  • Dinner at William's (William & Gina's): From a 375ml. This has developed quite nicely in the last 5 years or so since I last tried it. The nose had grown richer, more intense, with deep notes of honey and apricots and sweet peaches, along with a waft of nuttiness and a little drift of petrol. The palate has gone the other way though - it was certainly less sweet than nose, and seems less sweet than what I noted from the last bottle as well. What struck me most here was super fresh, juicy acidity that gave the wine a lovely energy. It seems to have gown in stature too, with a lovely Rheingau depth and feel, even power, to its flavours of peaches and nectarines and more citrusy lemons, all traced with that wonderful acidity. The finish surprisingly still had some primary grape sugars on it along with a little spiciness, which suggests that the wine still needs time. No worries on that front though - this has the structure and balance to age for a decade and more. I would personally leave it aside for another 4-5 years before popping another 375ml. Very good.

  • Zesty, medium sweet, starting to develop a petrolly note. If you feel like a sweetish aperitif, this is just the ticket.

  • Alcohol :: 7%
    From 500ml. Second bottle and this showed even better. Sweet lemon, peaches, apricot, yellow flower with just a faint hint of petroleum and earth. This is drinking very well now: well-balance between the sweetness, acidity and mineral. Creamy, saline, sweet honey entry that quickly wrapped up by the mouth watering acidity that form the medium level of complexity and refreshing mouth feel. I pretty much like the juicy finish that linger with mineral and light touch of sweet lemon and preserved plum undertone.

  • Casual Drink 2 (Maiu Restaurant - Damansara Perdana): Alcohol :: 7%
    From 500ml. Medium golden in color. Very sweet, honey coated mango, mandarin and smoke, quite complex and deep with strong acid to balance with the sweetness on the considerably rich entry. Sweet but bright, not heavy but this lack a bit of richness on the mid palate. Medium length. Not bad too. Buy - Maybe.

  • Remains pale; pineapple (chunks), lychees, penetrating; medium- sweet, refreshing acidity, nicely weighted, has a stone fruit fleshiness; this has breed & balance. Potentially a long distance runner, but lovely right now.

  • A more old-school, classical Auslese here with fresh yellow plum and lemon candy flavours accented by floral notes, touches of honey and the start of developing petrol elements. Medium weight with a gentle, glossy mouthfeel, moderate sweetness and serious length. Great stuff.

  • Lovely bone of acidity running through sweet lychees and pineapply goodness. Some kero nose, typical german riesling spices and florals . Excellent acidity that makes this auslese extremely quaffable.

  • At Lagoon with Elsa, Alex and Alex. From an unusual 500ml bottling. Clearly a child of its vintage, this was lacking in some weight for a Rheingau Auslese and had precious little botrytis, but was smashing nonetheless - clean, precise, focused and very delicious. Golden yellow in colour. Lots of honeyed, nectar notes on the nose along with a healthy dose of kerosene,. With a bit of air, a whole panoply of fragrant, slightly tropical fruits appeared - pineapple, longans, apricot, and nectarine. Palate had a nice density, just shading the Spatlese level. I would say rather light for a young Auslese. Great balance though, with lots of zip from fresh lemony acidity giving the wine much verve as it expressed it self in more honeyed tones of apricots, mandarin orange and candied pineapple. Finish was nice and long, with a small but persistent stream of minerally, slatey notes. This really gained some gravitas with time and air, taking on more orange tones and a lovely minerally weight, with lots of grippy dry extract on the palate. I really liked this - it worked superbly well with chili-sauce / sambal drenched BBQ seafood. Drinking nicely now, but should age effortlessly for a decade or more. Drink up if you like your Auslesen sweet though - I suspect the sugar will go down very fast on this one.

  • Pale yellow, light, floral slightly honeyed nose. Fresh, floral attack, light, clean acidity, lovely weight and texture, just lacking a bit in the flavour department. Suspect this has closed up somewhat. Has potential though. **(*)
