2005 BOND Melbury

Community Tasting Notes

Community Tasting Notes (33) Avg Score: 94.8 points

  • A rich, but balanced wine. Elegant poise with plum, damson, blackberry jam, gorgeous spice and minerally soils at its core. The herbal and stone notes in the finish are beautiful still.

The lavish oak is holding this back a bit at this point in its development as the fruit slides into middle age, and its potency is moving backward a bit. There should be more of the terroir coming out at this point, but the oak is a bit intrusive.

Good wine, but drink up. I'll hold one for the long term, but will plan on finishing these over the next 3-4 years.

  • Impeccably balanced, medium plus weight, dark fruit. Delicious

  • Full bodied, complex with dark berry fruit and notes of sweet tobacco, leather, cassis, herbs and spices. This Bordeaux blend needs at least an hour for its massive tannins to fully integrate into the dark berry fruit. On the finish there are hints of chocolate and mocha furthering the complexity of this wine. While drinking very well right now, this wine has another 20 years left in it.

  • Kleur: Diep donkerrood. Lange afdronk. Algemeen / potentieel: Prachtige, toegankelijke en klassieke Melbury! 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 12 + Smaak / Afdronk: 18 + Algemeen / potentieel: 9 = 94/100

Colour: Deep dark red. Aroma / bouquet: Impressive and pleasant bouquet, pronounced, harmonious but refined and classic. Dark fruit, cherry / cassis, chic wood. In addition, coffee beans, bitter chocolate and leather. And tobacco! Taste / Aftertaste: Wow. In the mouth this 'Napa First Growth' is just as impressive, layered and refined as on the nose. Concentrated, soft acidity, buttery and velvety tannins. Wonderfully beautiful balance, a wine where everything is right and nothing disturbs the balanced image. Long finish. General / potential: Beautiful, accessible and classic Melbury! 50 + Colour: 5 + Aroma / Bouquet: 12 + Taste / Aftertaste: 18 + General / Potential: 9 = 94/100

  • Wow. This is a massive layered and sexy wine. Cult cab styling with classic personality. Cannot wait for my next bottle.

Nose: black cherry, plum, strawberry, thyme, mineral, chocolate, espresso and mint. Palate: very complex and layered black/red fruit that unwinds with developing secondary notes of leather and thyme. Finish: berries and espresso and leather.

  • Occasional dinner group: Great whites and Cult Napa (@ Merlet): Blackberries and other ripe berry fruits in the bouquet. Very sexy with a lot of sweet perfume impressions and sweet spices. On the palate the same berries, beautiful acidity and beautifully round tannin. Delicious and approachable wine with a good future.

  • Our Valentine's dinner selection. Outstanding wine at a beautiful stage. I put it in the decanter around 3:15PM until 4:30, then placed back into the bottle to be consumed from 6PM to 8PM. It has incredible nose, big body, firm tannins, you can't tell it's a 15 year wine. We paired it with Filet Mignon and risotto with truffle oil, the finish is long and pleasant.

This wine is drinking beautifully now and should continue so for 10+ years.

Drink or hold but there is no need for waiting!!!!

  • Double decanted for an hour, deep ruby, black cherry with a touch of vanilla, med. tannins, long finish; outstanding, drink or hold

  • I decanted it for around one hour and drank it over the next hour and a half at a restaurant, it has amazing nose with flowers and smoke notes while on the palate it felt still close or undeveloped. Planing to keep one bottle for another 3 years and then decant it for over 3 hours...

  • Cork broke up when opening. Purple, opaque, showing no hint of aging.

Intense nose on first decanting, so intense it almost made me sneeze. Good balance with currant, cherry, cabernet, leather and beef scents.

Balanced but intense flavor first out of bottle. Needs a few hours of breathing. I am leaving half the bottle in the decanter for tomorrow to see how a full day of breathing affects it. Taste: cherry, plum, steak, cabernet and a flavor I can't identify. Even though it is well balanced now it has enough tannins and backbone to last another 20 to 30 years at least. Long finish with flavors of the middle of a filet mignon and fresh cut tobacco with cherry. Excellent with beef carpaccio and rack of lamb with rosemary and buttermilk mashed potatos and gravy.

My God, what a magnificent wine! I'm mentally patting myself on the back for having bought the 2005's.

  • At Le Coq Rico in NYC, corkage friendly place in NYC. Dinner w Steve K. Opened about 90 minutes before dinner to slow ox, decanted at the restaurant

Deep red/purple color. Incredible nose: black fruits, cherry, forest floor/pine, savory/beef, caramel, vanilla, cedar. Rich and jammy palate, viscous and creamy mouthfeel. Palate shows blueberry, cherry, plum, sweet tobacco, licorice and graphite notes. Finish is long and nuanced,

This is a big, hedonistic wine that is aging beautifully. From a great Napa Vintage, fruit from hills close to Pritchard Hill. This wine is in a really good spot right now, rich fruit forward characteristics that are coming together nicely with age. Best guess is it should hold it this level for another 5-7 years, certainly lasting 20+ if you want to cellar...This bottle took some time to open up, it was at its best after being open for about 3 hours. Will try to give next bottles a healthy decant, worthy of such a spectacular wine. Really special wine....score may go higher in time...

