2018 Montevertine Toscana IGT

Community Tasting Notes

Community Tasting Notes (22) Avg Score: 92.2 points

  • 5hrs slow o. Very expressive nose of cherry, cinnamon and graphite. Surprisingly silky texture on the palate for its age; the tannins catch up to you later when your head feels like it’s been hit hard. A few more years in the cellar would likely improve it.

    Score:93. Relative to expectations: ++

  • Lots of meat on the nose, which strangely does not transfer to the taste, in the manner of a Cote Rotie, but which is more fruit than earth, and surprisingly clear and light.

It was paired with a tomato based sweet sausage spaghetti concoction, which I suspect was far too spicy for the delicacy this wine seems to favor. I've reserved half the bottle for a second tasting.

I'm still pondering a rating, though at minimum at +1 on a scale of -1 to +3.

  • The '18 Montevertine is one of the prettiest wines made from Sangiovese I've tasted. On the nose and palate, I found a rather simple, at least for now, but very beautiful expression of red berry fruit and red floral tones. The fruit here is super sweet, while the texture of the wine is pure silk, medium to light in body with almost no perception of tannin. This was very easy to drink now given the beauty of the fruit and the textural finesse, immediately after popping the bottle without a decant, but if you enjoy a bit of tertiary complexity in the wine I could see this being best in 5-10 years.

  • Pleasant red cherry with a fine silhouette, transitioning from red to black cherry. There's a touch of warm earth and red spice suggesting the complexity that is likely to develop over the coming years. Certainly a Burgundian expression of Sangiovese. Shows well from the start, but better after 12 hours and better yet after 24. That said, the depth on the palate and length of the finish don’t suggest a profound future.

  • Like the Pian del Ciampolo drank along side these are coming along nicely. Though still a baby it does open up after five plus hours open. Sour cherry, leather, forest floor, pine, and dark chocolate. High acid and beat with food. Hold these at least five more years.

  • This delicious wine showed noted of ripe cherry, cherry cake, licorice, oregano, thyme and cassis. Great acidity and structure.
    Very captivating perfume.
Give this wine an hour decant if consumed now.
    Drink this: 2025-2030

  • This is just a classic expression of Sangiovese with wonderfully succulent and earthy dark cherry fruit and great freshness and verve. A fairly forward vintage but this wine is always alpine fresh with strong acidity and great mineral and floral lift.

  • [Restaurant purchase] We had dinner in a small place in the Appenine foothills, Mandri, Tuscany. A place where you expect mediocre Chianti Rufina on the list, but this list was, next to very good Chianti Rufina, populated with all the well known wines of Tuscany (Masseto, Ornellaia, Tignanello, Flaccionella, Le Pergole Torte etc). We opted for this Montevertine at a good price. Silky red fruit, floral (violet & roses), medium+ acidity, medium+ (but fine and already integrated) tannins, long finish.

Compared to Le Pergola Torte 2019 which I had a couple of days ago, this was more open and accessible and only slightly less complex. Given the difference in price I would probably opt for this vs LPT

  • This was excellent; red fruit and floral with mint and some forest floor notes; beautifully balanced and so elegant in feel yet with a great intensity. Delicious. I will need to pick up some more of this

  • Not too jammy or fruiting. Some cherries notes of dark chocolate

  • Cherries, soil, mineral on the nose and palate. High acidity and very moreish. Tannins are very ripe and round, with plenty of fruit to carry through to the long finish. An outstanding wine that can be enjoyed now with a 1-2 hour decant, or age for another 15-20 years with ease.

  • Unfortunately just not a fan of this producer’s style of wine. Was expecting a ‘wow’ moment, but got a ‘that’s it?’ instead.

  • Rating on potential. 2 hour decant. Still closed at first but then started to open. Purity, acidity and balance. Started short on finish but then lengthened nicely. This is excellent but I would vote in favour of giving it more time.

  • Ripe and juicy, and perhaps more elegant than the 2016 that I had yesterday. The red fruit is almost crunchy with some tart cranberry notes on the nose, but is far more sweet on the palate. Silky and soft tannins, this doesn't feel like it has the bulk for long-haul aging, though given how delicious this is now, that doesn't seem like a problem. Would be an easy buy but for Manetti's being a racist piece of shit.

  • Poured into a decanter about two hours before service; no formal notes. The 2018 Montevertine is a bit of a show-off with bright, flashy ripened cherries, porchini, red flowers, dusty earth and orange peel. Significant structure should allow for a hearty life. The finish is full of class. This has to be the aspiration of every Chianti Classico.

  • Agree with Dream below that this is a vintage to drink while holding 15, 16 and I’ll even put 17 in there. It’s young and acidic but the fruit is round and less tart than the those years. It’s also absent of the pine/resin notes these wines tend to have in their infancy. Essentially drank this as pop and pour but time open really helped it out.

  • Just a beautiful vintage for this great Chianti that's very approachable now. Very fresh and lifted with delicious flavors of dark cherry and forest floor along with notes of eucalyptus and red flowers. Very silky and fine with just a perfect mineral-crunch and spice-driven finish. I would drink this now while keeping the '15 & '16 in the cellar.

  • No decanting unfortunately, so this was quite tight throughout the whole night of drinking it. You can detect potential, but definitely too young right now. Another level compared to their entry wine.

  • Medium ruby color. Cool nose of ripe red cherry, mint and soft oak with afternotes of warm spice. Dry, rounded acidity, polished tannins, palate follows through with a slightly tart grippy finish. Medium body. Very good balance. Medium finish. Class act considering its youthfulness, but needs a long decant.

  • Pale purple, medium(+) rose, redcurrant, raspberry, red cherry, dill, liquorice, cinnamon, ripe fruit, wed stones, cloves, charred wood, coffee,Dry, high acidity, high alcohol, high smooth tannin, medium(+) body, long finish, very good wine, suitable for bottle ageing. After decanted more than 10 hours in the bottle, it becomes better and better, especially the floral aromas comes out.
