This was poured straight from the cask, so a cloudy appearance shouldn't be surprising. It has wonderful red fruit notes on the nose. On the palate, there are Sweet-tart notes, along with candied orange slices and light caramel. While the wine exudes a smooth and elegant character, I would have liked a bit more acidity to balance out the sweetness.

  • NV Butler Nephew and Co Porto Crusted 92 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

    (9/26/2022)

Very dark ruby in color. The grapes were harvested in 2014, the wine was bottled in 2015 and was released in 2018. This was a great conversation about crusted ports. I thought the crusted port had to be 3 consecutive vintages blended together but learned that a producer can declare 1-2 or three consecutive years if they want. This wine has crushed purple fruit on the palate. The complexity here falls into the Reserve Ruby range. This is a really pleasant wine.

  • NV Butler Nephew and Co Porto Very Old Tawny 95 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

    (9/26/2022)

Cask sample. We were told that this wine would be bottled in 2023, presumably under the Butler Nephew label. This Tawny Port is reportedly over 80 years old. Three full casks of this wine were discovered nine years ago from the Butler Nephew stocks. They chose not to bottle any because at the time it was too good for a 40 Year Old Tawny Port and older categories hadn't been approved yet. There will be 2,200 bottles. For the packaging, the top of the box will be a painting of street art divided up for each of the boxes. We tasted this sample from a large test tube. Dark brown-yellow in color. There are tons of espresso, chocolate, vanilla bean, and mahogany on the nose. Very complex flavor profile with great acidity, texture, and body. On the rich palate, there is finesse and power, with complex notes of caramel, orange spice, honey, nuts, vanilla, and a touch of butterscotch. The acidity seems to lengthen the rich finish. An amazing old Tawny.

Flight 11 - Adresen Lodge - Vila Nova de Gaia (12 Notes)

  • 2020 J.H. Andresen Porto Vintage 94 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

    (9/26/2022)

Dark impenetrable purple in color with garnet on the edge. Primary purple fruit with some light mint and herbal notes on the nose. On the palate, there is an initial burst of crushed boysenberry and blueberries followed almost immediately by massive grippy tannins. The late palate has some wonderfully structured tannins that slowly march on into the very long finish. This is showing a little drier than some of the other Anderson Vintage Ports I have had.

Dark purple in color but seems to have some light brown hues intermixed. There are floral and light herbal notes on the nose. The initial approach comes across as slightly elegant, but then the tannins come crashing through the mid-palate. Some smooth chocolate and blueberry notes on the palate, and a velvety texture on either side of the big tannins. Very long finish.

The entry is a cacophony of complex flavors - lime, Werther's candy, torrefacted sugars, maple and molasses. This wine is strikingly smooth on the palate. It is deep and rich, but everything seems to have integrated here perfectly. This is a 142 year old glass of perfection. It is so approachable and pleasurable in the mouth with richness, great balance, and incredible acidity.

    (9/29/2022)

The age of this White Port isn't known, but it has aged for several decades in the old warehouses of the Quinta. In 1972, the Great Grandfather zeroed out this wine with the IVP so they could only bottle it after getting special permission to bottle and label it as an Old Family White Port. With an amber-yellow hue, it offers delightful aromas of dried fruits and light tropical notes. The initial entry is intense, featuring lively acidity and some heat. On the palate, there are pleasant notes of maple and orange spice. This is a complex wine that is rich and wonderful to drink. However, it finishes slightly hot, which detracts a little from the overall quality. It is, however, still a solid, pleasant wine.

In 1972, the Great Grandfather zeroed out this wine with the IVP, so they could only bottle it after getting special permission to bottle and label it as an Old Family Tawny Port. With an amber-orange hue, it greets you with aromas of caramel, aged cedar wood, and hints of dusty red fruit. It exhibits a drier style with noticeable mid-palate tannins, and the palate shows pleasant notes of caramel, vanilla, and a touch of orange spices. It has an exceptional finish, which, along with the overall complexity makes this a very good wine.

2006 DR Colheita Port. Bottled in 2022. This wine is amber-ruby in color with orange on the edges. There are cinnamon and dried fruit notes on the nose. This wine was originally going to be bottled as a Late Bottled Vintage Port, but it went into barrel instead to become a Colheita Port. As such, it is a little bit of a strange Colheita, retaining some ruby Port characteristics not normally found in Colheita Tawny Ports. There are rich notes of roasted nuts and smooth caramel, but there are also some bright red fruits - strawberry, cranberry, and red currant.

This wine contains 80% Touriga Franca grapes. This wine is opaque, and inky purple in color. There are primary dark fruits with black plum, black currant, and cassis on the nose, along with an interesting breakfast waffle note. I wonder if this might be a by-product of the yeast. The entry is intense and the mouthfeel expands with concentrated blackberry and blue fruit. While the fruit is mouth-puckering, the tannins are in balance and make this drink like a gob-smacking glass of goodness. This is a big, massive wine with tremendous structure that will carry this wine a long way age-wise.
