The 1988 Sociando-Mallet was lovely. When it was first decanted and those herbaceous notes came through I thought- oh no! Here we go again! (@rockincabs @englishmans_claret) but it blew off and velvety merlot dominated and really showed through . This is a Chateau that over delivers every time for me. Great Haut Medoc. Green blows off to stone and ripe fruit, ripe pepper and lovely tobacco and cassis.

Large bouquet of dust and dead leaf. Quite dark and full. On the palate there is minerals and dust and deep earth. Fruit is a bit short. Still tannic. A bit clumsy. Not sure if it has pass its better fruit balance stage.

Pristine bottle with fill into the neck. This is an old school Bordeaux from a Bordeaux lovers vintage. As such, this really hit the spot. Tobacco, sweet pepper, gravel all melded together and fully resolved. Great texture and old claret taste. Drink now.

Pristine bottle, level into neck. Classic Sociando, classic 1988. Very, very gravelly, cool and slender but no lack of textural softness, fresh, small red and black berries, liquorice, cedar, hint of spice, retains good phenolic grip, very stony finish, good length. Foursquare but it is exactly what it is.

Expressive nose of bell pepper and tobacco. Palate is well integrated though a bit thin with angular acidity and fine tannins in the background. Fruit is complexity tertiary at this point and a little tired. Moderate finish. Appears to be on a graceful fade from peak, but still quite enjoyable for those you enjoy the style.

Pristine bottle, level base of neck. Thankfully, just a bit more charming than the previous bottles, with some fruit of small red berries and a hint of silk. Of course there are notes of green paprika and gravel too, but overall this is a more attractive package than the previous, austere bottles.

Pristine bottle, level into neck, cork disintegrated upon extraction. As in many other 1988's, the warm gravel / wet stone note is now quite dominant. Lovage, beefstock, leather, spice, some red berries; quite a tertiary wine but still lively, slender but well-balanced, medium weight, fully mature but still retains tannic grip; good length. It is a good wine but it is also a bit like chewing on gravel. Needs food.

Still a deep bright ruby, with a touch of brick age around the edges. Lovely bouquet, soft but still present tannins, medium length finish with silky texture. Could be a real spoiler if tasted alongside more prestigious classed growths. Lovely bottle, drinking well now but will hold for at least several (3-5+) more years. Stored in personal natural cellar; purchased on release.

Pristine bottle, level into neck, long cork extracted intact without difficulty; initially a soaring nose of wet stone, complemented later by rustic notes of earth, leather and spice, with some creamy red berry fruit in the back; the palate is quite tannic, dry, with more than a hint of austerity, very cool and mineral, very 1988, lacks charm and stuffing; good length, cold tea and wet stone. Fully mature, a very classic profile, most of the fruit has been used up, needs a good steak.

Somehow it was still alive! Hooray! Very light and bright classical colour! The nose was still expressive and really sophisticated. I got scents of violets, other flowery impressions, some strawberries and even mild smoke. Overall it seemed to be a very well aged and showed off with a very delicate-elegant nose. The taste might have been a bit too delicate (or overage). There were hints of bright red fruits and some tannic life left. But really not a lot though! Anyway a very nice experience of a very classical (and not so much alive) Médoc growth!

Using the Audoulze method for opening this older wine, it initially as might be expected, showed nothing but a brick color on the initial pour. Several hours later, however, the wine displays a core of near opaque plum with a narrow bank of brick on the rim. Rose dust dominates the nose followed with black currants and olives and saddle leather. While the nose is not expansive, it is inviting. The profile exhibits all those elements in a neat, balanced package of medium weight. Surprisingly, the finish opts a more modern note of ..... chocolate. A delicious wine that makes one long for more good Bordeaux at a $23 price tag. It makes one long to have a cellar full of this now. Some display of gritty sediment and a very larger pieces, but nothing near what might be expected. The label uses the “11 - 14% alc.” designation, but I suspect this is much closer to 11%, which is to say, 12 or 12.5%. With pan seared lamb chops topped with an olive tapenade; a killer combination that went by way too quickly. Highly Recommended.

Sotheby's Pre-Auction Tasting (Sotheby's, New York): This had an okay nose that didn't show too much and it intruded on the palate with an aggressive tartness that was not pleasant. It was probably hard to give this a fair analysis because it was in the company of a number of much better wines, but it was the least good of the six red bordeaux we tasted and was also outperformed by the 2001 Ornellaia and some of the CA cabs. I heard one of the Sotheby's wine experts telling another taster that the Sociando is a great value. While he may be right about other vintages (and to be fair he was speaking generally of the chateau, not of the particular vintage), if this vintage is a good value it can only be because it's extraordinarily cheap (for a bordeaux with two decades under it's belt), not because the quality is high for the price.

Had bought three bottles some years back. Opened one at a wine tasting with friends, some really expert. Top of neck when opened. Cork ok (some seepage to 1/3), some fungus under cap. Wine was short and rough, tannins had long won from the fruit. Slightly spoiled whiff on the finish too. Luckily I had brought a back-up bottle (one never knows with a 20 year old wine...). Same thing though, also after decanting, to my embarrassment. Two days later, third and last bottle, carefully taken up from cellar, level again A-ok, cork too (no fungus); first impression somewhat better on nose (austere, mineralic, but not exciting) but decided to give it some wait. Got worse, and it had died by the next day. Severe disappointment in view of impeccable tasting record of Sociando until then... even on "small" years.

Mmm, textbook Sociando and just a delight with a grilled ribeye. Lean, mean, and slightly vegetal. It doesn't sound very good, does it? But this is textbook, loaded with minerality, hints of cranberry, stem and graphite. This is an austere wine, but the purity and tipicity are off the charts. This is textbook Bordeaux, glorious and strong, perfect with a steak. Twenty years has served this bottle very well.

Opened, decanted and drank within 1-3 h from opening. Got better all the time. Deep garnet colour, complex and intense nose with typical Bordeaux elements (leather, smoke etc.) Medium bodied, softened tannins, acidity a bit pronounced at first but the wine got more balanced when the fruit really started to open. Long. Provides lovely drinking just now, I'd like to have more.

($20) On the nose the wine has a green pepper, bell pepper, and dusty mesquite wood quality. The palate is medium-bodied with rather savory flavors and subdued dark fruit. Decent if it is what you are in the mood for. Most of the nuance seems to be in the nose.
