Tasty 70/30 blend of Garnacha and Monastrell. Nose of red and black berries, potting soil, forest floor, and spice. Palate was silky with med-med plus acid, red currant, cooked raspberry, cedar spice, and wet earth. Medium to medium plus body, medium plus finish with moderate, powdery tannin. Excellent QPR!

Intriguing wine, really started to shine after an hour of breathing. At first Grenache was very prominent and not in a particularly refined way, however this morphed into something much more pleasant and easily drinkable. Vibrant berry, tobacco and plum notes. A bit of cinnamon on the back palate. Lingering finish that is very plush. Probably a little expensive in Australia, but great value for 5 or 6 euros as advertised on some websites.

Blend of Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet) and Monastrell (Mourvèdre) bush vines. The medium-high intensity nose is fruit forward and ripe with blueberry, bramble, black tea, and savoury aromas. It's medium+ bodied on the sweetish palate with more ripe blueberry, blackberry, and black tea flavours with some savouryness and touches of pepper spice. It has fresh, juicy acidity and polished tannins that offer a subtle, textural grip, along with some warmth on the mid-palate. Dark berry and savoury notes linger on the finish, with good length.
A good inexpensive spicy Spanish wine! It is amazing how thick and punchy it is compared with the calmer French version: the Rhone with its Grenache (Garnacha) and Mourvèdre (Monastrell) which doesn't taste anything like this baby. The Spaniards like to leave that stuff on its skins for a while, fortifying it with tannins and making it so robust you can almost cut it with a knife. The flavor and color of blackberries (freshly squeezed) minus the sugars and tobacco minus the smoke.
Take a couple bottles of this into the woods for a weekend for a very spiritual experience.

2018 Bodegas Atalaya Laya, Almansa, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. 4/5/2020 - 70% Garnacha Tintorera, 30% Monastrell from Almansa vineyards at 700-1000 m with calcareous soil. Separately fermented in stainless steel tanks. Aged 4 months in French oak barrels. 14% Abv. Proprietor: Bodegas Atalaya is founded by Gil Family Estates in 2007. A(ccuracy)=2: Purple ruby; Berries, bacon, spice. B(alance)=2: Good acid structure and fruit; needs adequate breathing. C(omplexity)=2: Ripe berries, plum, licorice, tobacco. D(epth)=2: Impressive length and finish.

Decanted off of a bit of sediment. Wet sand, strong black fruits, coffee, mushroom, black plum, bread. Firm on the palate with bursting fruit flavors. Lip-smacking. Grenache/monastrell. It was only $7!

A shipper’s wine, but a good one. Decanted one hour ahead. Inky dark garnet color. Rich nose, showing ultra black fruits such as plum and blackberry, coffee, mushroom, wet sand, tea. Full-bodied but firm on the palate with fruit flavors leading. Finishes with grippy but light tannins. This is very good but it was only $7. Unbelievable, unless you went to a bistro in Almansa where this wine originated. Wow.

Youthful, rich and approachable Almansa wine, a blend of 70 % Garnacha Tintorera and 30 % Monastrell (limestone soils) that was aged for four months in French oak barrels. Deep inky-red color with a purplish hue. On the nose aromas of plum, cassis, licorice and some smoky tones. The palate shows abundant blackberry and blueberry fruit, good structure, supple tannins and quite a high alcohol level. Fruity finish. An enjoyable everyday wine designed to be drunk young.

N: RIPE berries with notes of choc, poss garrigue?
P: MF body; RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish frt (approaching threshold R.S.?) met by an astringent PUCKER which works its way into & through the LONG, *possibly* very, VERY slightly puckerish finish with a bitter/swtness to the DUSTY tannins. Approachable now with food, should improve for 12 mos or so, then drink through '23. My VG+/EXC-, trending towards the higher *easily* for QPR. 92 pts Suckling (7/26/19). [This vendor's $6.99 puts it in the TOP 15% of wine-searcher's postings!]

70% Garnacha Tintorera, 30% Monastrell. Dark opaque color. 4m of ageing. Suave aromas, a little pepper underlay. Still carries a lot of freshness. Big fruit, stays away from any raisin. Tremendous value for $10.

Muted on the nose, soft sweet appealing fruit on the palate. Delicious everyday drinking wine. Unusual length for a wine under $10. Another winner from Juan Gil family Estates
FWIiW - last night I was drinking bodegas morca Touran Garnacha, which costs 10x this wine. It was much better - maybe 4x better? But as great as it was, 99% of wines sold in the US are under $10. Laya is a star in that price bracket
Sat, 12/28/19, $2 Tasting (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): Likely predominantly Alicante Bouschet, the remainder being Mourvedre, from vines planted @ ≈3,280 ft elev; Likely aged for something like 4 mos in FR oak; [Info garnered from the '09 vintage]

I like this wine it's young and fresh. I believe the 2018 has aging potential. The wine is dark and inky, the fruit is upfront with notes of plum, blueberry and coco powder. The finish is tannic, herbaceous yet balanced and long. Hold for a min of 3yrs.

Not good, could barely finish the bottle. I bought it because the shelf talker at the store said 92 points by JamesSuckling.com. Not sure what’s up with that score, but hard to imagine anyone giving this wine more than 85 points.