  • Very nice wine. Great spiciness coupled with ripe fruit. Still a youngster and would definitely benefit from more bottle age but enjoyable to drink today

  • Blood red. A touch viscous while decanting. Light sediment. Lush nose of forest floor, toasted bread, licorice, bouquet garni and beef. Powerful herbs, blackberries, a hint of morels and grilled meat. Evolves to chocolate, leather and green tobacco. Beautifully integrated tannins. Finish goes on forever.

  • Double decanted for two hours. The nose was exceptional with caramel, vanilla, big dark ripe black fruits, cedar wood, and cherry liquor. Very jammy on the palate yet the fruit balance was just right and not overwhelming. The wine had good depth with different layers. In 5-10 years, the wine would be at another level. I would keep it if you only have one bottle.

  • The nose is simply astonishing. The color was very dark almost black color. Great nose of dark fruit upon opening. it was thick almost syrupy. Decanted for 1.5 hours. It was balanced, perfectly big, and almost creamy texture if you will. Fruit was tremendous, very little heat if any at all. This was clearly much better than the 2006 Melbury that we drank immediately after.

  • Ruby red, dense and dark. Nose: Floral-violet, floral soap, rose petals, raspberries, cherries, and I swear to God turkey gravy. Though I am not convinced that would have been picked up any time other than the week before Thanksgiving. Tasted ripe plum, spice, pepper, and a hint of cinnamon. Obligatory alliteration - complex yet delightfully delicate!
    - Off to get my nose checked.

  • Having laid down all our Bond since 2004 it was time. The price on these has made it an approach avoidance issue. I have two copies of each of the five, and so drinking one leaves only one. No regrets. No sign of age, but fully ready if you want to try it. Dark, viscous, slightly sweet, cherry, sweet tobacco, vanilla, chocolate and who knows what else. Intense, focused, built beautifully from front to back, with a lengthy finish. Amazing promise. Now, do I open a Harlan?

  • Wow. Huge. Decanted for about an hour - could have decanted overnight. This wine is gigantic. Tons of flavors and all in great balance. Smooth. Velvet comes to mind. 94+

  • Beautiful rich sweet red cherry aromas with crushed rocks, sweet cream and milk chocolate aromas. Sweet ripe cherry flavors dominate with great mouth filling velvet texture. Classy nuanced and wonderful balance. A sexy crowd pleasing kind of wine. Slutty in the best possible way. A guilty pleasure. Yum.

  • After a 12 hour breathing this was still a monster wine and interestingly confused our tasting group. Some wondered if this was Rhone - La Turque! All loved as did I- sometimes I wish I could participate in my own blind tastings blinded myself. A masterful cab - dark and darker - mouth filling- long list of fruits and favors and aromas to satisfy any imagination. Decades to go.

  • A wonderful Cali Cab pretty aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, and blueberry with vanilla smoke. Creamy dense lush flavors with silky mouthfeel and long finish. Nice balance and well integrated nearly seamless. Just a tad warm. Pretty stuff and drinking great. Bottle was finished in what seemed like just a few minutes by four of us.

  • Nose: Started with plum, overripe strawberry, raspberry and blueberry notes that had an inky character but complexity came out with decanting. Grilled herbs, anise, cedar, tobacco and classic rutherford dust began to appear. Palate: Complete, silky and full in the mouth. The red and black fruit mix shows right up front, but there is a lengthy midpalate on this wine that is detailed with quince, grilled herbs, nutmeg, chocolate, apricot and graphite. Finish: Long with nice acidity, but the silky feel continues here.

Celebrating closing on our first house with an awesome bottle of wine.

  • Fantastic bottle of wine! Deep red and full of complex tannins. Hints of lush red fruit on the nose. Lots of cherries, mocha, and leather in your mouth. Finish was extra long-at least 45 seconds. Absolutely enjoyed this bottle of wine with filets. Wish I had more Melburys!

  • Really nice bottle of wine and in the perfect drinking window. Ruby in color. Nose is a bit subdued but still fruit dominated by dark fruits with a bit a sweetness and an ever so slight hint of licorice. Palate well rounded, soft with added complexity of age. Moderate finish.

  • Opened Christmas day - decanted for a couple of hours. Deep nose of dark fruit, charcoal and spice. Intense on the palate, with a long finish. Structured; 5-10 years and this will really be something.

  • Drink as it was opened. Lots of tannin. Spice with black fruits. After one hour, the taste is better with lower in tannin. Sweet with good after taste. Well balanced. A bit young. Still a long way to go.

  • Delicious offering shared over Christmas Dinner. Opened about 30 minutes prior to dinner, then consumed over the next hour. Nose of spices, current, red fruit. Palate matched the aromatics, though with more vibrant fruits a,d more subtle structure. Delicious. And great to tastte as it opened throughout the night. Definitely a great wine to drink fairly young, but would decant for at least an hour before drinking.

  • Opened the bottle, drinking it right now. Will issue final grade eventually.

  • Reticent on the nose, giving a slightly floral perfumed impression, some black cherry, and some heat (?). Red currant, black plum, met with vanilla laced oak. Disciplined, but ripe and airy, and (perhaps) the lightest of all the Vecina, St Eden, and Pluribus. Lithe and racy, but also layered and complex. This has sneaky structure--the tannins are backloaded, and so ripe that you do not realize the full dimension of this wine until you turn it over on your tounge a bit, and the finish sails on and on.
