2001 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Restaurant Waldhorn, Kirchheim, Germany): Popped and poured. Deep golden color with amber hue. Nose of fine Manzanilla Sherry, salty, complex and deep. On the palate also very salty, again Manzanilla Sherry notes, very good balance, creamy texture, complex and logn. Unfortunately it lacks acidity and that makes it a bit broader and hot (13,5% abv). With a higher acidity close to great, this bottle around 92

Intronizzation Night for Rhone (Lafayette): When we first learned about this wine we heard that it is lovely in its youth and then it basically disappears for 10-15 years and eventually comes back. We bought a few bottles of this vintage a few years ago and it was totally in that shut down phase and have never known when it would be safe to bring it back. Seems like the time is now. This was drinking very well. The Chave blancs are nice but to me there is something about the old vine Roussane on it's own that is just special. Honey and kindof a fleshy white peach note. Super tasty.

Opened to continue the celebration of husband's birthday. Much better than the last bottle we had which was very oxidized. Yes still probably past prime and a bit oxidized, but the wine was still had yellow stone fruit and lemon zest along with the notes of caramelized honey and toasted hazel nut. These are definitely on the down slope though - caution anyone considering purchasing these at auction and if you own - time to drink up.

The least appealing of the three old vintages tasted vertically (1999+2000+2001). Nose: fino sherry and red winter apples. Palate: overtly mature with low acidity, red apples, mushroom. Interesting yet over the hill.

Similar to other notes below, this was a dark amber color and very oxidized tasting. More reminiscent of an aged LDH Blanco - with lots of nutty (walnut) and caramelized notes. Was better when chilled down as these notes were less pronounced. Well past prime - time to drink these up if you hold them in your cellar.

Dark amber color. Oxidation for sure. Evolves over time in the glass but never gets past tasting somewhat bitter and off. Just simply past its prime. Underneath some caramel and petrol but overall this is a disappointment at this stage.

Fully mature bottle. Dark yellow. Dank next to a 05 which I found more enjoyable vs the 01 at this stage. The 01 was much darker and more oxidized notes. Did get better after 30 mins of air but ultimately I think this bottle was past its prime (although still very interesting). Drink up

Zachy's Wine Auction - Late Spring 2015; 5/14/2015-5/15/2015 (Le Bernadin Prive): Opened and drank over the course of probably 4-5 hours. This needed some time to settle and for some of the oxidation to blow off. Had the '98 a few months ago and that was a 'wow' wine moment for me. This was not that. By the end of the time it was good, giving off some interesting caramel notes and having an endless evolution on the palette, but not heartachingly good. I can't tell if it's done and time to drink up or instead if it's in a bit of a dumb phase and will come out on the other side. Would have liked to see a bit more acidity to the wine for that to be the case, but would be very open to hearing opinions of those more familiar. I'm also not sure how the '01 vintage in Rhone stacks up for whites and so maybe it was just not the same level of vintage and so lacking the staying power. Anyway, enjoyable wine, but not quite the outstanding I'd been hoping for.

olives and hazelnut aromas. some confected banana and circus peanut. just hints at green herb oil, perhaps some spearmint. but the spearmint whisper doesn't follow through on the palate. palate shows a roundness and none of the herbal tickle. but there is a decending rusticity that must just continue down the road of complexity. wow.

Shinji - The Sushi indulgence (Shinji by Kanesaka, Raffles Hotel): Alcohol :: 13.5% Medium golden. This wine is complex from the start to the end. Why? The flavors keep changing in the glass from time to time. Roasted almond and hazelnut intermixed with sweet honey, sweet herbs and loaded with sea breeze, saline mineral and chrysanthemum with great depth, complexity and class. Slowly, roasted coffee and caramel note emerged. Full bodied, almost oily in texture that giving the creamy mouthfeel. When one thought this could be heavy in that oily sense, richness and concentration but there is this underlying complex saline mineral and sweet acidic backbone to give it a lift and balance. Such a harmony sense and finesse here. The mid palate is almost explosive like but it iPad this Zen like balance and harmony. Sweet start but ended ethereally long, dry and clean with jus a touch of honey spices. I'm glad I manage to get a few more.

