshing and clear and minerally. Fantastic at the table and somehow both gluggable and something more serious.

  • Come on NYC Falkenstein Posse (tm)! No notes yet? The wines have been out like 2 weeks now. Given that, I decided that I needed to make the sacrifice and go out and grab a few bottles from the neighborhood stores and take one for the team! That's just the kind of guy I am. So I decided to start with 'the #3' (well, after the 2017 red.) Tangerine, lime, juicy fruit gum, whipped cream, lavender, spray soap, other herbs. it's a little bit of a shock because it's fruitier and juicer on the nose than the 2016, but have no fear - the acid and lightness and zing are there in spades as well. it does make for a bit of a 2-tiered feel, but it works and will integrate with age (will check tomorrow). Showing a little sour right now (maybe it's the pepperoni pizza I'm eating). Lemon, lime, stones, minerals - good acid and drive, but a little grumpy. Will check in again tomorrow.

Day 3: lime, lime pith, crushed stones, flint, whipped cream. Really crystalline and light and pure. The palate has resolved well and is similar to the nose: lots of lime and lime pith, some lemon, saline, stones, some herbs. The end of the palate is quite saline and packed with what seems to be brown spices - they are what now coat the sides of the tongue as we move into the finish. the finish is sour and stones and spices - there is an intense pulse of acid and sour lemon-lime when swallowed that reminds me of the palate on day one. Excellent and a steal for the price, but in the middle of the pack when it comes to Falkenstein experiences from 2016-8. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16/20.
