There's an odd damp earth note in the aromas and on the finish which is off-putting, but otherwise this is very impressive. The Madeira comparison is fair, there's a great deal of acidity, and plenty of intensity. Loads of red fruit, bracing, spicy and creamy. Very complex and moreish.
I do wonder if there's a hint of cork taint, but it hasn't gotten worse with air; I look forward to trying another bottle (probably from a different bottling) to see if the earthiness is a stylistic element or a flaw...

Fortified Evening with the TWS North London Group (Must & Lees, Warren Street): Brown-toned orange, dark amber perhaps. Nose remiscent of a school stationary cupboard, pencil eraser an amazingly accurate suggestion from Peter, and I also come up with those squeezy bottles of school paint. We have now reached this stage of the evening.... Almost like a Madeira on the palate, delicious and will go on forever probably.

2022 Port Harvest Tour; 9/22/2022-10/2/2022 (Porto, Portugal): Bottled in 2022. There are light caramel, vanilla, and wood notes on the nose. The very smooth flavor profile includes orange spice, toffee, and milk chocolate on the palate. Medium tannins combine with a long finish to make this a pleasing and balanced wine.

Lots of orangy caramel, with a touch of volatile acidity. Served at the Gertzes with dessert (poppy seed strudel). Delicious, not sure it's an $80 bottle.

Candied dried fruits, smoke and spices on nose and palate. Subtile tannins and an excellent medium+ acid which balances the wine and underholds and excellent, complex and long aftertaste. A great example of a 20 years old tawny.

Lovely flavors of candied orange, butterscotch, nuts and coffee. Impressive complexity. Some nail polish (VA) but it slowly dissipated with air. Has a slight touch of sweet cherry fruit. Fresh and light wine and the alcohol was very well integrated. Great wine! PS. This bottle was about 10 years old.

"Beautiful brown in color which comes from the time seen on oak. Caramel & nuts are the 2 distinctive flavors I am picking up.there is a slight fruitiness from it too like a dried apricot and the alcohol is present on the palate"

Golden rusty colour. Dried figs and oak with hints of sweet tobacco and orange peel on the nose. Taste of dried figs, raisins, sweet oak, orange peel and nuts. Long and complex finish with a great balanced taste. Goes well with cheese and cake.

24/3/18 Niepoort Tawny 20 Eyes closed you know you're gonna get some nuts & caramel! On the nose, orange, nuts, plenty of cedar, burnt caramel, decent volatile acidity with the undeniable nail polish, some glue Mouth is creamy, oxidative raisins/prunes, cinnamon spice , great acidity giving a nice backbone

Clean and bright, pale tawny colour and presence of legs. The nose is clean and fully developed, showing medium intensity simple aromas of dried fruit such as prunes, candied orange peel, almonds and glue. It's sweet with a medium acidity, high alcohol, medium- tannin, medium body and pronounced intensity flavours of prunes, candied orange peel, almonds and glue. Long finish. It's a very good quality wine with a lingering finish, a nice fruit concentration and a great balance between alcohol and sweetness, however it lacks complexity. Drink now, it will not improve in bottle since it's already fully developed.

Served blind. This smelled a bit older in character to most of the others with more oxidation being a bit medieval and thinner. Thinner in character on the palate than many others but bright. Spicy with lots of acidity. Some candy like flavors up front but not in an off putting way. Nice.

This was bottled in 2000, so in my quest to learn how various Ports do with bottle age I bought it. Lots of mahogany and maple on a thick nose. While on the palate there is the familiar spices, mahogany, carmel, cedar, and cinnamon, it seems to have lost that freshness that I love about this Port. The sweetness is now edging out that wonderfull overall balance that recently bottled ones have. While the freshness isn't as crisp, and honestly most people probably wouldn't notice it unless they've had plenty of experience with this Aged Tawny, it none-the-less hurts the overall experience of this particular bottle. That said, I am still impressed with how well this has held up over the prior 11 years. 91 Points

Mostly sweet raisins on the nose. Much more complex on the palate with flavours of raisins, white chocolate, dried citrus peel, and some fresh almonds and mild chili pepper on the finish. Typical Niepoort freshness. Wonderful balance: full flavoured but with a very light mouthfeel. Great port.

Wine Cellar Niepoort Tasting (Wine Cellar): Aged in the same 550 l oak casks for many years, the colour is a medium tawny colour with a deep orange tint. Fabulously intense on the nose, the aromas show butterscotch, candied satsuma, caramel, nuts, raisin, and dark chocolate. More plum than apricot on entry, the wine is powerful, complex and intense on the palate. Concentrated, there is a sweetness and a lively acid whilst the wine is layered and long. More upright than the 10-yr old this is seriously classy!

Pale tawny core with wide pale tawny rim. Pronounced and developed bouquet showwing caramel, toffee, vanilla and a whiff of walnut. Medium sweet palate, medium acidity, full bodied with pronounced flavours of caramel and vanilla with prune and walnut emerging on a very long finish. Lovely port, delicious slightly chilled as an aperitif.