The Eleventh Annual Stonefields Dinner (Guelph, ON, Canada): From magnum and decanted for 20-30 minutes. Once in Lifetime...: From magnum, decanted approximately 20 minutes prior to service, straw colour in the glass. Interesting nose of stone fruits, dried apricot, roasted hazelnuts, spice, and florals. On the palate, this is still fairly rich in texture, with moderate acidity, showing notes of dried fruits, mineral, roasted hazelnuts and dried flowers. The finish is a touch clipped, bitter, and showing some excessive heat. To me, even in magnum, this wine is tired. Perhaps this is a wine I don’t understand, but I have not tried one of these that have come out “on the other side” and been better than it was in it’s youth.

Absoloutely fascinating wine on several levels, and like nothing I've had in years. Deep, rich golden color, maybe even heading toward orange-ish. Apricots on the palate. Thick, rich and maybe a little sweet even, but light on its feet nonetheless. Missing a little mid-palate, but an incredibly long on the finish. Perhaps more interesting intellectually rather than hedonistically, but still a real drinking experience nonetheless...

2011 Simple Dinner Series 12 :: A night with CDPs (Jade Palace Seafood Restaurant, The Forum Shopping Mall, Orchard Road): Alcohol :: 13.5% Dark golden. WOW, this is powerful! Compared to the more restraint Pegau Blanc, this is definitely a more sexy, open knit juice. So much depth and complexity on both nose and palate. Marmalade, honeycomb, honeysuckle, caramelize apple intermixed with perfume chrysanthemum, mineral and tons of yellow fruits that formed the superb complex, intense aromas that is almost impenetrable. Opulent and succulent on the palate that loaded with ripe yellow fruits, almond, dried herbs and mineral with excellent depth, power and lushness. Quite oily on the mid palate but this remain highly focus and delineated. I really like the purity and energy here, it coated the tongue gently and refuse to let go and move on to the incredibly long finish that is surprisingly clean with stunning persistent. This is no doubt the Montrachet of Southern France. Not at its peak yet, another 3-5yrs perhaps? 93-94+

This is drinking great now....faintly oxidative notes of pecan and almond, but really that's secondary here to the honey, acacia and honeysuckle, and apricot. My last bottle was undrinkable and sherried, so it was either just in a bad "phase" or there is something similar to pre-mox in White Burgs going on here...

Hmmm. This is a golden color, with an oxidised quality and a strong woody quality on the nose at first. In the glass it settles down, but is a very distinctive wine. I would have expected this to taste fresher given it's age, and it feels very advanced. May be an off bottle? It's the first from this case, so we'll see. Torn about whether to plough through these before they fall apart or wait and hope they are as good white beaucastel can be.

Pop and pour. The color is richly golden with a slight orangish hue. Immediately the nose sticks out with very smokey quality. This dissipates over time. The aromas change over the course of night (about 2 hrs) initially showing oxidative with apricot, and the honeysuckle others have mentioned. Later aromas become more honeyed with the oxidative note diminished and presence of chopped fresh nuts and butterscotch. The texture is waxy, lanolin like yet at the same time somewhat silky. The midpalate is rich and lush and finish goes on and on. These Rousanne VV wines are odd creatures with a chameleon like evolution. They can recover with age, lose the oxidative quality and show impressive flavors and complexity. Another first bottle from an overseas case purchase.

Amber with orange highlights. The wine did exhibit some oxidative elements, but not near as much as I expected after viewing the color. Initial nose of orange marmalade and honeysuckle became caramelized after some airtime. Scents of carmel, nuts, toasted marshmellow, and liquor of Kumquat abounded. Nicely balanced, this wine carried itself well all the way though the medium finish. Much better with food, it was a well suited match for a curried squash soup. Blind I would have guessed this as a wine 2 to 3 times as old as it was. Very interesting wine, yet not quite right. Maybe a in-between stage?

Certainly back open for business. Slightly oxidative nose when opened, but that blew off with a quick double decant. Honeysuckle dominates. More sweetness than I expected. Rich, floral aromas with gorgeous golden colour leaves you anticipating an incredible wine. However, followed by somewhat disappointingly light/medium bodied taste, lacking the follow through one would expect given the colour and aroma. I suspect this is just entering the renowned "dumb" phase so will leave the rest for at least 5 years to see what happens the other end!
